NOTES:

  • Dave Markey gets a co-writing credit for this song (probably lyrical). Thurston wrote it on an acoustic guitar on Dave's couch, after a visit to the SST Superstore.
  • Lyrical references to the SST Superstore on Sunset Strip (SST were SY's former label). "I'll go there - Sister's there" refers to SY's Sister LP. "Husker Du" are another SST band. Pat Smear, former Germs/Nirvana/Foo Fighters guitarist happened to be working there at the time.
  • Thurston recorded 2 tracks of vocals for this song. Towards the end, you can hear him say "Shit is fucked up".
  • No known Sonic Youth performances of this song exist, but Thurston played this song solo while opening for Free Kitten and Mosquito on a brief Japan tour in early 1993. He played it again on 8/10/93.
  • An unreleased alternate vocal take features an improvised rap courtesy of Thurston where he jokingly accuses SST of "sucking on the big D", according to Confusion is Next.
  • Early rough mixes of Jet Set songs surfaced on the internet in 2003. An early mix of "Skull" as well as the fabled 'Rap Damage' version are included. The non-rap version still features additional Thurston rap damage during the intro of the song: "SST - at the fuckin' superstore - better roll this biatch - y'all ready to go down to SST superstore? -- that's right motherfuckers! yo! fuckin' click it!". The rough mix features the same vocal take as on the album. See below for details on the 'Rap Damage' version.
ALTERNATE VERSIONS:

  • "Rap Damage" version from unreleased Jet Set demos - ALT VERSION - 3:58

Thurston's 'rap' version, recorded as a joke during the Jet Set sessions.
