SMELL THE HORSE TOUR

It sounded like a good idea at the time -- Sonic Youth, rapidly gaining a wider fanbase after years of underground exposure, touring with the 3rd best garage band in the world -- Neil Young & Crazy Horse. Well, things don't always pan out as they seem, and this tour is a good example. Night after night, SY were frequently booed and harassed until they left the stage, commonly after the lengthy pulsating feedback outlude of "Expressway to Yr Skull" (which Neil says soothed him in his dressing room before the show). If there's any question why, I have some advice -- go buy Neil's "WELD" video, filmed on this tour, and it will immediately answer all your questions within the first 30 seconds of "Hey Hey, My My" (hint: watch the crowd). In any case, Neil was delighted enough by Sonic Youth to invite them to the unlikely setting of the acoustic Bridge Benefit that year, but that's a whole other story.

Reason for cancellation: Neil had to cancel the first 5 dates above due to an illness, and rebooked them for the end of the tour. Unfortunately, SY had already arranged to be in Hawaii/Japan at the time, so they booked the 4/4/91 LA shows to compensate their fans. The Saskatoon show was cancelled due to problems transporting equipment, and the Spokane gig was cancelled for reasons unknown.
