SONIC YOUTH ON THE WORLD CAFE

The World Cafe is an hour-long show on Public Radio which features interviews with and performances by contemporary musicians.

In late September Sonic Youth traveled to Philadelphia and visited with host David Dye at Indre studios. The band performed several songs from Murray Street and rapped about the history of the band, the new record, and more. On October 30 the show will be broadcast.

The World Café is syndicated on over 150 stations, and will also be webcast at 2pm and 1am Eastern time. Go to worldcafe.org to find out the stations and streaming info.

THE POETRY ARCHIVES BENEFIT

Wednesday October 23 8:00pm St. Mark's church NYC.

Recordings of many of the greatest 20th century poets are decades old and in very fragile condition. If these recordings aren't restored and transferred to other formats soon, they will be lost forever. Seeking ways to combat the relentless decay of their magnetic tape archives, The Poetry Project and the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University, two of the three poetry centers in the United States with the largest invaluable collections of recordings, are hosting an Archives Benefit. All proceeds will directly benefit The Poetry Project Audio Archive and the Naropa University Audio Archive Preservation and Access Project, being used to convert the precious analogue tapes into digital format.

The endangered archive collections contain thousands of hours of recordings of authors and artists such as Allen Ginsberg, William S. Burroughs, Larry Rivers, John Cage, Audre Lorde, Gregory Corso, Kenneth Koch, Barbara Guest, Gwendolyn Brooks, Alice Walker, Spalding Gray, Andrei Voznesensky, Ted Berrigan, Miguel Pinero, and a multitude of others.

Readers and performers will include Lou Reed, Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo, Jim O'Rourke, Anne Waldman, Steven Taylor, Kenward Elmslie and Yoshiko Chuma. Sample tapes of historic readings will also be played.

SONIC YOUTH ON SUNDANCE, MTV, AND NBC

More and more opportunites to learn about Sonic Youth on televsion... the Sundance channel will air on Friday October 11 a program entitled "The Blank Generation and Silver Rockets/Kool Things: 20 Years of Sonic Youth." The program has been described as a retrospective of SY videos cut together with new interview footage. The program will be shown a few times afterwards as well, check local listings.

Don't forget that yr gonna have two chances to catch SY on television before that:

First, on September 8, MTV2 will begin airing a Sonic Youth special narrated by Kim and Thurston and made by Chris Habib. It features footage shot during the Murray st. sessions at Echo Canyon. The week after it airs it will be available here for download.

Secondly, on October 4 Sonic Youth will be appearing on the Carson Daly show on NBC.

LEE GIGS THIS WEEK AND THE NEXT

This Text of Light group I'm involved in works from a shifting cast of the following characters: Alan Licht/William Hooker/Christian Marclay/DJ Olive/Ulrich Krieger and myself—whoever can make the gigs (Uli lives in Berlin, fer instance). We usually play to the films of Stan Brakhage—in any case the original premise was to improvise (not 'illustrate') to films from the American Avante-Garde (50s-60s etc) which we love. This is an under-known period of American filmic poetics, which everyone should see. So far it's been all Brakhage but a gig this coming weekend adds a new twist, and the first trio formation of the group. --LR

This Sunday Sept 15 is the first of the fall dates, with a benifit for Anthology Film Archives, NYC legendary film venue. Details for that show and others as below:

ANXIOUS RATS UPDATE BY KIM

In D.C. I joined erase errata (who were playing with us) to create a band called "The Anxious Rats". Actually there were several names. Anyway we played five songs in about five minutes. The lovely Mary Timony and her band danced to a song called "Body Bag" that Jenny from Erase Errata had choreographed. It was hot... it rocked, it was the shit. We actually played the body bag song twice, but some of us (me) didn't realize it till it was half over. It was sweet. Thurston shot some 32 sec. films of it on the digital camera maybe we'll post on the site. It was the best band I was ever in. (except for free kitten and sy of course.) Only one ten minute rehersal. Okay that's all for now.

AUSTIN INSTORE UPDATE BY LEE

Austin 073102
First gig of usa tour
Waterloo records instore

Hi from austin--- we did a wacky instore today---art performance---I hit tennis balls down one aisle of the store at an elec gtr on the other side w the amp up full blast. I didn't hit it many times, but it sounded good when I did. Albums n shit fell off the walls as the balls ricochet'd around the store. Meanwhile 5 performances of 5 minutes each took place. Everything revolved around the generation of sound: Thurston and Kim hugged w elec gtrs on full blast//steve on thurston's shoulders held his gtr (up full) while we threw moonpies' (in the wrappers) at him---he was 'bunting' them into the crowd w electric sound. Vanilla and chocolate moonpies///We each played the gtr jack in turn---Thurston first and with his 'tit'///jim did a rush song kareoke whilst T and I interrupted w gtr noise/records were taped to all our hands---mits made out of old albums----in this manner did Kim and I play gtrs while TS&J 'clapped' out percussions, concussions, reductions. Finally, after lengthy tune up and more electric racket serves... thurston did emtpy page and disconnection notice solo. store was full of people; I think everyone had fun.

