SONIC MATTERS/SONIC KOLLABORATINOS AT ART METROPOLE IN TORONTO

The Sonic Matters show which so far has been seen in NYC and Australia is now up at Art Metropole in Toronto. It's the same deluge of sonic material guaranteed to overwhelm and inspire, only this time slightly tweaked to a more Canadian sensibility. For info about the space check this out. Below is the press release from Art Metropole:

Art Metropole is pleased to announce Sonic Matters, Sonic
Kollaborations, an exhibition of ephemera and printed matter either produced by, or in collaboration with, the popular New
York City musical collective, Sonic Youth. Materials exhibited include concert flyers, posters, zines, writings by band members (including Kim Gordon's project for FILE Magazine); artist
books by Lee Ranaldo, and of course record and compact disc
designs.

In addition to their own self-generated materials, Sonic Youth has a long history of collaborating with many visual artists, among them Mike Kelley, Raymond Pettibon, Gerhard Richter, James Welling, Richard Kern, Dan Graham, John Knight, Lydia Lunch, Christian Marclay, Rodney Graham, Yoko Ono and Jeff Wall. The work spans a period of approximately 20 years, from the inception of Sonic Youth to the present.

Art Metropole is pleased to present this traveling exhibition, following-up on the publication of "Letter From NYC" by Sonic Youth in the fall of 2000. It was the 20th and final issue of our highly successful Little Cockroach Press Series.

Art Metropole gratefully acknowledges the financial support of The Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council and the city of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council.

ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES POSTPONED

After much deliberation, the All Tomorrows Parties organization, along with curators Sonic Youth, have opted to postpone the dates of this event (originally Oct. 19-21 2001) to the weekend of March 15-17 2002. It will still happen at UCLA campus.

Though Sonic Youth have been severely compromised (their studio exists at "ground zero" and is, for the most part, inaccessible - some of us have been evacuated from our homes, some of us were directly under shower of the attack), the band was prepared to play ATP regardless. All involved were prepared to have the event address the crisis and to deliver proceeds in benefit. A gathering of musicians, artists and poets could only have been a positive thing.

Personal travel anxieties, a complete halt to ticket sales and a general sense of unease due to the unpredictability of the Bush/Taliban conflict are the primary factors of our decision to postpone. Additionally, a sense of responsibility towards our children at this time for an environment of stability and reflection is indeed a priority.

We apologize to the artists, their various agents, management, and personnel who invested valuable time and effort towards making this ATP a success. We can only hope to see everyone springtime 2002 under more cheerful circumstance.

NYC BENEFIT CONCERT 10/07/01

Sonic Youth, Tom Verlaine and guests have scheduled a show this coming Sunday, October 7th, 8pm at NYC's Bowery
Ballroom that will benefit the following two organizations:

1) The Asociacion Tepeyac, a not-for-profit organization that represents Mexican and other Latino immigrants in NYC According to USA Today, as of September 20th, Mexican and South American losses numbered several hundred people. They worked at Windows on the World, office cafeterias, cleaning services, and delivery companies.

The media has paid little, if any, attention to this group of innocent victims. They worked and lived in New York City and the senseless attack has left their families in despair and sorrow, just as with all the other victims. However, unlike the families of the brave firefighters and policemen who perished in the attack, many of the Mexican and South American victims families and dependents will not be receiving generous settlements from the city and few of the workers or their families possessed insurance policies.

2). The New York Women's Foundation, the only public U.S. foundation dedicated solely to low-income women and girls in NYC, has set up a special disaster relief fund for helping low-income women and girls directly affected by the WTC terrorist attack. Many of the low-wage workers in the Twin Towers were women. They were breadwinners of their families.

SONICS SAFE
WTC GOES DOWN
BLOCKS FROM ECHO CANYON

Although the sonic studio is mere blocks from the (now collapsed) World Trade Center, none of the band members were hurt in the catastrophe of 9/11. Lee and his family and Jim were in the area at the time but escaped unharmed.

The condition of the studio is unknown at this point, as the area close to the disaster remains off-limits. Hopefully later this week it will be possible to visit the building. Major damage seems unlikely; reports have said that the street sustained little damage, though an engine from one of the planes supposedly landed almost in front of our door.

Once the studio is up and running again, it is back to work on the new album and a soundtrack for a French film called Demonlover. The month of August was spent working on both of these projects, writing songs and producing collages for the film. One song from August- a no-wave rocker entitled >=Plastic Sun<= will appear on a compilation included with newsstand copies of an upcoming issue of Jane magazine. Unfortunately, due to a digital error the song appears on the CD at the wrong pitch! Look here for an MP3 of the song as it is supposed to be.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by the events of last week; we pray there is peace ahead and not further madness. We hope all of you are safe,

-sonic youth
