My patience is low. But...I don't have many options now.....

So...all that's left is to distract myself.....and the last volume of Oyasumi punpun is out but still needs to be translated.....and....I found this cap....and it is scaring the fuck out of me and kind of making me freak out. Because it looks like it is going to be seriuosly heartbreaking(well.....just about all of this guy's works are).

What is crazy is that coke is not physically addicting, it acts on the dopamine receptors which is a powerful force of the human brain, but not necessarily addicting. There are not physical changes in the chemistry of the brain which create dependence, the habit is entirely psychological, entirely based on their intense desire for the drug, but not a craving. This is insane because simply put, like Tupac said, "Have you ever seen a crackhead now that's eternal fire."

Yes, cocaine also causes inherent brain damage because of its effect on the vascular system in the brain creating dead zones of brain matter of extended abuse. Very few drugs aside from alcohol and meth have this measurable effect on the brain, for example psychedelic mushrooms and peyote have no measurably negative impact on the structure of brain, even after 1000s of ingested doses! It is also bizarre because nicotine also acts on the dopamine receptors in a similar way and yet nicotine is considered one if the most addictive chemicals in nature (based on its potency ratios, it takes such an insignificant amount to be psychoactive, really only LSD is more potent)

To keep depression at bay, St John's Wort is a nice leveler (though it takes a while to kick in). I've recently been playing with amino acids, like l-tyrosine, which is a precursor to dopamine. L-lysine works on serotonin, as does l-tryptophan. Shit works. This is usually my absolutely least favorite, most miserable time of year, and yet I've been feeling slightly peachy lately.

Seriously, EvolG, why not take a trip to the local Vitamin Shoppe or whatever? Fuck with your chemistry til you get it right. Might as well, is what I say.

And yeah, coke sucks. Works for a half hour, then you feel like shit til you do more. Evil.

Too keep depression away you have to exercise, regularly. Herbs and plants are cool, as supplements, but unless we're talking straight up about smoking pot then such are really only partial measures. Exercise and diet will help balance the neurochemistry which gets out of whack during depressive episodes, physical exercise helps balance the imbalances, albeit it temporarily. Depression is an inward battle, it really can't be won with outside substances, it must be conquered within. A person must accept that, "This is my brain, as is." Its your brain, either deal with it, or suffer, but very rarely do outside chemicals, plant or pharmacological or otherwise, tend to help. Cannabis helps alleviate the symptoms of depression, but really doesn't address the underlying chemical imbalances. "Anti-depressants" try to achieve this, but with very limited success, especially considering how many hundreds of millions of prescriptions are out there in the world, and how clearly there aren't hundreds of millions of "cured" people

i keep hearing this bullshit of "chemical imbalances" but i'm firmly convinced that's a symptom and not a cause. for me it's a bit like calling cholera a "shit imbalance" when what you have is a fucking infection.

and yes i am no researcher but having lived with this curse since at least the age of 13 i can say pretty confidently (some might say cockily) that depression is a disease of thought, not of pure "chemistry".

sure, a certain type of brain chemistry might make you more prone to depression just like some people bruise easier or have more brittle bones, but one thing is to be sensitive or easily tired and another is to want to kill one's self. it's a huge step and i am not convinced the leap is altogether "natural."

in other words, a low threshold for pain is one thing, terminal self-loathing is another.

i used to get "seasonal depression" come winter (it's pretty fucking common, omega 3 helps a bit), but now that i am living like a caveman all i do is sleep more, even nap during the day. i am not "sad" and i don't want to kill myself, but if i was forced to undersleep by alarms and electric lights and assholes and other shit i'd be so stressed out it would probably start to look like a solution. sleep is great.

anyway, #1 cure for any disease is be kind to yourself no matter what. and by "kind" i don't mean self-indulgent-i'm-gonna-burn-some-money-today but kind like you'd be with your favorite dog or your best friend. and stop asking yourself that you "should be" like this or like that. you are what you are. learn to enjoy it. if you need to sleep 10 hours, do. so this is like what suchfriends said about your brain but a little extra-- learn to be your best friend and the rest follows.

exercise, good diet, and sleep of course help a lot (especially sleep), but avoiding assholes is much more crucial i think-- cast the assholes away from your life, especially the ones who are actively trying to pressure you to be someone else, which will make you fucking MISERABLE. there is no need for all that.

okay. over & out.

