neurosis
morbid angel when they play slow, like in "god of emptiness" and "where the slime live"
some prurient
some lasse marhaug
some residents
some smegma
xxx maniak
wigrid
benighted in sodom

i remember being intimidated by brujeria's matando gŁeros back in the day, but they aren't all that, especially after "don quijote marihuano".

although i'm generally not that disturbed by music...generally.

I have lots of old Psychic TV on vinyl, but it was never really scarey, just weird.

they really got kind of dance-y toward the end of the 80's too. I was one of maybe 20 people that saw them in Dallas for the Towards Thee Infinite Beat tour, and again, it was weird, but nothing like seeing Ogre from Skinny Puppy disembowel himself on stage.

I think I might be jaded.

I was talking more 1981-85 era. You know, with the pounding and the screaming and the bloodletting and whatnot.
I had some friends that thought Skinny Puppy were scary in the 80s (we were teenagers), but I always thought they were funny.

Some Legendary Pink Dots stuff from the early and mid-80s is pretty unnerving.
Early Laibach used to freak me out when I was a kid, but then they turned into a comedy act and I wound up thinking all of their stuff was funny after that. I still like the early material a lot, but it's no longer "scary" to me.

The Residents' "Eskimo" and "Freakshow" LPs have some pretty freaky passages.

I'm incapable of listening to that tune without having a nice, polite, middle-class riot of dancing, so, in theory, that song sounds like my limbs gyrating manically rather than being scary. It is one of the better songs of ever though.

I'd have to side with a lot of contemporary composers on the disturbing side of things. Schnitkke, Ligeti, Lutoslawski, the Stravinsky of the Rites, Mahler when he's not being all gay and romantic, Penderecki (even later stuff - ooh). Sometimes I get that mood where Jandek does what he's meant to, but mostly I find it less interesting.

when rob instigator was but a wee lad

the first Suicidal tendencies album really weirded/disturbed/creeped me out. listening to saw your mommy and your mommy's dead, or suicidal failure at age 13 trying not to have mom or dad walk in and listen to it was nerve-wracking.

when I was 13 and first heard the Misfits, especially die die my darling and Mommny Can I Go Out And Kill Tonite?

when I was 17 and first heard Skinny Puppy, tha shit creeped me out bad. just weird weird stuff. "Make sure we're properly dead before you start, Ol' Ripbeak!"

when I was 18 and I first heard Confusion is Sex all the way through. That shit FUCKED ME UP. it literally scared me.

the first time I danced to A DAISY CHAIN FOR SATAN by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, I was like "what the fuck am I dancing to?" especially the tortured addict screams. I love that song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN0yI-ambNY

tripping acid with The Instigators and listening to Naked City.

also, the first time my man Mike Grayum showed me and played me the BRUJERIA "Machetazos" single. fuck!

so many disturbing bands and times.

Confusion is Sex... Well, it's dark, but I don't find it scary or disturbing. Why ?

I don't understand why Sparks should be in this thread at all. They're anything but scary.

Anyway, the first bands that sprung to mind were Univers Zero (the Heresie album, in particular) and the '71-'73 period of Tangerine Dream. Miles Davis' 70's material is pretty scary as well.

WTFuck?!?!?!
Here's my thoughts, courtesy of me on msn:
k-krack says:
It's like Abba meets USAISAMONSTER at a gay dance club that's playing Kraftwerk, and everyone inside is high on helium.

The first time I listened to the Butthole Surfers, it was by watching the Blind Eye Sees All video. Very disturbing.

And the Crucifucks. I know I would be worried if I saw Doc Corbin Dart suddenly start cutting his face mid song.

Definitely The Birthday party
Also early Neubauten.

I would've been scared at the Hanatarash show that involved the venue destruction with a backhoe.

Oh yes, why did I forget Francisco Lopez? I find Third Eye Foundation's 'Lions Writing The Bible' a bit whooooo, but that is probably because it was used in Chris Morris' Jam and it stuck with me. Your Diamandas and C93's should be there for obvious reasons. Philip Jeck can be rather freakish if played at night, and so can certain Merzbow stuff. In fact, I urge you to play Jeck with the lights off in your room at 2:00 am. Tell me if that doesn't make you feel a little bit queasy.