Pelvic noise-K&T

There is some discussion of a group 'reading' of Raymon Pettibon's play "Sir Drone" at an instore later this summer... Below is a fan's eye view fr the gossip page of the site which fleshes is out a bit more than I have:

Funny, inspiring, etc...
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Y'all, I just returned from Sonic Youth's in-store at Waterloo Records in Austin, TX. Shit! I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time. All 5 members made their way to the stage from the back of the store, with Thurston leading the way honking an old-school bicycle horn above his head... once onstage, all mayhem busted loose. Thurston said something about playing a few songs they wrote "on the way to Waterloo," and I guess he wasn't joking. Lee used a tennis racket/ball to strike his guitar, which was 30ft away... Thurston put Steve Shelley (with guitar in hand) on his shoulders and had the crowd throw MOONPIES at him whenever he yelled "Pull!" Hilarious... They also each took a turn playing 60 secs on just a guitar cord. Thurston held it to his "tit," Jim O' Rourke used it to play "rock, scissors paper" with some 11 year old kid, Shelley played along with a WHO song (which he was the sole one hearing, through headphones), Lee mostly held it to his tongue and Kim violently plugged then unplugged her guitar. Funny stuff...
the hands down highlight of the show, however, was the bands electronic rendition of RUSH's "Fly By Night." Yes, that's right...RUSH..."Fly By Night." O'Rourke did the vocal duties, with Lee and Thurston bustin' ass for the guitar solos...freaking hilarious!!!!! Didn't get a chance to meet any of them. I had to get home pronto when it was over to let my dog out...plus, there were a billion people there, all wanting to shake somebody's hand. I don't know much about Lee and tennis, but, he did seem to hit the guitar pretty frequently...if I would've been hitting a tennis ball at a guitar 30ft away i would've missed for the whole hour straight!

BRIEF NOTES FR THE FIELD (EUROPE) BY LEE

070902
Hi all/we're almost fully thru Europe now and none of us have had the time to do a recap once. This will be brief---it's late at night now/we just played Berlin tonight---haven't for some reason hit germany in 4 or 5 years---and the show was wild, great fun. We've been in France, England, and here and there----just spent an incredible 8 days in Italy, in Sicily, Rome, Sardinia (island off w coast) and elsewhere---best eating of the tour by far. We're still pulling a few 'new oldies' out of our collective hat now and again, but mostly featuring the new record of course. Last night Coco caught Thurston skrewing up the words on Empty Page. O well, heat of the moment, y'know. If any live tapes find their way to the ears of any of you---you may hear some familiar between song banter---this is bcz T has taken to quoting classic 'live album' patter---this being our 'classic rock' album. We're covering the old banter, not the old songs. First person to spot and correctly identify 5 classic concert album quotes will, uh... win something. I think. A few more gigs over here and then we're all home for a short bit, before heading to Japan for 2 shows at the Mt. FujiRock fest. We love Japan... We'll be doing a straight set headlining on the first night (w Butthole Surfers directly before us), and then a "noise experiment' set at noon (!) the next day on one of the smaller stages. Maybe some other
folks will wake up early and join in w us. After Japan we dig in for the US of A --from Texas looping around thru SE to Central Park gig in NYC and on to midwest and W Coast fr LA to Seattle. By then it will be time for us all to go back to school............. What else can I tell you? Jim is showing off his collection of vintage ties onstage, and Kim's official tour color appears to be pink. Most sought after tour book-- Shakey, the Neil Young bio which we're all reading over each other's shoulderz............. Props to our crew: Aaron, Chad, Chris, Eric, Luc, Nic, Peter and to our Dutch Uncle Karlos as well. Hmmm, Steve is the only one I've not mentioned, so I'll hit the hiway and leave you w one word: Steve

MURRAY ST. INFOS AND RELEASE DATE

The new SY album, MURRAY STREET, is now complete and ready to rock. We have good news for SY fans in the United States- the relase date of the CD has been moved one week closer to right now. The date is June 25. Fans of the LP format need not fret: the vinyl edition (packaged in a handsome gatefold cover) is being prepared by the SYR/My-So-Called-Records cartel and will be in stores at the same time.

