SONIC MIXTAPE #3

The third installment of the archive-raiding Sonic Youth mixtapes is available via the link above. This volume consists of unheard outtakes from NYC Ghosts + Flowers, Sonic Nurse, and a Thousand Leaves, a killer deep cut from 'Confusion is Next' and recently discovered rarities uncovered while compiling the 'Goo' deluxe edition so rare that they are only available here on this mixtape.

TEXT OF LIGHT AT THE KITCHEN

Lee Ranaldo, Ulrich Krieger, Alan Licht, Christian Marclay, and William Hooker will perform as the Text of Light group alongside the films of Stan Brakhage at the Kitchen in NYC on Oct. 6th and 7th. Sets start at 8:30 each night.

TEXT OF LIGHT TRIO AT FILMMAKERS CO-OP BENEFIT

SMELLS LIKE RECORDS AT CMJ

Steve's label, Smells Like Records, will present a night of music during this year's CMJ Festival Sept. 15 at The Living Room in NYC. The complete line-up includes Smells Like Records artists and friends : Kieran McGee, Ursa Minor, Smokey's Secret Family (featuring guitarist Smokey Hormell), Chris Lee with Tim Luntzel and Steve Shelley, Jesse Harris, and Tony Scherr. DJ's will be Aaron Mullan, Tom Surgal, Hal Willner, and Glenn Kotche. More info here.

THURSTON AND JIM WITH YOSHIMI IN JAPAN

Thurston and Jim will perform with Yoshimi as Blind Beast at two concerts celebrating the 15th Anniversary of Time Bomb Records: September 18 at the Tokyo Quattro, and September 19 at the Osaka Quattro. Also on both bills are the Evens, plus more in each city. Scoop on the Smash site.

FOUR NEW SY SONGS DEBUTED AT FLYWHEEL

Thurston, Kim and Steve made an impromptu appearance at the Flywheel in Easthampton, MA on July 18 performing 4 new songs Sonic Youth have been working on in rehearsals. The songs were 'Helen Lundeberg', 'Or','Do You Believe in Rapture' and "Pink Steam'. Also appearing that night were Afri Rampo and Lightning Bolt. Footage of the evening can be found here.

SONIC YOUTH AT ARTHURFEST

Sonic Youth are excited to be part of Arthur Magazine's Arthurfest in L.A. September 4. The lineup is almost too good to believe, check the Arthur site . Also, a second California date has just been added: September 2 in San Diego at the House of Blues.

20 YEARS AGO TODAY

June 12, 1985, Steve Shelley played his first show with Sonic Youth at Folk City in NYC. The show started with four drummers: Steve, Bob Bert, and King Coffey and Theresa Taylor of the Butthole Surfers. Eventually the others departed and SY entered the era of the classic quartet. The songs 'Green Light' and 'Expressway to yr Skull' also made their debut at this show.

WORST MOMENTS

Sonic Youth's sound engineer Aaron Mullan wrote an article for Vice magazine online about his worst moments at the sound board.

UPCOMING SY RELEASES

Sonic Youth are putting the finishing touches on their Deluxe Edition re-issue of 1990's "Goo". The 2xCD edition will be released by Universal/Geffen while the 4xLP vinyl edition will be released by SY's own Goofin' imprint via SLR. The Deluxe Edition of "Goo" will include the original LP remastered along with remixed/remastered 8-track demos, B-sides, rehearsal tracks, studio out-takes and more. A deluxe full-color LP size booklet will be included in the vinyl box set with essays by Byron Coley and Mark Kates.


SYR 6 is also being prepared for release. This CD edition of the SYR series is a recording of the benefit concert held at and for The Anthology Film Archives on April,12 2003. Sonic Youth performed with drummer/percussionist Tim Barnes. Part of the proceeds of this CD will again benefit the Anthology Film Archives.
