NOTES FOR BURNING SPEAR - THURSTON AND LEE (EADGBE)

Sonic Youth have alleged in the past that the entire first EP was recorded in standard tuning. However, for most of the songs, tuning isn't really of specific importance. For Burning Spear, Thurston has been using F#F#F#F#EB lately, and Lee has been using whatever guitar he happens to be playing at the time (F#F#GGAA seems popular). For his part, Thurston wedges a drumstick under the 12th fret and beats it w/ a second stick. Lee apparently uses an electric drill thru a wah pedal on the original song.. live he seems to just attack his guitar with drumsticks..

NOTES FOR I DREAMED I DREAM - THURSTON AND LEE (EADGBE)

Tuning confirmed by various statements by the band that the first EP was all in standard.

NOTES FOR SHE IS NOT ALONE - THURSTON AND LEE (EADGBE)

Tuning confirmed by various statements by the band that the first EP was all in standard. Thurston's part is just picking behind the bridge, and has lately been using F#F#F#F#EB on the song. Also, Lee is now using GGDDGG w/ a capo at the 4th fret (granted, his part is different nowadays than the original version).

NOTES FOR I DON'T WANT TO PUSH IT - THURSTON AND LEE (EADGBE)

Tuning confirmed by various statements by the band that the first EP was all in standard.

NOTES FOR THE GOOD AND THE BAD - LEE AND KIM (EADGBE)

Tuning confirmed by various statements by the band that the first EP was all in standard. Like other early songs, tuning is not of large importance here. I suspect drumsticks were involved in this song, but I don't know.

NOTES FOR SHE'S IN A BAD MOOD - THURSTON ("ANYTHING")

This is a tough tuning to transcribe since it relies on the strings not being tuned exactly. On the record it's something like:

  • E tune down to C-ish
  • A tune down to D#-ish
  • D tune up to D#-ish - not an exact octave above the previous string
  • G tune down a bit to somewhere in between F# and G
  • B tune down a bit to somewhere in between F# and G but not exactly the same as the previous string
  • E tune down to just above G (nearly G#) It's really that cluster in the middle that's key, a dissonant mixture of D# through G. Thurston uses the same Knox guitar for this and "World Looks Red". Kim uses it on "Shaking Hell" and "Inhuman".

NOTES FOR SHE'S IN A BAD MOOD - LEE (EBDGBE)

    Taken from live shows.

NOTES FOR PROTECT ME YOU - THURSTON (EEEEEE)

I'm pretty sure he plays a guitar tuned to all Es for this song.

NOTES FOR I WANNA BE YR DOG - LEE (EADGBE)

Like most covers, this is played in standard. Confirmed by live shows.

    NOTES FOR SHAKING HELL - LEE (E A D G B E)

On the 2006 tour, Lee is using a Tele in EADECD for this song, and he recalls this is what he used back in the 80s. However, you can clearly hear him retune to standard after World/Confusion and before Shaking/Making on any given 1983 recording.

NOTES FOR SHAKING HELL - KIM ("ANYTHING")

I suspect Kim just used whatever guitar Thurston handed to her when they traded instruments. For instance, she used F#F#GGAA at an '86 show after White Kross. On the 2006 tour she is using EADGBE! The album was the Knox in the "Bad Mood" tuning though.

NOTES FOR INHUMAN - LEE (ZITHER)

Originally, Lee played a modified zither on this song. He switched to guitar in late '83. In 1985, Lee was using EG#EG#EG#.

NOTES FOR INHUMAN - KIM ("ANYTHING")

On the record she used the Knox guitar, but would use any tuning live. Drumstick involved!

NOTES FOR THE WORLD LOOKS RED - THURSTON ("ANYTHING")

    See notes for "Bad Mood".

NOTES FOR THE WORLD LOOKS RED - LEE (EADECD)

Tuning confirmed by Venlo disc, early live tuning. Screwdriver behind 9th fret.