SONIC YOUTH Murray Street

Kim Gordon
Thurston Moore
Jim O'Rourke
Lee Ranaldo
Steve Shelley

with auxiliary help from:
Don Dietrich: saxophone
Jim Sauter: saxophone

Murray Street is Sonic Youth’s 16th album since they came together in 1981. Many wise owls will note that it has something of a “new” “rock” sound, utilizing material that was worked out in live shows during 2001, and incorporating the textures of recent (overt) avant garde explorations into a ragingly populist framework. Others just ask, “Zep, the Dead or Sparks? Who’s on top now?”
*

Murray Street is (ostensibly) named after the location of Sonic Youth’s studio, in which recording of this album was begun in August, 2001. Following the events of September 11, and the cordoning off the area where their instruments and master tapes were, the band laid low for a while. Sessions began again as soon as it was legally possible. Everything was dusty, but otherwise okay.
*
Murray Street is the first (though hopefully not the last) major label album to feature the massed saxophone work of Jim Sauter and Don Dietrich, best known as two-thirds of America’s most exquisite power trio, Borbetomagus. They play on “Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style”, and if, back in the ‘80s, you would have postulated that this event would have come to pass, somebody would have surely spit in yr eye.
*

Murray Street is the first full Sonic Youth album to include the all-out collaboration (writing, playing, dancing and producing) of Jim O’Rourke.
*

In full streaming video and audio we will present a webcast of Sonic Youth as they prepare for their upcoming summer tour. The concert, titled "Rehearsin' for Ya" will take place at 4pm EST.

SONIC YOUTH FREE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK

We're finally allowed to disclose the NYC venue for the summer tour, and it is Central Park! Last rocked by SY in 1992, the summerstage series in Central Park is a summer-long string of free outdoor concerts. Also on the bill are the composer/ improviser/multi-instrumentalist Wadada Leo Smith, who will be leading a group referred to as his "Golden Quartet", and Monolake, performing a DJ set. The date is August 11.

ECHOCAM IS BACK

Well, it took much longer than we expected but the echocam is back online! Just click on the word "Echocam" to the right and you can watch us eat lunch. We're trying to think up some more amusing antics to use this thing for, look here for updates.

CONCERT CHRONOLOGY AND GEAROGRAPHY NOW ON SY.COM

Many people may already be familiar with these two amazing tools which exist thanks to the tireless travails of Sonic Youth afficianado and web-archivist Chris Lawrence. They now exist right here on sonicyouth.com for your convenience and so that they may be used by a wider audience.

In short: the concert chronology lists every single gig ever played by Sonic Youth, often including the set list and sometimes other bands on the bill or whatever other information Chris can dig up. It also has a unique feature called "tour statistics" for every year so you get get an overview. Wanna know how many times "Theresa's Sound World" was played in 1993? You can find out right here.

The gearography, meanwhile, attempts to list every last instrument ever plucked, bashed, strummed, or tinkled by Sonic Youth. The mass of info here is stunning. Need to cop Lee's Moogerfooger settings? No problem. Just follow this link and start clicking away.

SONIC YOUTH SUMMER TOURING 2002

Hey All---we're currently planning summer touring schedules to coincide with the release of the new album. For more details and to buy tickets online, head over to our calendar section.

SONIC YOUTH SEEKS HELP FINDING EVOL TOUR TAPES

As work progresses on the EVOL tour film, it has become apparent that there is no known audio documentation of many of the gigs other than the mic on the VHS camera the movie was shot on. That little mic got pounded. It sounds pretty darn cool, but it has been making people wonder what other tapes exist of these gigs, perhaps to replace some of the camera sound.

Tapes are being sought of the following gigs:

6/27/86 Houston - Café Mode
7/05/86 Huntington Beach - Safari Sam's
7/06/86 Portland OR - Pine street theatre
7/12/86 Denver - Duetscher Hang
7/14/86 Kansas City KS - Parody Hall
7/15/86 Minneaplois - First Ave.
7/19/86 Indianapolis - Hoosier Ballroom
7/20/86 Columbus - Stache's
7/21/86 Cleveland - Peabody's
7/23/86 Rochester - Idols

If anyone has tapes of these shows, please contact studio@sonicyouth.com. Needless to say, the earliest generation you can hunt down is the best, it would be amazing to get original cassettes or reels!

Thanks everybody.

SONIC STOLEN GUITAR RETURNED!

Thanks to the eagle eyes of British fan Gareth Hardwick who matched the serial number on an ebay auction to one of Lee's Travis Bean guitars, the first item from among all the stuff which was stolen out in Orange County CA back in July of 1999 has been returned! A fellow in the Pacific Northwest had bought the guitar from someone in Orange County CA (hey how bout that...) w/o knowing it was stolen property. SY reimbursed the fellow for what he'd spent on the guitar, and authorities in LA are currently investigating further leads that have been provided (so far with little success unfortunately).

Thanks Gareth for the tipoff! Any other SY fans who might want to try out their sleuthing skills on our behalf are directed to the page on our site that lists all the gear which was stolen, serial numbers, etc (SY.com>History>Equipment>Stolen Gear). Thanks in advance for any further help--we figure out of all that stuff SOMEthing else will surface as some point...
