ANAGRAMA From Sonic Youth Records #1. Okay, a note about the tunings on this song: Thurston is in the "pavement" tuning: CGDGBB (that's a LOW C, and the B's are in unison). This may be off by a few tones, but it works. Lee is in GGDAGA (low G's in unison, A above the 3rd G, in unison with the other A. The 3rd G is the same as the regular G string...er... see the Sunday guitar tab). Kim is in CGGDDD (both G's are the same, and all D's are the same as the open D string..very low) Thurston is loudest in the right speaker, Lee is audible in the left, and Kim is loudest in the left, I guess, but it's hard to tell who's who sometimes. K, I didn't tab much of Lee's, since so much of it is apparently random, but here's what I got: Thurston's part: B------- B------- G---0--- D------- G------- C------- Thurston uses an MXR Blue Box for the alternating octave effect on this note, as well as his trem bar. Then he starts strumming the open G and B strings: B----------------- B--0-0-0-0-0-0---- G--0-0-0-0-0-0-etc. Then: B--17-17-17--12-12-12---7-7-7-- B--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0- G--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0- After that, I think Thurston hits that same open note again (he does it 4 or 5 times during the song). at 2:11 he plays something like this (I think this is where I crossed Kim's part w/ Thurston's): B--10-10-10-10-10--7-7-7--10-10-10-10-10-7-7-7- B--10-10-10-10-10--7-7-7--10-10-10-10-10-7-7-7- G---------------------------------------------- D---------------------------------------------- That goes over and over, alternating, etc. w/ open strings tossed in and whatnot. at 3:05, something like this is played: B-8-8-8-8-8-----------------10-10-10-10-10-10-10- B-8-8-8-8-8-----------------10-10-10-10-10-10-10- G-0-0-0-0-0-etc.---7-7-5-5---0--0--0--0--0--0--0-etc. D-0-0-0-0-0------------------0--0--0--0--0--0--0- G------------------------------------------------ (that's repeated over and over, and the open G and D aren't added til after a few repeats). Around 3:19, one of the guitars begins strumming this really high note and continues til almost 5:42! B--20-20-20-20-20-20- B--20-20-20-20-20-20-etc. G-------------------- It gets sorta crazy, of course, with more overdubs, but theres one guitar playing: B-20-20-20-20-20-20-20- B-20-20-20-20-20-20-20-etc G--0--0--0--0--0--0--0- D--0--0--0--0--0--0--0- G--0--0--0--0--0--0--0- C---------------------- Then there's this riff, which is my BAD attempt at combining several guitarlines: B---------7-------7---- B---------0--0----7---- G-----0---------7------ D--0--0---------------- G--0------------------- C---------------------- that's quite improvised and shouldn't be taken note for note. lots of open strings and such randomly tossed around. After that it's just random variations on that. This is Lee's part (just the intro, really). It seems like only Kim is playing something concrete, and everyone else (especially Lee) is just hitting random notes. But, at 5:53, Lee plays: w/ delay A------------------------------ G------------------------------ A--10---9---------------------- D----------9-------------7\9--- G------------------7-9-7------- G------------------------------ Kim's Part: kim does some hand slides and quiet open note plucking for a bit during the intro. She kicks in at 0:47 playing this: D--5-5---7-7-7---9-9-9-9-9-9-etc------10-10-10-10-10-10-10-etc- D--5-5---7-7-7---9-9-9-9-9-9-etc------10-10-10-10-10-10-10-etc- D--5-5---7-7-7---9-9-9-9-9-9-etc------10-10-10-10-10-10-10-etc- G-------------------------------------------------------------- G-------------------------------------------------------------- C-------------------------------------------------------------- Then, after Thurston does his 2nd big G chord tremolo thing (2:11), she starts using a little black dinosaur distortion pedal as a slide way up high on the neck. And after Thurston's 3rd big G chord (3:05): D--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0------ D--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-etc.- and if you listen, she'll occasionally toss in these notes: D--10--9- in various orders and places... D--10--9- as well as 7th fret notes, etc...just every once in a while she taps some frets. This is when the big build-up kicks in: D--10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10--- D--10-10-10-10-10-10-10-10---etc. etc. etc. After the drums have kicked in for a bit, she starts playing the same thing she was before: D--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0------ D--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-etc.- and if you listen, she'll occasionally toss in these notes: D--10--9- in various orders and places... D--10--9- (can you tell i copy and pasted that?) At 4:25 she begins this: D---9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9---------10-10-10-10-10-10-10-------- D---9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9-etc.----10-10-10-10-10-10-10-etc..-- and then: D--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0---- then: ---10-10-10-10-10-10-10-etc.-until 5:45, D--0-0-0-0-0-0-0-0-etc. ---10-10-10-10-10-10-10------approximately however, she does continue to add open notes and 9th fret notes during that entire section. listen, they're quite clear. That's when the climax comes to a halt and the song shifts pace, during which I can't tell what she's playing at all. It sounds like someone is messing around with the knobs on a phaser, and that may or may not be her. SOMETIME during that part, she comes in playing: D--5-5-5-5-5-5-5----- ---9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9- D--5-5-5-5-5-5-5-etc- and at 7:30 she goes up to: ---9-9-9-9-9-9-9-9- etc And then, finally, she goes back to: D--5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5- D--5-5-5-5-5-5-5-5-etc Which fades out to the end... And that's all I know (right now).