NOTES FOR CONFUSION IS SEX - LEE (EADECD)

Tuning confirmed by Venlo disc, early live tuning. Screwdriver behind 9th fret.

    NOTES FOR MAKING THE NATURE SCENE - LEE (E A D G B E)

This tuning comes from the Live in Venlo disc. However, tuning isn't really important for this song (recent set lists just say "any").

NOTES FOR KILL YR IDOLS - THURSTON AND LEE (GGDDD#D#)

    Confirmed by videos/set lists.

NOTES FOR BROTHER JAMES - THURSTON AND LEE (GGDDD#D#)

Confirmed by Guitar Player February '89, Guitar Player December '92, Guitar Player July '94, etc etc.

NOTES FOR EARLY AMERICAN - THURSTON AND LEE (GGDDD#D#)

In Guitar School Nov '92 they say that the Kill Yr Idols EP was mostly "2 guitars in unison tuning". Lee certainly uses GDD#, but on a video I have, it seems like Thurston might be using the same guitar used on Bad Mood/World Red. He has a drumstick under the strings so I'm guessing the tuning isn't a big deal.

NOTES FOR INTRO - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

This tuning is basically confirmed by being part of Brave Men Run, whose tuning is listed in the "Confusion is Next" book.

NOTES FOR BRAVE MEN RUN - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Tuning confirmed for both guitarists by the "Confusion is Next" book.

NOTES FOR SOCIETY IS A HOLE - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Almost positive both are in F#F#F#F#EB since SY's 1984 shows went Brave Men Run / Society Is a Hole / Death Valley '69 / etc... I don't think the tunings listed in the Bad Moon liners for Lee (see Ghost Bitch) are for this song. However, I could be wrong...

NOTES FOR I LOVE HER ALL THE TIME - THURSTON (GGCCA#A#)

Played with a drumstick under the strings at the 12th fret, which is rubbed with a second drumstick. I don't think that the specific tuning is necessary though..

Confirmed by Bad Moon Rising liner notes.

NOTES FOR I LOVE HER ALL THE TIME - LEE (D#D#C#C#GG)

Played with a screwdriver under the strings at the 9th fret.

Confirmed by Bad Moon Rising liner notes, Guitar Player February 1989, and "Confusion is Next" book. Circa '91/92 he may have been using D#C#G#.

NOTES FOR GHOST BITCH - THURSTON (GGCCA#A#)

Confirmed by live video (Thurston doesn't change guitars after I Love Her All The Time).

NOTES FOR GHOST BITCH - LEE (?)

Lee uses an acoustic guitar w/ a pick-up to achieve the droning feedback on this song. It sounds like it's mostly tuned to F#s, perhaps the F#AAF#F#F# "good for something" tuning listed on the early Death Valley '69 lyrics?

    NOTES FOR I'M INSANE - THURSTON -- n/a

On the Gila Monster Jamboree video, Thurston doesn't play any guitar, he just reads the lyrics off of cards. However, there are amp settings for him in the Bad Moon Rising liners...

NOTES FOR I'M INSANE - LEE (DDDDEA)

Confirmed by Bad Moon Rising liners. On Gila Monster vid, he uses F#F#F#F#EB though, so I doubt specific tuning is essential.

NOTES FOR JUSTICE IS MIGHT - THURSTON -- n/a

I don't believe Thurston plays guitar on this song.

NOTES FOR JUSTICE IS MIGHT - LEE (AAEEF#A)

Confirmed by Bad Moon Rising liners. Thurston tweaks the knobs on Lee's amp during the outro of this song.

NOTES FOR DEATH VALLEY '69 - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Confirmed by "Confusion is Next", Musician Mag Dec. 1995, Guitar Player Dec. 92, Guitar Player Aug. '91, Guitar Player Feb. 1989, etc etc etc.

NOTES FOR FLOWER - THURSTON (GGDDD#D#)

Confirmed by Gila Monster Jamboree video and '99 set lists.

