"NO WAY" + "CALMING THE SNAKE"

This month's double-feature is our first look at Sonic Youth's final album. I chose this pair to start with for a simple reason: they were the first two songs from The Eternal premiered live.

Sonic Youth hit the stage in Philadelphia on August 29th, 2008 and launched right into two brand new songs. It was only their 17th show of a mere 20 total in 2008. They had a more relaxed touring year, following some pretty intense promotion for Rather Ripped and the Daydream Nation reissue in 2006 and 2007. They'd begun writing new material in July at their new Hoboken studio, Echo Canyon West. One of the earliest was "Mars", which was the second song of the set, after opener "No Way" (which Lee's notes date to just two days before this show!). "No Way" had pretty different lyrics and did not yet feature Lee on backing vocals, but the overall structure was close to its eventual Eternal recording. Likewise, "Mars" was more or less the same as it would appear on The Eternal, where it was retitled "Calming the Snake".

They opened with the same pair the next night in Brooklyn, and upgraded them to encore status for two Italian shows in October, their last live outings of the year. In Italy, "No Way" had different lyrics from its premiere but still not the final verses from the album. It was also still a Thurston solo venture - Lee had still not added his backing vocals, which enhance the pre-chorus and chorus. Throughout January they shared updates on the mixing of The Eternal via Twitter ("Calming the Snake" mixed January 16th, "No Way" mixed on the 27th, in case you were wondering), before initiating all of the things that come with the roll-out of a new album. One noteworthy difference was the band's presence on a new label, having left Geffen for Matador. Matador employed tricks like Buy Early Get Now, where fans who preordered the album would receive additional bonuses, like exclusive mp3s, a poster, a pre-release stream, and early access to ticket presales. Pre-order enthusiasts also received a live LP of one of the band's few 2008 shows, the July 4th centerpiece from Battery Park in New York City.

They returned to the stage on March 29th for their first appearance in Santiago, Chile, delivering a relentless set of hit after hit and oh, two new songs! "Calming the Snake" was still a charmer, as it would be at every single "proper" show in 2009. This time, "No Way" didn't make the cut, replaced by the premiere of "Sacred Trickster". "Sacred Trickster" would become the first official single from the album, dropping in April ahead of The Eternal's June release. Curiously, Matador's discography lists promo singles for both "Antenna" and "No Way" releasing on July 7th, 2009. The "Antenna" disc definitely exists (featuring a radial edit) but I'm not aware of physical copies of "No Way" ever turning up. Have you seen one?

Regardless, "No Way" got the single treatment when they played it on Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon, their sixth and final appearance on Late Night and first with Fallon as host. Thurston's choice of t-shirt prompted bandleader Questlove to tweet: "thurston moore is wearing the riskiest tshirt ive ever seen on broadcast tv….gangsta move son". "No Way" had two more shots on television, in a group environment - it was part of larger sets filmed for Canal+ in France (October 2009) and Austin City Limits (October 2010), and was included in both broadcasts. Here's the Canal+ performance:

 

 
"Calming the Snake" may not have had an outing on network or cable television, but it did get its chance to shine on Pitchfork.tv ...! They filmed a five-song set for the online magazine's streaming channel, delivering essential versions of four Eternal killers and one classic, "Schizophrenia". I watched this set dozens of times when it was initially released, they're on fire and the sound is fantastic. I believe it was recorded at SY's Echo Canyon West studio, just like the album, but the live sound is vicious. Turn it up and enjoy!

 

 
Both songs were played at every single concert in 2009 (aside from "No Way" getting sidelined in Santiago), typically within the first three songs. They would generally lead with a cluster of songs from The Eternal: "Sacred Trickster" "No Way" and "Calming the Snake". Usually "Trickster" or "No Way" would open, though "Tom Violence" got a handful of opportunities too. 2010 was a different story, mostly due to Mark Ibold's year-long commitment to Pavement, who were reuniting for the first time since 1999. He was integral to the structure of the Eternal material, so when faced with the prospect of playing as a quartet again, Sonic Youth chose to focus primarily on 80s and 90s material. However, for all performances where Mark Ibold was present, both "No Way" and "Calming the Snake" were played.

Not so in 2011. The band played only six proper shows with Mark, and while "Calming the Snake" was there til the bitter end, "No Way" was nowhere to be found, having been left behind in 2010 at their New Year's Eve show in London (a real bloodbath which also saw the final performances of "Brother James" "Kool Thing" "Anti-Orgasm" "Antenna" "Poison Arrow" and "Massage the History"). Kim touches on this in her Girl in a Band memoir, suggesting that Thurston specifically did not want to perform certain songs during the final stretch of South American shows. Indeed, none of his Eternal songs made the cut, and Kim's theory about their lyrical content seems reasonable. Look, I try to keep these things pretty light, but it's hard to discuss "No Way" without looking at its lyrics, and the story they tell. With all their talk of sweet temptation, the lies of succubi, and tricking love with sin - it reads like a denial of romantic advances. The early lyrics from the October 2008 Italian gigs paint a less polished picture, making for a potentially interesting lyrical analysis. Not by me - I can barely form a sentence - but there's something to explore there.

Live versions of both songs appear on the band's official release of their October 21st, 2009 Berlin show. As always, they were at the start of the set, including an extended intro for opener "No Way". An even odder version of "No Way" was included on a compilation called Does Your Cat Know My Dog?. It was recorded on May 31st, 2009 at the Kilbi Festival in Dudingen, Switzerland. It's a fairly standard version until the third verse, at which point the power suddenly goes out, killing all three guitars, leaving only bass, drums, and vocals. This holds up for the verse, but the pre-chorus bit ("werewolf commando...") is where Mark drops out, with Steve quickly following. At this point, Lee joins in to sing his part, and Steve hops back on the beat, and its finishes with drums and two voices. At the end of the songs, Lee cracks "I sure smelled something burning up here for about a minute there before that all went out." Thurston is more direct: "The shit blew up!" This version was later collected on the band's bandcamp release Rarities 1. As previously noted, you won't find "No Way" on the Brooklyn 2011 show, but you will find "Calming the Snake".

As with all of The Eternal, Mark Ibold plays bass for both songs. Each guitarist uses only a couple of different tunings on the album, but for both of these songs they each use the same - in fact Thurston and Kim are even using the same tuning! It's one that he had previously used on his Trees Outside The Academy LP (DDAF#AD). There it made for haunting acoustic drones, here it is used to great effect all across the album, with its giant crushing distorted open D chord and super heavy doubled low D strings. Kim and Thurston both use metal files against their strings for the rising noise segment in "Calming the Snake". Lee uses a complementary tuning that actually dates back to 1987 and the Sister material, the long abandoned (except for all those performances of "Schizophrenia") DDDDAA triplet, which he used for 8 of the album's 12 songs. Both Thurston and Lee had begun playing their custom Fender Jazzmaster models, each using it for their Eternal D tuning. Kim rotated her tunings (she used twice as many as Thurston or Lee!) between a few guitars, including a J Mascis Jazzmaster and a kinda-Jaguar built for her by supertech Eric Baecht.

Check out Lee's notes! In particular you can see how "Mars" evolved, and how he notates the different sections. Like that song, "No Way" had a working title which pointed to its influence: "Wipers-esque". Both songs are well executed, tightly crafted, high energy rock-outs that (along with "Sacred Trickster") made for an explosive opening to all Eternal gigs. I definitely want to look at more songs from The Eternal - I have at least one more planned for this set - but there are pretty extensive tabs already posted. I shared my own tabs back in 2009, with updates in 2010, and have now gone over them again making slight improvements and, of course, colour coding.
