DAYDREAM NATION 33 1/3

After delays, a real-deal release date has finally been set for Matthew Stearnes' installment on Daydream Nation for Continuum Books' 33 and 1/3 series. In March of '07, you'll be able to find bound copies of the volume in unsucky book and record shops across the land, and through the SY online store. In the meantime, an excerpt from the book has been posted on the series' blog.

DRIFT IN TOKYO

Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer will present DRIFT at SuperDeluxe in Tokyo on April 15, just days before the beginning of the Sonic Youth Japan tour. Also on the bill will be DJ tenshi to koukotsu and another guest DJ that you might have heard of... Info at the calendar page.

SY LIVE AT COACHELLA

Returning from a mutual mind-blowing trip to Beijing and Shanghai, SY will make an apparation at Coachella in Indio, California. Also on the bill is sometimes SY collaborator Chris Corsano with his new project called Bjork.

TEXT OF LIGHT 'METAL BOX'

A 3 CD set spanning the years from Text of Light's first gig in 1999 through to 2005 will be released June 19. Lee Ranaldo, Alan Licht, William Hooker, Christian Marclay, Tim Barnes, Ulrich Kreiger and DJ Olive in concert and in the studio. The first 1000 copies of this lavish set will be issued in a special metal box with the 'ToL' logo embossed on the lid, as both a tribute to, and a pastiche of PiL. SOLO ACTION

This Wednesday March 14 Steve Performs with Two Dollar Guitar at the Gold Hawk in Hoboken. Friday March 16 Bowery Broadsides Series at the Bowery Poetry Project hosted by Farfalla Press presents Lee Ranaldo and Jessica Rogers, in the third night of a year long reading series. First fifty patrons receive a free broadside from each of the poets. Admission is free with a two drink minimum. Members of Sonic Youth keep turning up at the Issue Project Room in Brooklyn for the next month: Jan 27 Thurston, Kim, and Lee perform in the Rhys Chatham Guitar Trio for 15 guitars, and February 10 Lee and Leah Singer perform. Thurston is in the midst of a streak of solo shows trekking up and down the Northeast through April. Info at the calendar page.

EPIC MORTE

A new 20 minute composition by Lee for Quartet and Tape, "Epic Morte", will get it's premiere performances this week by the X-Quartet of Switzerland, for whom it was written, and will reappear in January: Nov 11, Audio Art Festival Krakau, Poland - Nov 13 Katowice, Artistic Agency Silesia, Radio Katowice, Poland - Jan 26 Forum New Music Lucerne, Switzerland - Jan 29 ISCM Basel, Theatre Basel, Switzerland. The complete program features new works by FM Einheit, Knut Remond, Lee Ranaldo and Stephan Wittwer. X-Quartet is Raphael Camenisch, saxophone; Jürg Henneberger, piano; Aleksander Gabrys, double bass and Daniel Buess, drums/percussion.

MUSIC IS A BETTER NOISE

Both Kim and Thurston have pieces in the upcoming exhibition at PS1 entitled 'Music is a Better Noise'. The show aims to bring together musicians who make art and artists who make music, or for whom music is an integral part of their creative process. Others involved include Barbara Ess, Alan Vega, Don van Vliet, Christian Marclay, and Devandra Banhart. More info.

OLD NEWS 2006

Lee and Leah Singer are both included in the current exhibition "Old News" at the CNEAI institution outside Paris. Old News 2006 is a group show of artists works related to newspapers, divided so that each artist clips newspaper pages during an accruing period of 3 months, so the show is ever-expanding throughout it's duration. Lee's works relate to his current drawing series based on clipped newspaper photos. French-language info.

SOLO ACTIONS

Lee will perform with Text of Light Jan 12 at the Whitney Museum in conjunction with their current Albers/Lazslo Moholy-Nagy exhibition. They will be playing with his film "Lightplay" as well as slides and with other projections by Leah Singer. Lineup this time out will be Lee Ranaldo, Tim Barnes and Alan Licht. Show at 7:30 in the Kaufman film/video screening room, and it's a Friday so it's pay what you wish.

LIMITED EDTION LP'S AND NEW DVD'S AT THE SY.COM STORE

One night during Sonic Youth's 2004 Australian Tour, Thurston, Steve, Lee, and Jim headed to the Saucerlike Records warehouse in Melbourne. In front of a small audience they cut 4 sides of improvised music direct to disk at the last LP pressing plant in the country. Now available at the store are copies of the resulting double 12" with cover images by Kim, in a limited edition of 800 copies. Also newly available at the store are several DVD's: the Olivier Assayas film Demonlover featuring soundtrack by Sonic Youth (and bonus documentary on recording the soundtrack), the Free Tibet concert film with live SY footage, and Lee's 'Drift' collaboration with Leah Singer.
