I love 'A Thousand Leaves'. This album served as my intro to Sonic Youth. Hearing 'Sunday' on BBC Radio 1 blew my mind. I bought the single and then rented the album on cassette from my local library and fell deep into the rabbit hole and never looked back.

Haha, Thurston would love the fact you rented it on cassette!! I didn't even know that was still possible in 1998!

Anyway, I gave this album a full run through for the first time in ages last night and was blown away by how great it really is! I remember when it came out I thought it was quite good but not great as I had it in my head that Washing Machine was basically unsurpassable. Now I'd rate them side by side. ATL seems to have been a really slow burner for a lot of people but is now starting to be viewed as somewhat of a 90s Daydream Nation... and deservedly so!

I've mentioned this a thousand leaves ER I MEAN times, but no matter - never ever forget that that killer riff comes from Helium's "Skeleton" and Mary Timony should have been credited.

I loved loaning cassettes from the library, liked the romance of thinking who else had borrowed them before and where their musical tastes went.

Funny enough from there I got Dirty and Washing Machine on CD for my birthday and Washing Machine became my favourite album.

I appreciate the lullaby effect of some of the songs on this album. My daughter fell asleep to "Snare, Girl" a lot.

The most experimental SY record they released in the 90's is a mixed bag. Contre Le Sexisme gets the album off to a sublime start with all the hallmarks of classic SY 80's dissonance and melody. In what sounds like a love letter to the perennial EVOL this track has distant reverb drenched drum patterns paired with hypnotic grooves to one of Kim Gordons' best vocal takes. People tend to overemphasise the importance of the lyrics here as if it is not SY they are listening to, holding this up to lyrical gold standards and to suggest SY place high importance in trivial matters as words. In turn missing the point of Kim's rare emotive tone and delivery.

The band then remember they are signed to a major and turn out the obligatory Thurston indie number born of a taxed riff. Meh. Female mechanic then brings things back to almost previous standard with Kim once again in fine form. Then we have Thurston's pseudo hippy epic Wildflower Soul which tries too hard to whisk you away on an emotional journey but has all the impact of an art-fart in the wind; None of the melodies here evoke any iota of feeling and with each passing segment tries harder and harder to squeeze out some kind of euphoria which ends up sounding forced. The goal of this track was bettered and accomplished some years later with Rain on Tin.

This brings us on to the running joke of this album: Thurston. His vocals are whimsical and tired alluding to the child he is clearly lamenting his lullaby's. Juxtaposed with Kim's reinvigorated and aggressive stance - Ineffable me and French Tickler - the likes of which had not been heard since Orange rolls Angels spit and you have a cliched loud and quiet dynamic theme. And that's the problem with A Thousand Leaves: T-bag's approach is anaemic and lacks heart. And no amount of attempting a shimmering vocal falsetto on Wildflower Soul to cringe worthy degree will change that fact.

Lee pops in for the ludicrous Hoarfrost and the Karen Koltrane avant, noise bop: who's purpose is again failed and then accomplished on Murray Streets' Karen Revisited.

In conclusion: A Kim album. A swansong of sorts for her aggressive vocal take which would sadly never be heard again, and an album devoid of male character. A win for feminism.

Ludicrous as in: out of place as to be amusing; ridiculous.

...as in... marvelous. KK is shyte however - All avant noise with no sugar sprinkles. Still, a masterpiece in comparison to Hits of Sunshine; a true steaming pile of audio torture.

ATL is honestly one of my favorites. I feel like it has all the SY elements in it. The album has some great variety in it too. Yer Alt Rock licks to some real experimental out there shit. I'm in to it.

Kk; it comitts the cardinal sin of being insufferably boring. The one note guitar rhythm through most of its duration, the attempt at a catchy outro which of all ungodly places sounds taxed straight from Wildflower Soul. Ranaldo's vocal take is utterly half-arsed and sounds nearly as bored as I am. The cherry on top of this audio toxic molehill is the subject matter, the Carpenters. By mere association the song is relegated to the confines of the recesses of my mind. This band is for boring auld farts, which fittingly matches the song.

With A Thousand Leaves, I thoroughly enjoy every song featuring Thurston on vocals, which usually isn't the case. Wildflower Soul's euphoric for me. I also agree with those calling Karen Koltrane a masterpiece. Lee's two are stunners. It's wild how you feel so differently, Diesel. But I respect it.
