But I don't get her at all.

I find it really difficult to make it through even one track of hers without hitting eject and filing the album away on my 'ebay pile'

That probably says more about me than it does about her though.

I more than understand where you are coming from. I picked up, 'You Must Be Certain Of The Devil" not long after it came out in 88 and I still don't know what to think about it sometimes. I haven't purchased any proper studio albums by her since then (not counting 'The Litanies Of Satan).

One thing that I do have is, 'Plague Mass' which is a live recording. I find it fantastic. Not only does she sound great live, but I understand her approach to her brothers death from aids. Especially her take on the Law Of The Plague from Leviticus in the Old Testament:

"When any man hath an issue out of his flesh.
Because of that issue he is unclean.

Every bed whereon he lieth is unclean
and everything whereon he sitteth, unclean.

And whosoever toucheth his bed shall be unclean,
And he that sitteth whereon he sat shall be unclean."

......and so the scripture goes. Of course, the bible scripture is about dealing with a person suffering leprosy. Diamanda uses the scriptures for modern day suffers who are stricken with aids. You can hear the sadness in her voice when she sings to the listeners who she knows probably don't believe in God or Jesus:

"Where you a witness
And on that holy day
And on that bloody day

Were you there when they crucified my lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the cross?
Were you there when they dragged him to the grave?

I looked over Jordan and what did I see
coming for to carry me home
A band of Angels coming after me
Coming for to carry me home

Swing Swing

A band of Devils! calling out my name
coming for to carry me to the grave"

Her sadness for the naive listener quickly turns to anger towards GOD for allowing her brother to die. To suffer from aids. For his soul that is in eternal torments. For her own soul that very well may follow the same path because of her anger:

"Deliver me from mine enemies, O My God
Deliver me from the workers of iniquity
and save me from bloody men.
For lo, they lie in wait for my soul
The mighty are gathered against me
not for my transgressions, not for my sins, O Lord
They run and prepare themselves without my fault
Awake to help me behold"

I love her approach to this age old battle. I can't even say if it's what she truly believes......but she did a great job addressing it in, 'The Plague Mass' and 'Masque Of The Red Death Trilogy: The Divine Punishment & Saint of the Pit / You Must Be Certain of the Devil.'

David Tibet of CURRENT 93 sort of did the same thing with, 'The Great In The Small." David almost dying and seeing the angel of death. David contemplating eternity and the "many brown grains" he saw. The angel of death telling him there is Great In The Small. David soon thereafter arising from his deathbed with a inward need to have all of his work recorded as one. An album that many CURRENT fans did not like. I remember someone on the C93 message board saying something like, "if you recorded all the Beach Boys albums playing at the same time, it wouldn't sound much different." Of course, the true meaning behind the album isn't the sound, but the story that inspired it.

You sound like you know a good deal about opera. Are their any other artist in the opera world who try to sound anything close to Diamanda? That demonic possessed sound that is her trademark? If not that same sound, what about singing about the same topics: death, aids, hell, ect?

Xiu Xiu- for the past 6 months I cannot get enough xiu xiu. I have been collecting all their output on vinyl. they have cool vinyl. I have CD's as well.

Yeah, Need New Body are great but with a pretty sketchy recorded output. Live they are fantastic though.

My favorite need new body song is that "meets, hits it off, hangs out, makes friends... and is never seen again." song.

Sorry for being be the ever so annoying cunt again here, but Diamanda Galas DIDN'T just take inspiration from opera, she was classically trained as a pianist and a singer, the operatic style being one of them. To relegate all her records to a corner cluttered by the work of an opera singer obsessed with semi-satanic, end of the world themes seems to me that you haven't really listened to many of them to start with. The fact that you don't like what she does is fine and dandy, at least try to get a modicum of knowledge on the subject you're passing opinions on.

I only know one of her record actually ( I think it's Plague mass ).
Its all a capella.

Thank you for being more accurate than me about her!

Yet , if people had to know everything that a band has released to be able to talk about it , there would be very few discussion on music here , probably none about Sonic Youth.
