Martin, there's a discussion of built in mics on "ts.com" at

http://taperssection.com/index.php?t...175#msg1983175

I weigh in for the pcmd1, but that's pretty high euros.

I think hipsterbebopjunkie is getting some nice sets off his sony m10

Thanks for the link!

I disagree completely with Acidjack's
"But if you intend to record amplified rock, these internal mics will almost certainly distort."
That's certainly not my experience.

That said, good mics + bb trump internals every time, but for some people budget and convenience are more important. I'd love to be able to buy the kind of kit acidjack and nyctaper run, but I don't have $1000+ lying around. And even if I did, buying taping gear wouldn't be my first consideration - I'm Dutch, so naturally I'd spend it all on hookers and blow.

the "ts" folks are all about the "more complicated your gear, the more important you are in the process" thus there are zillions of dollars being used recording simple singer/songwriter stuff and jam bands.
I've had good luck with the d50 internal mics, as does Weasel Walter, if he's still posting stuff out there.....and I think your and hbj's work with the r9 and m10 are just wonderful. I certainly can see the idea of setting up quickly and forgetting your gear to be able to listen to the show without worrying about wires and batteries. The main reason I don't use the d50 internals more is that I can't set the unit down most scuzzy places I go to and not get it stolen.

I've been thinking of getting the R-09 "micskeeter" modification that's mentioned in the thread for ages now, just never gotten the money put aside for it. I emailed Church Audio a few months ago about the price and it was $129 which is about the same price as a whole new recorder at this point really but the CA-11 mics are pretty good sounding.

I have to hold the R-09 while taping in most places I go to, any place I can set them down is usually way over to the side of the venues or just covered up by loads of people standing around it which ruins the sound. I once held the unit for a full 3 hours while taping GY!BE.

Stu, any chance of reuploading http://tapewormstu.blogspot.co.uk/20...e-two-day.html ? Just the 2012-09-22 T+Mats set. I couldn't get the file to work when I downloaded it and now I want a second chance.

Source: Edirol R-09 inbuilt mics @ 96khz/24bit (Low cut off, Low gain setting > FLAC 44khz/16bit
Location: Standing to right of stage, approx ~10ft from PA.

Total Running time: 40mins 23secs [216mb]

03 [07:15]

Notes:
First ever (and most likely only ever) performance by the legendary Fushitsusha in Ireland. This recording is sadly incomplete as the batterys in my recorder died (recording 96/24 kills battery life) and I did not have replacements. Normally 40 mins of recording would be enough to capture the whole of a set but since this is Fushitsusha it's only about 1/3 of the whole set. There was a problem with Hainos guitar for about the next 20 minutes after the end of this recording which ended with Haino attempting to kick the sound assistant for the band.

As always, this is best listened to on headphones and try not to disseminate in MP3 but I can't stop you if you do.

Apologies for not being able to record nost of the set, I could have sworn the batteries were charged for the recorder.. Only the third time it's ever happened to me in many years of recording and it had to happen during the one band I'll probably never see again!

Untitled tracks (_) are hilarious rants/song intros by Warren, and are also the source of the alternate song titles. Holy shit this was an awesome show. My whoops and hollers are the loudest on the recording, it was impossible not to expell these sounds from my body during the show.

Do not sell, freely trade, buy band's records, CDs, merchandise, tip your waitress

iPhone 3s->FiRe app->Audacity->flac

As before, I can't get my bittorrent to work properly, so others can put this up on Dime if they wish...

Sure, skepticism is warrented in this case, but it sounds better than you might think. The key is the FiRe 2 app, developed by Audiophile Engineering (http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/fire/), pointed out to me by hipster_bebop_junkie. I tried to record and post some shows before I got the app and they are unlistenable. With the app, it's not as good as a good recorder, but damn good for what it is. Other folks around here seemed to like my Lee Ranaldo recording last spring....

here is an mp3 of Everything Is Fucked:

http://wtrns.fr/TVWZRSAE2ygJuWy

Can't swing a better recorder or microphones right now, need more cash flow for such items, but making do with what I have and getting results as good as this has been making me pretty happy lately.

I have hirsute_biped's Ranaldo and Dick Dale recordings - don't except Schoeps > Sound Devices quality, but as far as "built-in mics > solid state recorder" recordings go they're very good, and both get frequent plays at Casa Rappard.

Wow, thanks man, I've really enjoyed a lot of the things you have shared over the years. I hope you like this one, it might be the best so far. I have some more shows coming up this month I'm VERY excited about...

No it was actually on the R-09. There's actually a secret menu on the R-09 that allows you to change the settings to record up to 96/24 as well as a bunch of other excellent modifications (no more recording light, one touch recording, gain adjustment on each microphone, file name changes and more). The details can be found here:
