"
There is 3000 times more natural gas coming out of the leak than oil. The damage of the massive amounts of Gas being released into the gulf is worse than the oil.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gIX

Oxygen levels in some areas have dropped 30 percent, and should continue to drop, Joye said. "It could take years, possibly decades, for the system to recover from an infusion of this quantity of oil and gas," Joye said. "We've never seen anything like this before. It's impossible to fathom the impact."+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

And the toxics are still pouring into the ocean. Don't believe anything they say about this disaster. The CEO of BP needs to hang for this.

some people are saying this could change the viscosity of the ocean and trigger a new Ice Age.

I'm thinking that all that oil on the surface will change evaporation rates and drastically change weather patterns.

Who knows what those thousands of gallons of chemicals BP is spraying will do in the long run.

Oh well, the media will find another celebrity sex scandal to discuss.

OTOH, if the US doesn't have off shore oil, other countries will and they won't even have the >lame< environmental laws that we do.

Eh? If other countries can have off shore oil then they will whether or not the US does. The US having or not having off shore oil is completely irrelevant. How do you know other countries won't/do not have the same laws? You do know that other countries do drill for oil at sea right? The UK does it, you know that right? Surely if America does it less then that is a good thing?

This is one of the most devestating (sp?) events i've ever heard. I could feel my heart drop in my chest... I want to volunteer, but I don't even know what I could do.

It's heart breaking to think of how much this has fucked up eco systems and so many Americans are like, "meh. oh well." They don't even care. I haven't heard ONE of my friends bring this up to me. ONE. And I'm an environmental nut!!

Poor Louisianna just can't get a break.

Kevin Costner was just here and on the local news (New Orleans) promoting a new invention, supposedly his, that will help break up the oil in a more environmentally friendly way. It was some red liquid, lot's of tubes and hoses, etc.... had the TV volume down, but it looked groovy.

I think it's naturally, humanistically vain to assume that we, as humans are in control of the earths well being. Certainly, we should act with haste, cap the leak and contain what can be contained.... but aside from that... this is nothing more than a self righteous spludge fest for many people of dwindling importance. People that are always on a crusade that humans control the fate of the world and feel needed and important to overreact to occasions like this.

I'm in Louisiana and can contest.... the spill might effect some local fishermen (short term) for example, but they are being heavily compensated by BP. Aside from that, the Earth will take care of itself, it always had. It's so fucking retarded, as humans to assume such importance that we are responsible for the earth's well being. The Earth can and will take care of itsself, it always had and always will. Our own errors may temporarily inconvenience our lifestyles but the earth will go on, and amend itself. I don't know if you all hear it all, but a lot of the stuff they are talking about doing in response down here it's absolutely absurd, if not out right retarded.

... you've got to admit, that humans get to the point of self righteous that they feel that their every actions impact the world... like earth is at the mercy of their doings. the Earth was around long before them and will be long after them.... yes, we can change the landscapes little chips at a time, but the planet will evolve and erode our imprints as it's shown to do... sometimes even noticiable within a lifetime. Fuck it, we are such insignificant fucks on such a massive lifeform (Earth) that only humans, with their vanity, assume we control it's fate..... lame.

There are no words, Fresh Chops.

We are the first species in the earths billion upon billion years of existence that have the brain capacity to utilize resources in such a destructive manner. Also, the first species that found ways (food aide, massive irrigation, depletion from aquifers, mining, ect. ect. ECT.) to over populate, consume, and destroy the space that mother nature so graciously put aside for us.

For you to tell me that this massive oil leak is going to have an affect on "SOME LOCAL FISHERMAN", just proves to me how brainless and idiotic you are.

Keep your small mindedness to yourself please. The rest of us that have the ability to comprehend how FUCKED UP this is would like to mourn the dead zone the size of pennsylvania that is only growing each day.

please explain this "dead zone" (man made term), and explain how the world can't recover from the oil spill..... also, care to explain how this will impact in relation to past natural and man made disasters of similar size?... oh yeah, we've moved on, evolved from, and forgotten all about them. Shit happens.... and people are talking about "fuck BP", but where the fuck will we be without fuel? The same people protesting in fad about BP etc. would be the first bitches to loose their shit if the lights cut off, or they were walking everywhere they had to go.

