The big three post-punk bands?
Public Image, The Cure and Gang of Four?
Wire, Echo & The Bunnymen, and Talking Heads?
The Birthday Party, The Slits & Devo?
U2, Bauhaus & The Fall?
Einsturzende Neubauten, The Pop Group and Scritti Politti?

Anyway, are Sonic Youth even a band that gets ripped off these days? I mean sure in the 90s, but now? I haven't a clue, and I can't remember the last time I heard about a new band that got compared to Sonic Youth.

I think Killing Joke is much more boring than for example JD, Siouxsie or Cure. But I still like it a little. Which is more influental, Killing Joke or SY, hard to say. Killing Joke has been just one of goth etc. bands, SY took lots of influences from Velvet, 13th Elevators, Stooges etc.

To me biggest three post punk bands are Birthday Party, JD & the Cure.
