THE WORLD LOOKS RED tab by chris lawrence Lee tuning: EADECD w/ screwdriver @ 9th fret Thurston tuning: ? (thurston's original tuning isn't known but he tends to favor F#F#F#F#EB for live versions) Thurston opens by banging the open strings. Kim's bass comes in, followed by the drums. Lee's guitar is loudest left. He's strumming the strings behind the screwdriver (so on the 'wrong' side) and muting their sustain with his hand. During this part, Thurston is occasionally striking his strings 4 times, with a drumstick over the pickups. Then Lee hits the top 4 strings (DECD) on the proper side of the screwdriver, but first pushes them down a bit on the other side of it, then releases like a reverse bend. Thurston just bangs the open strings during this part. For the verse, Thurston doesn't play guitar. Lee begins by strumming behind the screwdriver again, then arpeggiating the strings, then back to strumming again (all behind the screwdriver). After the verse, Thurston's guitar comes back in, with the drumstick over the pickups, playing in the right speaker. It's all pretty random picking. Lee starts playing something like this, while pushing the strings up and down behind the screwdriver: D--0-----0------0-----0-------0----0------ C----0------0-----0------0------0-----0--- E------0------0-----0------0------0-----0- ETC D----------------------------------------- A----------------------------------------- E----------------------------------------- eventually he moves up to another chord. i can't find the exact chord, but something like this works (keep in mind that 0 is the 9th fret, with the screwdriver behind it, but the other numbers are the actual frets): D--17-17-17-17-17-17-17-17-17- C--16-16-16-16-16-16-16-16-16- E--15-15-15-15-15-15-15-15-15- D---0--0--0--0--0--0--0--0--0- A---0--0--0--0--0--0--0--0--0- E---0--0--0--0--0--0--0--0--0- then back to open DECD w/ behind-screwdriver bend while thurston hits open strings. verse same as before. after the 2nd verse, Thurston hits the lowest string and starts chugging away at it, while Lee's banging open strings, then goes back to the same as the first interlude. the end has Lee banging away at the last chord tabbed up there, and Thurston running a drumstick up and down his fretboard. ------------------------------------------------ THE SONIC YOUTH GUITAR/BASS TABLATURE ARCHIVE: http://www.islandnet.com/~mustang/tab/index.html ------------------------------------------------
