yeah it doesn't need to be a comedy but with certain subjects (e.g., grown men wearing capes) it's sometimes good to keep a twinkle in the eye and not go all-method. which reminds me how much more fun it is to watch RDJ than hearing douchebaggy christian bale scream at the crew. this also relates to another trailer i saw yesterday, and that was spiderman's-- i'm glad sad-looking tobey maguire is no longer playing peter parker. the new one seems to be more fun. anyway, CORNY ONE-LINERS? no you didn't. but it's okay. from what i could tell from the trailer, it's catwoman's job to deliver them in the new batman. re: nolan's batman, i really, REALLY liked the first one of the trilogy. it totally blew my mind. reason was that i went there expecting nothing and i got a great fucking plot and characters and all. so it was a great surprise. dark night was overhyped cuz it featured a dead man walking, and it relied a lot on "cheesy effects" (my answer to "corny one-liners" lol), and so while it was alright, it let me down a little, and it felt it was more stereotyped compared to the first one. i'm going to watch the next batman of course and i hope it's good but i'm not willing to praise it or declare winners until i watch the whole of it myself. |

Yeah I was kind of being a dick. There's no doubt that his batman flicks have their negatives as well... but then again nearly every movie I've seen does. I really think that Begins comes off better if you view them backwards... watching it as a prequel kind of. I don't find it nearly as good as the dark knight, but that's just me. There's no doubt he really changed the whole complexion with the sequel (I was the only person in the theater when I went to see Begins, not kidding) and then it was packed when I went to see Dark Knight. Huge transition there... anyways, he squeezes too much unnecessary stuff into them, I would agree with that. Both of those movies do sort of leave me with a bad taste in my mouth, merely for being too long and having too much for the amount of time it lasts. The Dark Knight is just better to me because of the pacing, better villains, a more interesting storyline, and more creative action scenes.... even if overdone at times.
In actuality, I'm not a fan of any other superheros... I just give them a chance to see what happens. Obviously, Batman seems to suit my tastes. @ #$%#^%#&&$#% |

I totally agree. It's a difficult line, though. I think it's possible to treat superheroes with a sense of humour without the whole turning into flat-out comedy (although I though it worked with Iron Man). But I equally don't like it when the whole thing gets a bit too serious, either (Watchmen). Part of why I think Keaton was such a good Batman was cos I think he got that balance just right. |

Dario Argento's Inferno was screening at the local theater here. it was nice to see it on the big screen and there were some nice scenes, but all in all i agree with I think Adam's criticism that it is a bit boring. And the plot is kind of silly.

yeah, I agree with that. It's my problem with just about every single Argento film that I've seen. Stylistically, most of them are intriguing to watch but I hardly ever care about what's going on in them... can't find much about the characters that seems interesting. I like the use of color in Inferno, great sets... but the pacing just makes it dull. I would say however he has at least 3 movies I can watch over and over again.
But all in all, majority of his work consists of potential masterpieces that just don't live up to it, in my honest opinion. |

Now that I've thought about it, I'd really like to see Ariel Rebel in a feature film or two. What a babe.

yeah i agree with that. i really like tenebre and profondo rosso as well as the bird with the chrystal plumage, suspiria is a beautiful film, but does drag on a bit. the bird also has a pretty good plot from what i remember. as i mentioned in a post aa few years ago, my problem with tenebre was the sound, the dialogue was super quiet and the music and effects really loud. and the edition of deep red that i saw was like half italian and half english and thus super annoying. but i still really like him as a director. i want to see opera.

I also agree. I've never liked any of his films completely. The closest I've got is probably with Suspiria and Deep Red. I dunno, he seems so preoccupied with style that, as murmur says, they tend to be quite dull in patches; as though the narrative's only real function is as a means of connecting a string of different set-pieces.
A bit of trivia about Inferno you may already know is that the film's underwater room scene (probably its most memorable) was actually done by Mario Bava, on Argento's request. |

I'm sure I read somewhere that she's meant to be quite a fucked up individual. She seems to have been marginalised even within the Adult industry so I doubt if the mainstream would want to touch her. I think with a lot of them, their lifestyle and attitude is more of a hindrance to them progressing their career than their association with porn. There are a few I've seen where I've thought they could work well in the mainstream, then the stories come out about their fucked up personalities, drug excesses, etc. Not saying none of those occur in mainstream Hollywood, obviously, but I suppose it has enough problems of its own to deal with without having to cope with a lot of the human wreckage that gravitates towards the porn industry. I still think some would be perfectly suited though, with no obvious lifestyle or attitude issues to get in the way. Although for the large part, I think they're the older ones who've seen a bit more, done a bit more and had time to come out the other end. (Nina Hartley, Evan Stone, TJ Hart, Ron Jeremy, Julia Ann, etc). The problem there, especially for the female performers, is that, if anything, due to the popularity of the whole MILF genre, there are probably more casting opportunities for them in porn right now than there is in the mainstream (which seems to largely forget women once they hit 40). I'm sure Shannon Tweed would make an absolute fortune if she signed with Vivid. |

I picked up a documentary called man on wire and sergio leone's good bad and the ugly at a bookstore for pretty cheap earlier so I guess I'll be watching them later.
The underwater scene is the only one I remember from Inferno... well, actually I also remember a scene where the killer tortures cats or something which was quite disturbing to watch. (this does happen in Inferno right? I might be thinking of a different one because it's been a long time since I've seen it) |
