I changed my answer. I think all movies should be remade. And then they should remake the remakes, too. I mean, why not? The original film will still exist.

I like that notion.

Lars Von Trier was rumored to have challenged Scorsese to re-make "Taxi Driver" as a collab between the two directors. My initial reaction was, "Fuck that!", but after pondering, it would actually have potential to be really fucking cool. Jeremy Renner as Travis Bickle, I could totally see that working. And damn, maybe working with Lars would get Scorsese to start making fucked up movies again.

That'd be such a bizarre mix. I'd dig it!

And yeah, Scorsese... Shutter Island... Shitter Shitland.. horrible film.

fuck that. remakes sux, and remakes of good to great films SUX indubitably.

I think remakes should only be made if the original failed.

anyon remaking soemthing like Taxi Driver is just plain stupid or greedy

really though, I have spent the past minutes trying to think of a movie, ANY Movie, that was a remake that was as good or better than the original.

Let's see

Psycho (hitchcock) > Psycho (Van Sant)

La Femme Nikita > Point of No Return

Halloween (old) > Halloween (new)

Seven Samurai > Magnificent Seven

Bad News Bears (Matthau) > Bad News Bears (Billy Bob)

Clash of The Titans (stop motion) > Clash of the Titans (CGI)

I am not sayinga remake cannot be as good as the original, but that is rare. I am sure there are remakes better than the original but probably because the "original" was made in the 30's or 40's.

I'm surprised they haven't tried to remake Rocky yet, or Dirty Harry. They already tried to remake the Godfather I & II by making III. Million Dollar Baby is off limits and Casablanca

I think it is funny that no one has ever remade Deathwish.

Maybe there is no modern day Bronson!

Remakes of mute movies are worthwhile, I think. (anyone watched a mute version of Hamlet??)

Jay: Welcome to "Coming Attractions". I'm your host, Jay Sherman, thank you. Tonight, we review an aging Charles Bronson in "Death Wish 9".
Bronson: [in a hospital bed] I wish I was dead. Oy!

Ted & Bill Excellent Adventure seems ripe for a remake or Sean Penn's Bad Boys

Maltese Falcon
Wizard of OZ
The Thing (obvious choice)
I'm sure someone out there prefers Klaus Kinski's Nosferatu to the original.
There are like five zillion versions of the Three Godfathers story, some probably better than the original.
Throne of Blood
3:10 to Yuma

And uh, that's all I can think of. There are a ton of versions of A Star Is Born, but I haven't seen any of them.

Literally at the top of my head:
Scarface
The Fly
The Blob
Hills Have Eyes (until the last 15 mins)
Dangerous Liasons
Little Shop of Horrors
Insomnia (the Pacino/Nolan one; remake of a great film but still being really good, not better though)
The Thing
Ransom
12 Monkeys (a good version of La Jaettee)
The Departed
Ocean's 11
Heat (!!!!!!!!!!!! this is L.A. Takedown, everyone)
Man Who Knew Too Much
Vanilla Sky
Cape FEar
Fatal Attraction
Funny Games
The Ring (which I don't like, but it's leagues better than Ringu!)
Fistful of Dollars (Yojimbo!)

Controversial, but I'd say Payback might be a little better than Point Blank...

I think Night of the Living Dead -- Savini's -- is better than Romero's.

I'm sure there's tons if I think about em for a few minutes. Looks like quite a few good remakes...

I'd say Cape Fear is a pretty controversial choice.

I love this notion. I hate the idea that whatever becomes released will obtain centre stage and have a hand at forming mainstream consciousness and changing the way that people view whatever the original filmmaker had in mind, but there is always room for people to dig a little deeper and investigate what is before them. Sometimes when I watch absolute shit that was "inspired by" who anyone would call classic, that is when I can truly define what it is that the hack is trying to accomplish. It's apart of history. It has a part.
Besides, some of the most awesome creations come from unexpected fuckups. I wish I had some examples, but I'm pretty bad at that sort of thing.
Sigh, I probably had more to ramble about, but I doubt I'd get to my point if I continued. Pie season is a'comin.
