I've never heard a Fender Scorpio but I could listen to one of these things all day long:

Marshall JMP 50 Plexi

But yeah, from what I've read, and comparisons I've heard, that classic Marshall tone (and current Marshalls' lack of it) has pretty much kept boutique amp builders in business for over a decade.

My only experience with a Fender amp was a Hot Rod Deluxe which I have to admit I thought was awful, but I've never tried any of their reissues. I'd love to try a Bassman but I suspect it'd highlight everything shit about my already shit playing. Fenders are very unforgiving amps. A Fender twin and a Telecaster is the guitar player's equivalent of a grand inguisition. Hi Gain is great cos it covers up all my mistakes.

Yeah see, that's precisely it. My style relies on tone more than vibe, and it's very minimalistic...I do lots of chords/rhyhtm playing/jazzy chords...walkin basslines...very retro/bowie'ish/lennon white album stuff...and also do lots of things where i drone the e-string and walk around the a string...

so I want everything I hit to be heard.

Satan has heard our music, I think she can vouch for what Im talkin about...maybe.

But ya, some players want a wall of sound to mask mistakes, which is cool too...by no means am I perfect...but the style of music i play mistakes sound cool I guess...its more attitude and vibe and less precision based

No no, Fender amps are beautiful...and the best.

The super reverb blackfaced is amazing too.

What do you think of the bassman? As far as a one trick pony goes (just a clean amp, no overdrive channels or overdrive) I think its the best clean tone fender amp.

i dunno, i've never played one.

demonrail....it's a bad mother:

the fender zodiac/early solid state amps have an awful reputation for sounding like shit and being unreliable cuz they were just starting to make solid states at the time. i like it though, it can be excruciatingly loud and very nasty sounding, perfect for what i do but not everyone's cup of tea. i have to kick it sometimes.

Fender amps. Nuff said. I play the 59 bassman re-issue.

But twin reverb and super reverb are great too.

Those are good if you're looking for a nice clean tone and use fuzzboxes for distortion, but I like heavier overdriven sounds a la Helmet, Deftones, and Tool. Amp distortion just sounds more organic than pedal distortion to my ears. I usually roll back my volume for cleans so that it's on the edge of breakup. To each their own, of course, but the only Fender amp I've ever thought would 100% suit me is the Super Sonic, which is like a Bassman, Vibrolux, and Prosonic all in one-and even then, I'd have to buy a seperate reverb unit because the only way it comes with reverb is the 1x12 combo.

I like the AVT because while its clean isn't really all that good, its overdrive sounds heavy without sounding too "metal" or "big rock" and cleans up nicely when you turn down the guitar.

where's the OP? .... funny. we scarred him/her off?

Marshall's are a'ight for nitch sounds, but they are overall VERY sterile sounding... VERY! I've played and borrowed plenty. I borrowed a halfstack w/ a TSL head that I grew on me. Pretty nice. I enjoyed it and found some special tones, even the cleans. But it was just so sterile and soulless. I figure them good for recording, for control and articulation. but not the most pleasant in person. I've never played original h-wired stuff like the JCM 800 classics.... can't speak for them.

DDD, I've used the Boss Fender Reverb, surprisingly natural sounding from tight to wide open. You think those are cool, check out the Fender '63 Reverb Units. I picked one up for mostly post production, but for a "bassman" guy, these things are as good if not better than having the tank on-board.

As far as overdrive, If overdrive is a priority, go for low wattage. I think I read somewhere that Thurston was using Fender Super Reverbs but modded with 2x12's instead of the stock 4x10's. 2x12's by preference, while the Super Reverb is only a 40 watt'r vs. the 90-120 watt Fender 2x12 combos. He's using lower wattage to drive them easier than most 2x12's combos. I have a Hot Rod Deville w/ 4x10 which features a stages of gain/overdrive. I think they sound great. I love them much better than Marshall's overdrive. I also have an Red Knob (the Twin) with natural overdrive and the ability to blend the clean and overdrive channels..... brilliant amp.

All snobbery aside, I could enjoy playing through any amp and the challenge of finding sweet spots, I enjoy other amps..... but NOTHING sounds as musical as a Fender amp and will always be my go to. Kinda hard to explain, but the more I listen to Fender's the more pleasing they sound and infectious the sound is... the more I play through other amps, I get ear fatigue and the sound starts to irritate. ...again, going back to the whole Fender's sounding musical thing.

I recorded a mic test comparison for a friend a couple days ago. I wanted to compare an SM57 and a Groove Tubes GT-44 mic'd on an amp. I played a duo guitar thing into a looper and through my '65 Twin Reverb Reissue. Anyway, in response to the comments within, this is a Tele through a Twin Reverb. The mic comparison breaks down like this:
0:00 - 0:44 = Shure SM57
0:45 - 1:28 = GT-44
1:29 - 2:13 = Combination (even mix of both, centered)
