Record Store Day 2011
I heard that SONIC YOUTH's contribution to this years record store day will be a reissue of Whore's Moaning: OZ '93 Tour Edition. I don't know any details beyond that unfortunately...
|
Why would they do that? They released all of those tracks on Dirty Deluxe.
|
And they sold some leftover originals on the kung fu store site a little while ago.
|
Ozzy is the "spokesperson" for record store day - do you think they've jumped the shark? Does record store day really need a celebrity face? why does everything in our culture need to be mediated by 'celebrities'?
|
Especially someone who is a complete irrelevant twat.

might buy that syd barrett comp. too if it isn't too expensive. |

because it's a cool EP. |
Record Store Day is pretty underwhelming as every year goes by... i'm a vinyl junkie but i find it rather unnecessary to even pickup any of these releases and even this Whore's Moaning reissue, i'd rather go to my local flea market and see i can find something older that is interesting that i don't already own or haven't heard yet.
|
Like I've discussed on this board before, I'd love to see a box set of Sonic Youth 12-inchers, including those singles and EPs that were only available on 7- or 10-inch. Now that would be a welcomed Record Store Day surprise from SY, considering how difficult it's becoming to find some of those old singles in decent shape (or at all).
Think about it: Hallowe'en (original mixes, with all the tracks from the various versions) Hallowe'en II Starpower Kool Thing Disappearer Dirty Boots (unless they decided to blow it up to full length and release it as an official live album) 100% Youth Against Fascism Sugar Kane Drunken Butterfly (Why not?) Bull In The Heather Diamond Sea Little Trouble Girl Sunday Nevermind Kali Yug Express They could release such vinyl in two volumes, with the records in their original covers. (I've probably forgotten a couple of things also worthy of inclusion.) |

Nels Cline on Record Store Day
I worked at Rhino Records in West L.A. from around 1976 to 1985. This was the time when little record stores such as (in the Los Angeles area) Rhino, Aron's, Poo Bah, Rene's, et al thrived by selling used records, cutouts, and BOOTLEGS. Other record store...s like Jem Records specialized in imports, and we would make pilgrimages to The Valley to buy the latest ECM records, weird prog rock records, and cutting edge/obscuro improv on Incus and FMP, etc. Like free-form radio programming, my heart always "zings" a bit when I experience a barely socialized underground record store somewhere. I recognize the atmosphere of wariness, the alienation mixed with inspiration, the passion for sound and culture, the desire to permeate one's life wholly with the certain singular stench of whatever one is obsessed with that week. Whether it's Rhino (long gone), Poo Bah (still sort of there in a different location), Atomic, or late lamented stores elsewhere like Hoboken's Rather Ripped, or newer (monster) stores like Amoeba, Waterloo (in Austin), Twist & Shout (Denver), or the numerous little hole-in-the-wall stores I stroll into across the globe whose names I have forgotten, I salute you all. - Nels Cline |
Can't wait! I did buy (as much) pot trying to save for Sy, Nirvana, and hopefully PJ.
|
Only 6,000 copies of Whores Moaning will be available worldwide of this EP re-issue originally released in 1993 in Australia to coincide with tour dates there. With the title referencing the earlier EP by friends/labelmates Nirvana, Whores Moaning includes the radio edit of “Sugar Kane,” covers of the New York Dolls’ “Personality Crisis” and Alice Cooper’s “Is It My Body,” and the instrumentals “The End Of The End Of The Ugly” and “Tamra.” The front cover artwork is a photocopy of one of Kurt Cobain’s dolls; the back cover is an original drawing by Cobain. And more importantly another release (think visually) will be announced by Sonic Youth on record store day.
|
Store near me has three copies of Whore's Moaning for 20 euros a pop - if you want me to pick one up, send me an email.
|
mine had about 8 of them. quite a lot. dunno how many are left now...
|
I didn't pick it up but the mix on Personality Crisis is worth the price of admission.
esp the 'solo' |
i love record store day.....and i hate record store day ....all at the same dang time
|

Quote:
Was psyched to see blue when i opened it just now! There's a Nivana 20th Nevermind sticker with an ad for the year that punk broke dvd coming in the fall on the back. wierd, its a nirvana sticker? Got other stuff today, but was bummed I got dogged on the Nirvana one |
just picked up whore's moaning. couldn't find Hoarmoaning.
|
(not RSD related but I bought it today)Oh but I picked up a new case($4) for my who live at leeds. It's actually really neat cause it's like a folder and has like documents of the show. I can't find pics, but I might take my own.
also got darkside of the moon($5). Actually it's an original and very well maintained also had the original sticker that came with the vinyl. |
Skipped Hoarmoaning... bought Whore's Moaning.
Last year tons of "rarities" were still kicking around - but I feel like vinyl flipping has a higher profile this year, so I think there's going to be more people taking advantage of this (sadly). Missed out on the White Stripes 7" re-issues, and would have loved the UK specials (Joy Division Split and The Wake 3x7"). Underwhelming is probably right, but there was a 5LP Flaming Lips re-issue box, so that's something... |
I got the pink mist comp - beat that with a dildo!
|
Quote:
Maybe there's a Sonic-Youth sticker with a The Year Punk Broke ad in the Hormoaning re-issues . . .? |

See the debacle here: http://www.facebook.com/RecordStoreDay#!/RecordStoreDay/posts/10150543117160276 |
$31? fuck that.
|
i got:
Sonic Youth - Whore's Moaning EP Josh T. Pearson - Sweetheart I Ain't Your Christ' and 'Country Dumb' (Piano versions) 12" Grinderman - Evil EP Various Artists - Kill Rock Stars Moon Duo - Scars 7" I did see the Nirvana EP, but someone took it just before me. |
I got the original Whore's Moaning EP somewhere
|
Picked up Whore's Moaning for fellow boardie Stu, didn't get it myself because I already have the Dirty reissue vinyl.
Pondered the Earth vinyl but 35 euros was a bit too much at the moment. Shit was heavy (both literally and figuratively)! And another fellow boardie scored the Polvo's Celebrate The New Dark Age and the Built To Spill 7" for me. Thanks Skip! From reports over at the EA board and elsewhere, record flipping scumbags were out in droves this year (at least in the US, anyway). |
Only thing I bought was this. 180 gram double white vinyl. Edition of 3,000.
![]() |
I got there late and missed out on quite a lot of stuff including Whore's Moaning.
I only got the Built to Spill and Vivian Girls 7". Then I went to some used record store in a market and found Flower/Halloween for £9 and 4 Tunna Brix for £13. I'm pretty happy with those purchases. |

A most fabulous price! :) |
Patiently waiting for the White Hills "Black Valleys" CD that Aquarius issued especially for RSD to row its way across the Atlantic in a leaky kayak...
|
I think RSD kinda proves that many record collectors are mini-capitalists.
Sadly. |
I heard there was supposed to be a Maritime/Promise Ring split 7" coming out on Record Store Day. I guess that never happened.
