Grosse Pointe Blank. It was alright. John Cusack was good.

Independence Day (7/10)

As indefensible as it is, I do really like this film.

And who could forget when Lisa tells Gary's family about his constant masturbation in the washroom. "YOU TOLD ME YOU WERE COMBING YOUR HAIR!!!!!" "MOM!!!!! I WAS!!!!!!!"

A feel good Hughes classic.

In all these years I never knew that was a John Hughes film.

The Big Lebowski

one of my favorites. I remember the first time I saw it expecting it to be one of the weakest by the coen brothers. Without a doubt their funniest.. John Goodman is great as usual, and buscemi dies in a coen bros. film as usual.. was also surprised to see philip seymour hoffman in this too. I usually don't pay too much attention to actors in the films I watch but it was hard not to for this one. Their best still might be Barton Fink though...

"Sword of the Beast" Who knew there was such a plethora of samurai pictures in the 1960's? This one from director Hideo Gosha, whom I've never seen anything else from yet this was quite good. Perhaps not on the level of the best films from Kurosawa but its great to discover other directors making samurai pictures as well nearly the same time he was making his best stuff, and making good ones.

Fanny and Alexander is the shit. Persona is great but too fucking psychoanalytical and tortured for me to watch repeatedly. I prefer Bibi Anderson in Wild Strawberries. Yes, yes, I prefer a happy fucky muse than a tormented nurse. If you liked the tortured stuff look at his early early films, everyone suffering like a Russian novel. Shit like "Crisis" or "Torment" (he only did the screenplay). ANyway Winter Light is about some poor tortured fuck again, but the cinematography is the eye cum. Sven Nykvist was a fucking genius. Well he shot Persona too, which is why the cinematography is better than the story here. God damn his pictures are incredible. Winter Light was before Persona.

DO NOT watch scenes from a marriage until you've been living with someone for a while. The way the 70s were retarded is hilarious.

But Fanny and Alexander I cannot recommend enough. The long (TV) version if you can find it (Criterion has it).

It's great. Bergman's only horror film, as far as I know. It has a unique, rather surreal mood that I love. Overall not one of his best films perhaps, but it's worth seeing.

My favorites by Bergman are the TV version of Fanny and Alexander, Cries and Whispers, Persona and Through a Glass Darkly.

thanks. Sven Nykvist was great.. Woody Allen ended up getting him to work on some of his films. Crimes and Misdemeanors is the only one that comes to mind right now. I personally found Persona to be farely easy to follow. It is psychoanalytical but I tend to enjoy those kind of things.. I loved how the dialogue was repeated at the end... both times showing the face of each character. Also love those images at the very beginning.

DanielCarlson: thanks. It sounds like something I want to see. I usually prefer films that have a bizarre/surreal atmosphere.

haha.. jim carrey hasn't been in a good movie in a long time has he? Dumb and Dumber is one of my favorites. Apparently him and jeff daniels will be reprising their roles for a sequel to it. Can't say I'm too crazy about all the remakes and sequels that are released... but I am kind of interested at least to see how it turns out.

Big Lebowski is one of those movies that EVERYONE seems to like, but I just don't get what's so great about it. Another one like that is Super Troopers. People swear that movie is funny, but I don't see it. Same with The Hangover. And how come people think The Crow is a good movie? Or Inception? Or Dogma?

link failed.. that first poster was for 1989 batman..

anyways, I'm the opposite. I don't know how someone can dislike Inception! The guy spent numerous years of his life writing something that in my mind was very creative (satoshi kon's paprika is what comes to mind when I think of similarities, which nolan openly admitted he was inspired by it). He worked on the idea since he was sixteen... and it's one of the most inventive films to come out in the mainstream (I know.. this is part of why it was overrated) but still... that part with the mirrors... all the streets folding over, and how thought provoking the film was in general really caught my attention. I easily consider Nolan one of the best directors we have at the moment. To each his own though. Big Lebowski entertained me. It is similar to Fargo... as all hell breaks loose throughout the whole film. No doubt though that Fargo is the better film. I'd like to rate every coen bros film I've seen sometime.. I'll have to think about it.

Hellraiser 7/10

the trailer is a lot better than the film itself. I did like that scene where the man pushing the mattress sort of.. imitated the woman sleeping with frank. I found it very hard to care much about any of the characters. There was no depth to any of them at all. The reasons for what every character does in this film seemed very silly to me. Though, for some reason I can't help but say I enjoyed it to some extent. Also, I find it strange that "Pinhead" is the only character I've seen on the posters for the film, the one that gets mentioned the most, and yet I only remember seeing him in (at best) 4 scenes which weren't very long. ha..