NOTES FOR FLOWER - LEE (GGDDD#D#)

Lee uses a screwdriver behind the 5th fret, and detunes frequently through-out the song. Confirmed by Gila Monster video and '99 set lists.

NOTES FOR HALLOWEEN - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Confirmed by Guitar Player October 1986.

NOTES FOR TOM VIOLENCE - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#GGAA)

Confirmed by live videos and set lists.

Confirmed by set lists and my own eyes.

    NOTES FOR SHADOW OF A DOUBT - LEE (F# F# A A E E)

    Confirmed by Lee.

NOTES FOR STARPOWER - THURSTON AND LEE(F#F#F#F#EB)

    Confirmed by 1986 video.

NOTES FOR IN THE KINGDOM #19 - THURSTON AND LEE

Thurston and Lee play the guitars on this song, Mike Watt plays bass, and Steve drums. It's never been played live, but probably either of the F# tunings was used..

NOTES FOR GREEN LIGHT - THURSTON AND LEE (GGDDD#D#)

    Confirmed by videos.

NOTES FOR DEATH TO OUR FRIENDS - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

    Confirmed by '86 video.

NOTES FOR SECRET GIRL - THURSTON AND LEE (anything)

The main instrument in this song is a piano track played on a walkman thru an amplifier. While Thurston and Lee do make feedback overtop, I don't think precise tunings are necessary, they just use whatever they'd been previously using.

NOTES FOR MARILYN MOORE - THURSTON (GGCCD#D#)

This was the best I could come up with (or GGCCA#A#?) after watching an '86 vid...

NOTES FOR MARILYN MOORE - LEE (CCD#GGD)

Confirmed by live shows. He used a slide on a tiny guitar that he holds up like a lap steel.

NOTES FOR EXPRESSWAY - THURSTON AND LEE (EG#EG#EG#)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991 + many many other interviews, set lists, etc etc. Lee uses a slide.

NOTES FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA - THURSTON (F#F#GGAA)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991 and many set lists/videos.

NOTES FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA - LEE (DDDDAA)

Figured out by ear at first (thanks Larse), later confirmed by my own eyes.

NOTES FOR CATHOLIC BLOCK - THURSTON (F#F#F#F#EB)

Thurston uses a slide towards the end of the song.
Confirmed by videos and set lists.

NOTES FOR CATHOLIC BLOCK - LEE (DDDDAA)

    Confirmed by '87 video.

NOTES FOR BEAUTY LIES IN THE EYE - LEE (F#F#C#C#C#C#)

Pretty clear based on 04/23/87 audio recording. Middle C#s in unison, top C#s an octave above. Later in the year he may have the top 3 strings in unison (so, regular G string tuned up to C# rather than down).

NOTES FOR STEREO SANCTITY - THURSTON AND LEE (GGDDD#D#)

Confirmed by videos and set lists.

NOTES FOR PIPELINE - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

NOTES FOR 'CROSS THE BREEZE - LEE (EEEEF#F#)

Confirmed by Guitar Player February 1989.

    NOTES FOR ERIC'S TRIP - THURSTON (BBxxF#F#)

Thurston plays an old guitar the band had for ages called a "Drifter" (stolen in '99). It had 4 bass strings on it and he fretted all the notes with a drumstick. The lower strings were in unison B, and the higher strings in unison F#. Confirmed by sonic techs.

NOTES FOR ERIC'S TRIP - LEE (EBEEAB)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991, Guitar Player February 1989.

NOTES FOR TOTAL TRASH - THURSTON (GGDDD#D#)

Confirmed by Guitar Player February 1989.

NOTES FOR TOTAL TRASH - LEE (GGDDGG)

NOTES FOR CANDLE - THURSTON (ACCGG#C)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991, Guitar Player February 1989.

NOTES FOR CANDLE - LEE (AAEEAA)

Confirmed by set lists and videos.

