EARLY AMERICAN tab by chris lawrence (mustang@islandnet.com) both gtrs: G G D D Eb Eb I think Lee is in the left speaker and Thurston is in the right. Lee uses a screwdriver under the strings and Thurston uses a drumstick. Thurston's tuning doesn't seem to matter. left speaker: intro: I guess his screwdriver is around the 10th fret, but if you don't want to use one, trem pick these notes: Eb-------------------------------------------------------- Eb-------------------------------------------------------- D-----------------------------12-------------------------- D------------------10---------10-------------------------- G---10------------------------10--------------0-0-0-0-etc- G--------------------------------------------------------- start off playing the first note, then add the 2nd, then convert to the chord at the end. for the last open G's there, bring the trem bar up then down (lee actually bends the string behind the nut). for the vocal section, play this chord: Eb--9-- Eb--9-- D---8-- D---8-- G------ G------ arpeggiate as you wish. also throw in the open D's occasionally. if you choose to use a screwdriver for a more "chimey" effect, i'd suggest placing it behind the 7th fret and bending the D/Eb strings up to match whatever pitch you want, while hitting the G string on occasion for the D tone. outro: Eb---------- Eb---------- D--6-6-6-6-- D--6-6-6-6-- G----------- G----------- palm-mute this note and play continuously until it comes time to hit the low G and drop w/ the trem bar (or bend behind nut if you can find a way to make the pitch go down!), to a note somewhere between F# and G. drone this til the end. right speaker: slide a drumstick under the strings and just pick behind it, play some pick scrapes and mutes etc for effect... the vocal part chord, which is arpeggiated as you wish, goes: Eb-11-- Eb--9-- this is if you choose not to use a drumstick D--10-- (the tones are incidental depending on where D------ you place the stick + how long the neck is G------ etc etc etc...) G------ occasionally slide the 11th fret note up to the 12th fret. for the outro, simply strike the drumstick in a percussive manner along w/ the drumbeat. or just chug pick scrapes in the same rhythm. last updated: 3/4/02 ------------------------------------------------ THE SONIC YOUTH GUITAR/BASS TABLATURE ARCHIVE: http://www.islandnet.com/~mustang/tab/index.html ------------------------------------------------
