I dunno. The Missouri Breaks is one of my favourite westerns and he's brilliant in it. He was just miscast in The Shooting. There always has to be that slightly eccentric sense of humour with him for me but in that he plays a cold killer which just isn't him. Jack Palance, yes, but not Jack Nicholson.

Its like, all of his curmudgeon characters would be so perfect, but didn't really develop fully until The Shining and after..

I'm not sure about the curmudgeon thing. Again it's the slightly eccentric almost stoner humour that I really associate him with, so I suppose I think of his stuff from the 60s-70s like The Last Detail, Missouri Breaks, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Easy Rider, etc, as being his real peak. He is great in The Shining though, but even there, playing a psycho killer, he still manages to be laugh out loud funny. The "Here's Johnny" line?

One of the best films I have seen in a long time. Nicolas Cage, a drifter, ends up in this small town where someone mistakes him for a hitman he has hired to kill his wife. Plenty of back stabbing and double cross in this superb noir thriller.

YES! Like 30 minutes shorter please

The only Tarantino flick worth 2 and 1/2 hours was Pulp Fiction, but that is because it was essentially four short-films combined so it never felt dragged out, more like episodes.

If they really want to give Affleck a challenge make him use the classic grey and blue Batman suit, enough with the all black suit.

Cornrows tuff guy Melo or effeminate gay mustache Melo? Either way, the guy doesn't play enough defense to be Batman but that absurdity alone is what would still make it better than Ben Affleck,

Kazaam is still better than Ben Affleck, there, I said it. Even those terrible recent Buick commercials are better than Ben Affleck, though in truth, those commercials might be better with Ben Affleck than Shaq, so really, they could just switch.

Surprisingly this could work, the Rock is like Steven Seagal 2.0, he can sort of act, only is a much more likeable guy so you tolerate his mediocre talent.

Winner. Roll it!

But really now, why couldn't they just bring back Christian Bale, that dude kind of nailed it the way Michael Keaton did.

oh, i have this to watch, and i've watched part of it but it was so good i put it aside to finish on a good long lazy day (today probably), but did you find the dvd transfer as terrible as i did? the fucking thing is cakeboxed (a letterbox inside a pillarbox, in other words, they stuck a widescreen (i think it's a 1.66) inside a 4:3, then they stuck that as a widescreen dvd, so you have black bars on top and bottom and on each side, and if you try to zoom it in to eliminate one set of bars it's all pixelated.)

criterion has to get their hands on this things and reissue. yes, maybe it doesn't matter "for the story", but what i've seen so far is fucking gorgeous and deserves a lot more respect from its medium.

----

ANYWAY.

watched susan seidelman's "smithereens" which was everything that the amos poe move i mentioned the otehr day wasn't-- fun, watchable, meaningful, *in color*, etx. also, great feelies soundtrack, and richard hell is awesome in it, etc., etc.

found out through commentary track this was the first indie american movie in cannes (apparently cassavetes didn't make it? maybe it's bullshit). anyway, i expected absolute caca in the name of new york hype and it turned out to be great actually. well not a masterpiece but totally watchable and good, even if the story was a little, hm, what's the word, "geometric"? meaning, it followed a sort of predictable pattern so you soon knew where everything was going. still, good fun, well made low-budget movie, and the main character reminded me of the idea i have of some boardies ha ha ha ha.

It seems like there's a lot of conflicting information about Shadows being at Cannes. Some say it won the critics award there but to my knowledge that was at Venice. I don't think it actually showed at Cannes. I just checked the Cannes website and it isn't mentioned anywhere. I may well be wrong though.

Anyway, just watched

The Border

Strange film. The cast, theme, director, pretty much everything about this film should've made it an absolute winner. It's not bad just a bit underwhelming, in a way that no film set on the US-Mexican border in the late 70s and starring Warren Oates, Jack Nicholson and Harvey Keitel has any right to be.