NOTES FOR RAIN KING - THURSTON (D#D#AAEE)

This tuning was a complete mystery until the band had to relearn the Daydream songs for the 2007 performances of the album in full...in fact, it remained a mystery after they began learning the songs! It took quite a bit of detective work to crack this long forgotten tuning, but this is what they were able to come up with.

NOTES FOR RAIN KING - LEE (EBEEAA)

A variation of EBEEAB, this is what Lee has decided on using for the 2007 Daydream Nation gigs, and he's pretty sure it was the original tuning.

NOTES FOR KISSABILITY - THURSTON (ACCGG#C)

    Confirmed by '89 video.

NOTES FOR KISSABILITY - LEE (EBEEAB)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991, Guitar Player February 1989.

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991.

NOTES FOR MARY CHRIST - THURSTON (F#F#F#F#EB)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991 and Confusion is Next.

NOTES FOR MARY CHRIST - LEE (FFCCAA)

Though listed in sonic tech notes as GGDDGG, Mary-Christ is almost certainly in an FCA tuning that was also used for "Lee #2", as well as Lee's solo "Here" piece.

NOTES FOR KOOL THING - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Confirmed by Musician December 1995, Guitar Player December 1992, Guitar Player August 1991, Confusion is Next.

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991.

NOTES FOR DISAPPEARER - THURSTON (CCEBGD)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991.

Based on harmonics from 10/20/90 performance. I'm 99% sure this is correct.

NOTES FOR MILDRED PIERCE - THURSTON AND LEE (EADGBE)

    Confirmed.

NOTES FOR CINDERELLA'S BIG SCORE - THURSTON (ACCGG#C)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991.

    Confirmed by Sonic TExx..

NOTES FOR TITANIUM EXPOSE - THURSTON (EGDGED)

Confirmed by Guitar Player August 1991. Note that the LP version is slowed down by a half step.

NOTES FOR TITANIUM EXPOSE - LEE (EGDDGG)

Confirmed by '90 video. Note that the LP version is slowed down by a half step.

NOTES FOR LEE #2 - THURSTON (bass)

Thurston's bassline can (fortunately) only be heard on the live versions of the song, or the exclusive 'bass-only' mix released via an web-only Mix Tape.

NOTES FOR LEE #2 - LEE (FFCCAA)

Confirmed by a set list indicating there was a Jaguar in FCA. This tuning sounds exactly like the song.

NOTES FOR LEE #2 - KIM (EGDGED)

Kim doesn't play on the demo, but does on the outtake released on the Goo Deluxe Edition. During the few live versions she plays guitar, right after "My Friend Goo" so she probably uses EGDGED for this as well, but I'm not sure.

NOTES FOR 100% - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Confirmed by Guitar Player December 1992. Thurston uses a slide, and claims it doesn't really matter what tuning he uses. In '95, Lee used any tuning based in F# (AF#EF#EB for example) on this song.

NOTES FOR SWIMSUIT ISSUE - THURSTON (EGDGED)

Confirmed by Guitar Player December 1992.

NOTES FOR SWIMSUIT ISSUE - LEE (EEBBEF#)

Confirmed by Guitar Player December 1992.

Confirmed by Guitar Player December 1992.

Played with a capo at the 3rd fret.

NOTES FOR DRUNKEN BUTTERFLY - THURSTON (F#F#GGAA)

    Confirmed by videos.

NOTES FOR DRUNKEN BUTTERFLY LEE (F#F#GGAA)

    Confirmed by videos.

NOTES FOR DRUNKEN BUTTERFLY - KIM (F#F#GA)

Confirmed by Guitar World November 1992. The only instance of Kim using a specific alternate bass tuning.

NOTES FOR SHOOT - THURSTON (F#F#F#F#EB)

    Confirmed by videos.