Here's the thing... over-thinking things, and you sitting on your computer typing all the detrimental effects that oil in the ocean can have doesn't mean the more disconcerned person is "small-minded"... you summarize my point. I'd LOVE the opportunity to fast forward to 10 years from now and ask you what you think about the BP Gulf pipe accident..... you'd be at at loss, that is assuming you even remember what the fuck we'd be talking about..... YET, here you are... and I'm small minded because I'm not hopping all around (digitally) as yourself.

Do me a favor and assume you know shit about the actual and current effects of the spill.... I guess I could understand if I was on the other side of the country or in another country hearing inflated news stories... but I implore you, search hard.... educate me on the ACTUAL effects that the uncontained oil is having. The biggest threat is the Louisiana coast right? Search hard for footage..... you will find an occasional slew of helicopters swarming one lump of marsh with a small streak of crude.... and they all swarm towards it because the reality is.... there is not much there.... and not as much as would be theorized and dramatized. The state, the government, the news.... everybody is vastly overdramatizing this event and frankly, you're just a bitch to their drama. Everybody stands to gain from this except BP..... and everyone benefits from exploiting it and over exaggerating it.... a chance to point a big stink finger (per'se')... [pause to remind you that yes, you are a bleeding heart, ill-informed bitch to this, bitch.... because you sound off on an internet forum and get up in a ruckus, doesn't make you that much more intelligent and doesn't mean you won't be right were you're at doing the same thing 5-10 years from now with this temporary disaster out of your mind.

The state of Louisiana is now trying to have BP pay for an absolutely absurd man made, dredged up barrier that spans the whole coast line costing billions and billions because of potential "oil". Oh, BTW, the state has been trying to get this done for decades although constantly denied as invaild by the government. Can you see any scandalism and exploiting going on there (or are those thoughts reserved for small minded)?

Everyone is doing everything right to contain the oil, mutha'fucking relax! BP is paying out the mutha'fucking nostrils to make everything right, from containment crews, to drill capping, to compensation to effected industries and even heard tonight that BP is giving Louisiana like 17 million just to spend towards tourism improvements.

you can fuck off with all your bleeding heart self righteousness....

Let me ask you.... how do you see this playing out... since you've taken the position as an eager but reluctantly uninvolved drama queen..... how do you see this playing out? Give me your worst case scenario, both long term and short term... let me jump the gun and tell you mine: I see them capping the leak, continuing for an "X" amount of time to work the surface to round up the crude (both at the coast and at sea)... making many people wealthy on highly gouged contract jobs and aside from that... well, life going back to normal leaving you with little to act frantic about until the next inevitable disaster. So, I ask you, paint me your grim picture with your superior intellect.

And to those making comments about the oil changing the oceans surface and triggering and ice-age etc.... seriously? What is the ratio of the crude oil to water in the ocean, in the area? I think really, maybe by the media's own fault, that y'all see a sci-fi'esque vision of this disaster. Search for footage, film and pics... they have a hard time even spotting rogue oil on the surface... forget it taking over the surface, they can hardly even spot well polluted areas to make for good news pictures... especially in areas aside from where barriers have created little accumulations.

Last, let me ask you... (cause I have been called out).... none of y'all are stupid enough to deny the fact that the news and media and even government routinely over exaggerate, no, "feed" off of instances like this for either manipulative gain if not even just simply for ratings right? I don't know what kind of media this thing get's outside of the state, but I can't help but think it's grossly over exaggerated... so, if I come across as small minded because I'm not a bitch to the media, I feel sorry for you. When this thread is searched in a year from now and all the little drama and ruckus all have displayed is long forgotten and for from concern, where will you be? If you can't see yourself as falling for routine media hype and drama, maybe I'm not the "small-minded" one

yeah but when we weren't around yet, nothing was drilling through the bottom of the sea to reach the oil that would stay there, normally.
