From what I can tell, cassette releases are near a record high. However, discussions on this board are near dead......that wasn’t the case 10+ years ago.

Soooo, who is still buying and listening to cassettes? I purchased more cassettes last year than anything else. Please use this thread to discuss new cassette releases, purchases or old cassettes you’re currently listening to.

One of my end of year purchases:

Arrington de Dionyso & Ted Byrnes - The Ballot Or The Bullet.
This release is a continuation of Arrington’s series, “This Saxaphone Kills Facist.”

I liked Arrington back when he was playing in Old Time Relijun, but not a lot since. Cassette wise, I always look for them since I own a 1994 truck with a deck. Last one I got was thisn':

Just this past week I recal reading something about the track, Your Ghost Is Dead......doubt there are too many rolling around blasting these beautifully brutal sounds from a cassette! Sadly, our vehicles have been cassette-less for the past four years.

It was former SYG member Dead-Air who introduced me to Arrington and Old Tim Relijun. Ricardo had Arrington in studio (December 2016) and discussed his artwork and different musical output: What’s This Called?......two great OTR tracks start the show. I’m more a fan of his OTR days, but I have been enjoying the randomness of his saxophone blast.

What other cassettes do you play in your truck?

I still buy cassette tapes very regularly, and love the format even with their obvious flaws.

Sometimes I would buy cassette tape as opossed to CD or even vinyl in a few cases (Thurston Moore & Adam Golebiewski's "Disarm", for instance) to save on shipping expenses (it seems sending stuff to Mexico is pretty pricey no matter whereabouts in the world you'd be mailing from).

My most recent tape purchase is Shayna Dunkelman's "Divergence", which consists of two pieces of analog percussion and synth-generated sounds inspired on two great classical composers (Paganini, and Händel).

Yousuke Fuyama was in Mexico a month or so ago, and I got "Raw +++ 2017", an intense tape of glitch and dark ambient.

If I could recommend some of my favorite labels from Mexico for anyone to check out, Sploosh Records (well, Sploosh actually operates from Los Angeles more often than not, and has operated from Perú recently as well), and Campo Abierto would be right at the top. The latter focuses on the noise/experimental scene from all over Mexico, and their limited edition cassette tapes are pretty beautiful way beyond the music contained therein: I adore the most their latest offering, which goes to the point of including fragments of human bones. Dorados Pantanos is ace too documenting some exciting noise acts, and I hope Julian Bonequi's Audition Records will be releasing physical artifacts very soon.

Speaking of artists I would go broke for (wheter they release in CD, vinyl, tape or any other format imaginable), Okkyung Lee (I spent ridiculous money on discogs on a copy of Okkyung Lee & Bill Orcutt's "OKK/OTT" tape), Conrad Sound, and Lasse Marhaug (did you notice how busy he has been releasing tons and tons of awesome stuff -including tapes- during the last year?), all rock my soul.

I just listened to my copy of Las Sucias' "Salte del Medio" on my very old (but still working like a charm) Sony Sports walkman plus Marshall Monitor headphones, all the while writing this (shit)post.

I have plenty cassettes from back in the day before CD came. have not been buying them last 10 years. very rarely. only some rare Thurston related releases. it might be because I do not have any proper tape player, except one completely bang up walkman, which remind me I need to buy a proper hi-fi system with proper tape deck while they are still available. love cassettes as a medium.

Even though I came up at the height of the cassette era, I have very little Nostalgia or love for the format. However, it's looking more and more like I'm going to have to put a tape deck back in my stereo system because so many groups doing the kind of music that I like seem to be putting their stuff out exclusively on cassette. I do think they're more durable than CDRs at least. And they take somewhat more commitment to make. I also have to admit that I'm considering putting out my own stuff on cassette in addition to LP so that I will have something cheaper to offer people on a budget or people who simply prefer the medium.

I lost both of my Thunderbolt Pagoda LP’s in the flood, so the opportunity to one day have them on cassette is welcomed news! In the meantime: Second Ascension

......believe the Savage Clone mixtape I’ve had for close to ten years survived the flood.

i don't buy tapes unless it's the only format for the release, which is often these days. the kids do not buy cds which is annoying because most of my albums sound better on that format. but the tapes sell, so w/e. i guess it's the obsolete format "cool factor".

i'm down to just a tape player in my car. i was immediately reminded of why they suck. if you want to hear a specific song, forget about it. minutes of silence while you rewind. that hiss. people like it. it makes me go deaf. dolby is shit. it cuts off the high end way too much. dubbing is a chore. i often get the volume balance wrong. clipping from too loud or too much hiss from too quiet. sometimes left and right channels are off balance.

bring back more dead formats! 8 tracks! reel to reels! minidiscs!

I like the durability and cheapness and of cassettes, and I like being able to rerecord over them. And they also take up less space in my tiny flat. I never stopped using them and am glad they have been making a come back. Records are too expensive nowadays and are I find the new wave of vinyl fetishism by people who never bought a record before 2013 to be pretty irksome.
Bloodspattered vinyl! 468GSM! Heavy weight letter pressed card sleeve! Screen printed by hand! Mastered by that Rashad Becker guy in Berlin! Exclusive Collectors Edition Game of Thrones Soundtrack LP!

I've never found cassettes to be really long lived. Most of mine go bad after a while, but I have a home deck and sometimes record my own off of good stock. I ran into a pretty good stack of unused Maxell 90 and 120 at a church sale for 25 cents each, so I gotta do that soon. It's a bit of a pain, but the good quality blanks usually last a lot longer than the commercial releases. Almost all of the experimental artists I get to see do cassettes..

Funny how that goes. I still have tapes from the 90s that play fine, and even a couple that i think are from the 70s. On the other hand I've never had a pair of headphones last longer than a few months.

All my old cassettes are quietly gathering dust.

I used to like them though, because they were a cheap way of trying out different bands. I know there's the internet, but there's something about holding a solid copy of something, you know?

I dislike the format fetishisation that goes on, I've got a collection but im not gonna "collect" just for the sake of it. Vinyl is far too expensive at the moment, I got Electric Trim on Vinyl but really i wish we could go to CDrs with the artwork being the thing that induces you to buy the physical copy

Mid-Valley Mutations just had its 100th Episode and celebrated with a cassette only show......with exception for, The Elvis Tapes that weave in and out throughout the show.

I’ve purchased ten or so new cassette releases over the past few weeks, I’ll share them over the coming days.
