FOREIGN LAND

SONIC NURSE AND CORPORATE GHOST

Sonic Youth's nineteenth long player is now available worldwide and is entitled "Sonic Nurse". Describing the record, the band has asked listeners to imagine "Bare Trees" era Fleetwood Mac jamming with "Jealous Again" era Black Flag.

Geffen Records released this album on the CD format, and Goofin' Records the double LP in an attractive gatefold cover. The 2 x LP will be available through Revolver. Both the CD and the LP are now available at the new sonicyouth.com store.

Sonic Youth have also just released "Corporate Ghost." This is the first official SY DVD; a complete retrospective of the band's music videos from the Geffen era plus bonus material all scoped and roped by filmmaker Lance Bangs and offered to you as an unbeatable value. Twenty-three videos are included with over 3 hours of commentary and interviews by the band and others, with bonus videos, interviews, and more.

Full audio commentary is included by the directors Spike Jonze, Todd Haynes, Tamra Davis, Mark Romanek, Dave Markey, Richard Kern, Tom Surgal and Phil Morrison. Furthermore, Sonic recollections are offered by Mike Watt, Kathleen Hanna, Jason Lee, Lance Bangs, Todd Haynes, Tamra Davis, Dave Markey, and Richard Kern.

Also included are a Sonic photo memory montage entitled "Spikes Eye" by Spike Jonze and a 1990 fan letter film document called "My Sonic Room" by Patty Orsini, plus a few extra nuggets.

All the videos are presented with uncompressed audio so if you blast this thing through the hi-fi you will be able to rock out heartily.

PAL DVD PROBLEMS

Although early DVD's in PAL regions had menu problems, revised copies are now in stores.

NEW YORKER COLLEGE TOUR

Saturday, November 20, Sonic Youth will travel to Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. for a conversation with New Yorker music critic Alex Ross. More information is available here, and tickets are available here.

SONIC YOUTH FALL LIVE DATES

Mid-October is shaping up to have some interesting SY live action. Sonic Youth will play twice in New York, then will pay a visit to New Orleans, and on to Kansas City for a show with PJ Harvey. The band then plays Mexico City for the first time ever, and head out to S.F. to play the Bridge School Benefit.

NEW RELEASES AND SOLO ACTION

Thurston will be gigging thusly:He will be reading with Patti Smith, Sapphire, and John Giorno at the John Giorno Poetry Festival at the Rubin Museum in NYC on Nov. 19.

Kim and Jim will perform as a trio with Ikue Mori Friday November 12 at the Knitting Factory in New York. They will open for OOIOO, the group featuring Yoshimi of the Boredoms. More information and tickets available here.

Kim will have an art show in conjunction with Lizzi Bougatsos at: Reena Spaulings Fine Art, 371 Grand Street in NYC. The show runs from September 17 – October 15, 2004. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, noon – 6pm.


Lee will be performing October 27th with Leah Singer at the MOCA in Los Angeles. Monuments:
For Robert Smithson, a live performance using music, film, and readings, will take place at 7pm.

Thurston will perform with Richard Hell and many more at a tribute to Robert Quine at CB's gallery in NYCon Dec. 4. The doors open at 2:30 PM, and the event is scheduled to start at 3:00 and run till 7:00 or 8:00. Participating will be 25 or 30 of Quine's friends and colleagues, each of whom will play music or speak or otherwise present some kind of tribute to Quine. Admission is free. Lee will be travelling to the U.K. with Text of Light. They will perform at the Spitz in London to celebrate the 250th issue of the Wire magazine on Dec. 9. On December 11 they will perform in Dundee, Scotland at the Kill Your Timid Notion Festival.

Thurston and Jim will perform with White Out at Tonic in NYC on Dec. 18.

The members of Sonic Youth plus Mats Gustoffson and more performed a piece of Mats' entitled 'Hidros 3' in October of 2000. This performance is available September 27 as an LP or CD on the Smalltown Supersound label.

On October 5, Artemis Records released a live performance from 1994 of Allen Ginsberg's WICHITA VORTEX SUTRA. The performance features Ginsberg, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith), Philip Glass, Marc Ribot, Arto Lindsay, Michael Blair (Elvis Costello, Tom Waits), Christian Marclay, David Mansfield (Bob Dylan), Stephan Smith, and Elliot Sharp.

Lee has a new book available: 'Lengths & Breaths' from Water Row Books. 'Lengths & Breaths' is a new collection of poems, lyrical memoirs, road visions and more, illustrated with photographs by Cynthia Connolly. More information here.
