Society is a hole
It makes me lie to my friends
It's running down my street
With white power sneakers
On the beautiful beat of black feet
Society is a hole
Society is a hole
It beats my friends' big heads
My friends have big heads
I can understand it but I don't recommend it
You got big big hair
And everybody's scared
Society is a hole
It makes me lie to my friends
The assault of holy noise
There's a slap in my face
My friends are girls wrapped in boys
We're living in pieces
I want to live in peace
Society is a hole

Track length: 5:57 (4:51)
First Known Performance: 05/19/84
Last Known Performance: 06/12/85
NOTES:
- First track length is original Blast First sequence, bracketed
time is DGC reissue.
- The title was born out of a Black Flag lyric that Thurston misheard. The song "Rise Above" contains the line "Society's arms of control", which Thurston misinterpreted as "Society is a fucking hole". Impressed with the lyric and later discovering it was incorrect, he took the line for himself.
- The track segues in from Brave Men Run via a looped sample
from Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music" album. The sample
actually plays thru a significant amount of the song.
- Ends with a tape of the Stooges' "Not Right" being played
thru an amplifier, which Thurston or Lee would frequently
need to do while changing guitars between songs. Other popular
songs at the time were Madonna's "Into the Groove" and Ratt's "Round and Round".
