NOTES:
- The first song performed at Sonic Youth's third known
public appearance, the 1981 Noisefest event organized by Thurston.
This is the oldest recording of Sonic Youth that I'm aware of. I suspect that the songs performed during their Noisefest set were leftovers from the Arcadians (aka Red Milk, aka Male Bonding), the pre-SY band featuring Thurston, Kim, Ann DeMarinis, and Dave Keay. They probably taught these songs to Edson when he initially joined, and began working on SY material once Ann left and Lee entered the pictured.
- This song begins with some crashing
guitar/keys/percussion skronk, with odd, virtually incomprehensible vocals by Thurston flavoured with quirky exclamations by either Kim or Ann. Eventually it becomes very reminiscent of "Burning Spear", particularly
in Edson's drumming and the rhythm of Kim's bassline
(the notes themselves sound more like "Sugar Kane"..). Ann
starts a keyboard solo (!), then Thurston
comes back in playing off the synth line w/ some arpeggiated
guitar riffs. The keys/gtr drop out towards the end
and the bass/drums play out to the finish.
