Sanjo for Komungo

These two cassettes were found in the back room of a major Korean bookstore in New York in 1987. They were remaindered, and the shopkeeper assured me they would never be re-ordered. Further searching has revealed that the two musicians appear on other existing recordings, but these two are out of print.

Sanjo is the epitome of a "theme and variations" form. A melody is subjected to an amazing number of variations over the course of several movements. These movements are defined by their changdan (rhythmic phrase). Up to twelve changdan may be used, but four to six are more common. A single performance may last anywhere from 8 minutes to one hour. Sanjo began as a folk music form, but moved into the realm of royal patronage in the mid-19th century.
The instruments include:
taegum, a large transverse flute with a metal membrane near the mouthpiece. A skillful player can make it sound almost like a brass instrument.
changgo is the standard percussion instrument. It has two heads, and is played with a thin stick in one hand and a heavy beater in the other. The performers on the Taegum Sanjo are Lee Seng-kang on taegum, accompanied by Lee Song-jin on changgo. The komingo player on the Komungo Sanjo is Shin Kwe-dong. The recordings were made in 1984

Ok, I've promised a few months ago I would upload something by Intik, and I guess it's still time to keep my promise... Here are three tracks (not a lot, I know, but still something):

Intik - Il était une fois l'Algérie
http://www.yousendit.com/download/25mCt96cwLh5TA%3D%3D

Intik - L'exilé
http://www.yousendit.com/download/25lyWo4v4oB5TA%3D%3D

Intik - Liberté
http://www.yousendit.com/download/25lyWqlJUTl5TA%3D%3D

As I wrote, all the members of Intik grew up in Algeria but I believe they relocated to France a few years ago. I did not remember this, but they actually also have a lot of reggae-influenced songs (which I don't really like). The first song ("Once upon a time in Algeria"), if you need to know, tells the story of all the unexplained political assssinations since the independence of the country.

Puts loads of bands to shame.
Functions of Gamelan
Gamelan is a way of linking individuals in social groups. Gamelan music is performed as a group effort, and so there is no place for an individual showoff. Traditionally, gamelan is only played at certain occasions such as ritual ceremonies, special community celebrations, shadow puppet shows, and for the royal family. Gamelan is also used to accompany dances in court, temple, and village rituals. Besides providing music for social functional ceremonies, gamelan also provides a livelihood for many professional musicians, and for specialized craftsmen who manufacture gamelan.
Today, although gamelan music is still used for ritual ceremonies and the royal family, it is also performed as concert music at social and cultural gatherings to welcome guests and audiences. Gamelan is also used to accompany many kinds of both traditional and modern dances, drama, theatrical and puppetry. In modern days, gamelan can be kept in places such as courts, temples, museums, schools, or even private homes.
