Was sick yesterday. watched this in bed, cuz I am a trek nerd. not too great but neat enough as a trek history lesson.

Then I saw this one

which was cool, like a history lesson on bond. not too awesome, but cool for a fan.

Although I'm not a Trek nerd the phenomenon does fascinate me. I'll look out for that documentary.

Through a Glass Darkly.

another Bergman classic. not as disturbing as the others i've seen, but still fantastic. i also find the women in his films to be extremely attractive or exuding something sexual. i think i'll keep 'em rolling.

any suggestions? maybe The Silence.

The Passion of Anna
The Silence
Hour of the Wolf
Wild Strawberries
Virgin Spring
Winter Light
Seventh Seal

I'd also throw in Summer Interlude, which is somewhat underrated in my opinion.

I also find that Cries and Whispers is a stirring masterpiece, depending on how you look at it. Don't expect to be in high spirits after watching the film. As with many other Bergman films, it's a bit of an agonizing experience. Despite a familiar utilization of clocks, a rare use of color (primarily the color red) dominates the film throughout. So yeah, I'd recommend it if you think that's up your alley...

I know what you mean about the 'exuding something sexual' thing and on that score I'd definitely say The Silence is a good option. There's something very kinky about that movie.

That was the first Bergman film I ever saw and yeah, while I did really like it, it made me quite weary of checking out his other films for a while. I lump it in with the likes of Salo, Breaking the Waves and Irreversible: films that I appreciate but ultimately endure, rather than enjoy. If that makes sense.

I've only seen it once but I really enjoyed Gomorrah. For every critic that thought Coppola and Scorsese glamorize the mafia in their movies, Gomarrah truly doesn't.

i'll check those out in that order. i've seen Hour of the Wolf.

anything's up my alley. esp. psychological ur..thrillers. i still haven't watched Possession for a second time because it fucked me up. badly. i just love disturbing films. i guess it started with some childhood obsession with Stephen King books/films or those fucked up horror movies i saw when i was younger like "I Spit on Your Grave" with the fucked up rape scene.

amazing to think that movies like those were found in just random video stores in the 80's and 90's. rented by fucked up drug addicted couples for a thrill.

The most recent movie I watched was called Sleep, My Love. Directed by Douglas Sirk. Starring Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, and Bob Cummings. IT FUCKING RULED.

Yeah, really good! Although it feels a lot like a showcase for some top actors to really do their stuff. The story isn't up to much and the whole thing could've probably done with losing a half hour but for a chance to see just how good Joachim Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are, it justifies itself in spades.

I love the ending when The Master tells Freddie, “If we meet again, in the next life, you will be my sworn enemy and I will show you no mercy.” Then when he sings that song it sort of elucidates the intricate relationship of power and submission between Master and Freddie. It does present this tendency in people to be subjugated to an ideology in order to find peace with themselves. And Freddie was the guy who was unable to be compliant, yet at the same time, both Master and Freddie are very much alike. Maybe Freddie's presence throughout "The Cause" brought a primal and somewhat childish side out of The Master that had been lost some time ago. A good example would be the scene where Freddie returns from prison, and they see each other for the first time since behind bars as they tackle each other to the ground, laughing while Hoffman slaps his butt. Apparently, that whole thing was not part of the script! it just happened, which kind of gives it a more authentic vibe or something.

I could go on about it, I just love how PTA makes films with heart, and doesn't really sugarcoat his work. It does challenge you a bit. I still don't fully "get" the ending where The Master sings that song and says to Freddie, "If you leave here, I don't ever want to see you again". It's mostly because both have maintained the same level of gratification. He doesn't say it out of malice. My interpretation was that Freddie's inability to be "tamed" to that ideology, as well as his effect on The Master's behavior was sort of detrimental to the whole cause. It only seems to spiral downward, especially when Master is taken to jail. It's basically a seasaw effect.

I don't know, a lot of people I've spoken to found the film disappointing. I did too the first time I saw it... but it has gotten better with each watch for me. Also, I found the acting performances and the music very moving.
