In Sonic Life, Thurston says they played CBGB the night Jack Henry Abbott was convicted, which was January 21st. However, a piece found by Chris Hartstonge suggests that they actually played two dates on the 22nd and 23rd.

This was the first of forty-eight dates supporting Neil Young & Crazy Horse on their Smell the Horse tour. They were still supporting Goo.
They opened with 7 minutes of chime tapes and guitar noise before Kim revealed that her amp blew up. "Tom Violence" was followed by another delay, with Thurston addressing the crowd for a bit.

This was the first of twenty-four known dates on the Youth Against Fascism Pacific Rim tour in support of Dirty.
Their previous gig in Melbourne was also January 22nd!
It sounds like something may have gone wrong with Thurston's GABDEG guitar after "Sugar Kane", and they could have swapped "Genetic" for "Eric's Trip" on the spot.
