An interesting piece:

It's Official: Clinton's Popular Vote Win Came Entirely From California

The Electoral College was created PRECISELY with this eventuality in mind, to ensure that one large state doesn't become the dog with the rest of the country being the tail. It's an important counter to any potential tyranny of the majority, as is the equal representation of the states in the Senate, as well as an important part of maintainng a Federal Republic as opposed to a Unitary state.

yes

funny thing about said forever/ perfection though: the electoral college wasn't fixed into its current form until the 12th amendment was ratified in 1804

so it could still be modified in the future as needs change

i don't think it should go away though. this is a big country and states still matter.

from alleged zeocon dupes snopes.com: "It's true that if California's vote totals were entirely removed from the equation then Hillary Clinton would lose her popular vote lead, but the logic of that assessment is somewhat flawed. One could, for example, arbitrarily remove the states of New York and Massachusetts from the vote count, docking Clinton roughly 2.6 million votes (and wiping out her popular vote win). Or one could similarly claim that Trump's electoral vote victory "came entirely from Texas," since if Clinton had taken the Lone Star state (and its 38 electoral votes), she would also have won the overall election."

the electoral college may only be one of several issues at play e.g., redistricting, winner take all, lost votes (e.g., Michigan, wtf?), etc.

Correct, but, as the article I linked to shows, California was the clear statistical anomaly, with a grossly disproportionate share of the popular vote going to Clinton, as opposed to her share in the rest of the country.

is it out of whack to the normal dem/rep of the state? i always remembered it was around 60/40, depending on the area. Obama won by 60%.

even without the ~3 million popular votes, that brings them even, and that is not the definition of a landslide - I find that trump claim to be bogus.