NOTES FOR SHOOT - LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Although sonic tech documents suggest Lee used AF#EF#EB for "Shoot", and he did use a different guitar for this song than "100%" etc, but I think it's because he needed a trem bar and/or string behind the bridge for "Shoot" so he used a Jaguar instead of the Travis Bean. There's at least one show where they play "Shoot" after "Kool Thing" rather than opening with it, and he uses the Travis without any apparent retuning.

NOTES FOR WISH FULFILLMENT - THURSTON (F#F#F#F#EB)

Although it says he uses EGDGED in Guitar Player December 1992, I'm pretty sure he was actually in F#F#F#F#EB based on the "Guido" demo and other aspects of his part on the song. I could still be wrong....

NOTES FOR WISH FULFILLMENT - LEE (EEBBEF#)

Confirmed by Guitar Player December 1992.

NOTES FOR WISH FULFILLMENT - KIM (DEGDBB)

    Confirmed by sonic techs.

Confirmed by Guitar World November 1992.

NOTES FOR SUGAR KANE - LEE (GGBDGA)

Confirmed by Guitar World November 1992.

NOTES FOR ORANGE ROLLS, ANGEL'S SPIT - THURSTON AND LEE (GGDDD#D#)

Confirmed by Guitar Player December 1992. In sonic tech notes, Lee is said to use GGDDGG, but he picks out GDD# pretty clearly on the 07/04/92 show.

NOTES FOR YOUTH AGAINST FASCISM - THURSTON AND LEE (GGDDD#D#)

...or so it says in Guitar Player December 1992, but live Thurston used ACCGG#C and Lee used AAEEAA. Both Thurston and Lee attack their guitars with drumsticks or slides. I'm pretty sure they used these tunings on the record and not GDD#.

NOTES FOR NIC FIT - THURSTON & LEE (GGDDD#D#)

Sonic tech notes indicate Lee used the "I Love Her All The Time" tuning for "Nic Fit", but live footage shows him using GGDDxx. Thurston played guitar on early live versions of "Nic Fit" but when it became paired with "No Part II" he stuck to the mic and let Lee handle the guitar.

NOTES FOR ON THE STRIP - THURSTON (ACCGG#C)

    Confirmed by sonic techs.

NOTES FOR JC - KIM (bass)

Kim uses a slide at the end.

NOTES FOR STALKER - THURSTON AND LEE (F#F#F#F#EB)

Based on the demo recordings of the song, I'm pretty sure both guitars are in F#F#F#F#EB.

NOTES FOR PURR - THURSTON (EGDGED)

    Confirmed by Sonic Techs.

NOTES FOR PURR - LEE (EEBBEF#)

    Confirmed by Sonic Techs.

NOTES FOR CREME BRULEE - THURSTON AND LEE (n/a)

Thurston and Lee don't really play much on this song, which was basically an in-studio creation/improvisation while Kim played guitar and Thurston tried to get an amp working.. any tuning would suffice.

NOTES FOR CREME BRULEE - KIM (DEGDBB)

    Confirmed by sonic techs.

    NOTES FOR WINNER'S BLUES - THURSTON (EEBEG#B)

Confirmed by set lists and videos.

    NOTES FOR SKINK - KIM

In Guitar Player July '94 Kim says there's no bass on this song and that she plays a guitar tuned to BEGDBB, but she plays bass on all live versions...

NOTES FOR SCREAMING SKULL - THURSTON (GGDDD#D#)

Although Guitar Player July '94 lists EGDGED for "Screaming Skull", there are several errors regarding tunings and based on Thurston's live performances of the song, GDD# seems more likely.

NOTES FOR SCREAMING SKULL - LEE (GGCGCD)

    Unconfirmed, but likely.

Wedge a file/chisel under the strings over the neck pick-up. When I first saw them perform this @ Bumbershoot, I'm pretty sure Thurston used FGCFAF#. On the subsequent tour, he was using GADBEG. Since his entire part is plinky-plink-plink, it really doesn't matter.