--

ps i tried sn johns warty drops some time ago but they did make my eyes burn-- oversensitivity to light, it seems.

I actually agree with this completely but with the caveat that I believe the source of each individual human being is their inward soul, which determines subsequent biochemistry and not the other way around. So when we see "chemical imbalances" I agree with you that this is a symptom and not an overt cause of depression HOWEVER my bias is that I believe such experiences are caused by spiritual wounds to the soul.

Quote:

Also agreed, but if you can keep the chemicals more in balance it makes healing the inward wounds of the mind/soul much easier. Sort of like trying to put out a raging fire while people are still pouring on the gasoline. You have to stop throwing the gasoline to even remotely start to put out the core fire burning within. If the mind/soul is wounded, then the more crippling symptoms caused by the chemical overloads must also be addressed. I don't think "anti-depressants" do a good job of this, diet and exercise have more proven results. The underlying depression is not eradicated, but it makes it easier to deal with..

Is suicide chemical in nature or does it prove your point more so that depression is caused by something more substantial then chemistry?

Quote:

Agree. I think the causes of depression are internal, psychological, or more correctly spiritual, including a self-loathing to the point of suicidal thoughts. When ones are overcome by these thought processes, it leaks into the brain chemistry resulting in exaggerated symptoms of mood and feeling.

Quote:
exercise, good diet, and sleep of course help a lot (especially sleep),

That is the magic bullet if you ask me. Exercise helps drain out excess chemicals in the body and brain, and also is a kind of meditation which helps people find balance and inward harmony. Eating right is crucial, what you put in your body effects what happens to your brain. Too much sugar or caffeine? Overload. Even things like too many animal fats and hormones from meat and dairy? Overload. Vegan cleansing is a crucial step to help get the diet on the right track, followed by a more balanced approach to eating. Sadly people often put worse things in their body than they would say in the gas tank of their car!!

Also, in all honesty, I can't recommend pot enough for those people also following a more holistic approach (i.e diet and exercise) because it helps alleviate the worst symptoms while generally making people "feel good". In fact, this is the NUMBER ONE reason doctors legitimately prescribe cannabis for terminal patients, it is a safer "anti-depressant" in these instances, having more benefits with less risk and pharmacological draw backs. However, people can't abuse cannabis as some kind of magical salve or cure all, hardly the case. It will not "cure" depression, just alleviate the symptoms to allow for a "clear head" to sort out the more difficult inward problems which are the underlying causes. Sort of like why therapists in Switzerland use MMDA as a therapeutic tool, in the right conditions it helps people, but only through alleviating symptoms. Of course, MMDA is NOTORIOUS for aggravating symptoms as well so its a hard balance. I think "anti-depressants" carry this same risk as a key side-effect warning is ironically, "Anti-depressants may increase thoughts of suicide in some patients." FUCKING SHIT!!

Nature fucks up constantly, so why is it so hard to believe someone's hormone levels are off, or the connection between certain neurons are weak?

But yes, given this condition, one does develop destructive thought patterns. So even if the chemicals get all straightened out, one still needs a miracle worker to untangle the many brain knots that have developed.

And I think ingesting chemicals to correct nature's fuck-up counts as a way for a depressive to be kind to themselves.

Yes. For normal people. For normal people, exercise, sleep and food keeps the body balanced. Good for them. Lots of normal people who are a tad sad would be better off if they ate and slept well, and moved around a little.

But for people suffering what is unquestionably a medical condition, this ain't no cure.

That said, a good breakfast has a better chance of kicking off a tolerable day than a gallon of coffee.

.

Nothing is a cure, but we're talking about reducing the aggravating symptoms of depression, there are not cure-alls to speak of. People suffering from depression or anxiety need to exercise and eat right ALL THE MORE to alleviate their symptoms. Simply put, whatever the cause of the chemical imbalances, only good exercise and diet will help to "flush out" the neurochemical overloads.
