Its rare when I get a solid nights sleep. Partly why i'm always so grumpy.
Last night I woke up around 1:30 wondering why I was awake. Then I realized I was hearing the sound of a women sobbing from next door, she was by the window so i could hear clearly. I found this more disturbing than the usual noises that wake me up - men and women fucking, men and men fucking, feral cats fucking, the cokehead frat boys a couple doors down, restaurant exhaust motors, fire alarms, CON Ed releasing masses of steam, restaurant workers yapping, etc etc. I don't know what was up but she would stop and then just as I was about to go under start up again, finally I turned on the fan and put in earplugs and was able to get another 4 hours before I got up at 6.

they say those who grow up in big cities find the stillness and quiet of the countryside at night makes it impossible for them to sleep.

man, when I go camping, I am astonished at how I close my eyes and wake up 9 hours later without interruption.

What floor are you on / how high up from the street?
My two best tricks for sound sleeping during the day: 1) a noisy fan 2) hang / thumbtack a blanket over your window......besides muffling sounds, the blanket keeps the room cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter! |

My grandparents' farm out in Wisconsin, in the summertime with the crickets chirping, was loud compared to NYC.
I once lived near (but not too near) a subway station, and the screeching of the brakes, followed by the opening of the doors, followed by the closing of the doors, followed by the WHUMP!!! of the train getting back underway and then slowly crescendoing back up to full speed was downright musical and relaxing. ![]()

Me and my crew once went camping and the goddamn sound of crickets and cicadas was so fucking LOUD! Louder than anything I have ever had to deal with in the city. Took a whole lot of smokin to go to sleep.

i know new york is the greatest city in the world, but without sufficient funding it can be hell.
have you considered moving out of there? how about long island? or poughkeepsie? (ha! that name cracks me up every time!). but seriously. what's keeping you there? sleeplessness is the horror. ps- this here is a white noise machine ![]() in my experience, works way better than a fan. |

LIving in the East Village - as intolerable as it has become - is very convenient to get to work and pretty much any place I need to be, and I have a rent stabilized apt - paying nearly $1300 a month is no treat but I wouldn't pay much less in the boroughs and my fear is I'd find myself in a different but similar situation - when I was living uptown in Wash Heights the coke dealers would hang outside our building all night hooting. I once saw a gang of about 30 beat the shit out of some guy and then wave a red flag at the cops, the cops just sat there while the gangbangers did their shit.

damn! i'm in santa fe right now and it's quiet--- and gorgeous. $1.3K/month would probably get you a nice adobe house in the middle of an acre of land.
okay this one is in the middle of the city (so it's "smaller" but probably huge for NY), but look: http://santafe.craigslist.org/apa/3802908463.html |

I remember staying in NYC. Holy fuck that was a noisey morning. It felt like I heard a truck backing up for about 3 hours.

Its toned down in the past 15 years, but only because the copz are so loc'd up! Quote:

dude, NYC to Sante Fe? Seriously? Its a really lovely town, I've enjoyed it before and would love to visit again, but you can't leave the cultural meccas of cities like NYC and LA and then bunker a relatively small town. What will people eat? Where will they find art, culture, and other hipster snobbish shit to do on weeknights? Where will they find good coffee are get stupid tattoos? NYC, I admire that so many of you are courageous enough as myself to abandon the self-destroying car, but LA is the shit. You should all just move here, wait, never mind, just stay the fuck where you are I'm sure you dig it anyway

for a small town it's pretty fucking great. large numbers of obscenely rich old people have made this the 2nd largest art market in the US after new york. take that, san francisco. Quote:

LA is a horrendous shithole-- you can keep your gangs, and you paramilitary cops, and your horrible freeways and endless sprawl, and your scientologists, and you millions upon millions of wannabe actors who make for the shittiests waitstaff in the universe, and your crummy "celebrity" culture, and your plastic surgery epidemic. LA is everything that's wrong with america. the beach is okay though. i'd rather be cramped in new york than be trapped in a crappy LA freeway. how dare you compare LA to new york? i only offered santa fe as a cure to tesla's sleep problems--but LA? no. sorry. |

this kinda masks all the frequencies over music. plus, if you're listening to béla bartok, it might keep you awake all night. then again yes you could make a looping playlist of a soundwave. but you know, in that perpetual contest of analog vs digital, i've found these more pleasant than the digitally generated sounds you can get. actually, pink/brown noise is less shrill to my ear than white noise proper. but these little machines do the job better. and they are portable. not that i need one, these days. it's so quiet here that i get up in the morning and there are rabbits and deer out my window... breakfast, so close! |

While the gangs do kind of saturate everything, my bias is I more or less like most of em, people are people if they keep their violence and drama to themselves. As to the actors, that is only in the small pocket of the Mid-Wilshire area and parts of the Valley around Universal City, other than that the "everybody is an actor in LA" is a myth. Celebrity culture too. That is only what we export on TMZ, that "celebrity" culture is condensed to a few square blocks of clubs and restaurants, the rest of the 400 odd square miles are utterly celebrity free. The version of LA on TV is everything that is wrong with America, the version that most of us Angelinos live is everything that is right. You have to be careful, LA is like anywhere else, and parts are cliche of themselves, but if you are "local" you know all the gems. The thing about LA is its vast. You can travel a hundred miles in a day to enjoy the best we have to offer. Quote:
That she is, an epically under-appreciated. I work literally less than 1 mile from the beach, and go there only about once a month :/ Quote:
You obviously had the wrong experience of LA, but we food, culture, and class if you avoid all the cliched and TV versions of the place. Next time you visit I'll give you the real tour Besides, we have everything New York has and yet the mountains, hills, green spaces, and actually enjoyable ocean that they are lacking, and I KNOW a cat like you digs hiking and natural space.
