Or maybe it's all in those chivito sandwiches.

traditionally, uruguay has been quite wealthy especially for a south american country, and wealth distribution is more equal than the usa for example. generally, it's pretty middle class.

as for nutrition, it's the abudance of healty, pastured beef that keeps them fitter than their rice-and-bean-eating competitors

(argentinians eat more chicken and thus eat more meat in total, but uruguayans eat more beef than anyone else in the world)

country names are awesome.

The USA (United States of America)
Mexico (Estados Unidos de Mexico, or United States of Mexico)
Brazil ( República Federativa do Brasil,or Federative Republic of Brazil)
Uruguay ( Republica Oriental de Uruguay or Oriental Republic of Uruguay )

Crazy names!

The only thing I can think of that explains their success is the high level of their interest in the game on a cultural level, but even that's impossible to really quantify. (Although it would obviously help explain why a country like the USA underachieves at football to the degree that it does.)

Or maybe it's all in those chivito sandwiches.

PS: So how was the Bernabeu? Did Real sign you?

Yeah a cultural level explains Jamaica's insane amount of brilliant runners.

Bernabeu was brilliant. The museum and trophy room were pretty incredible, as was actually being able to get to pitch level and sit on them oh-so-comfy manager seats. Although I did do a snigger seeing them still selling Higuain and Mourinho merc.

Glad the Bernabeu lived up to expectations and, funnily enough, I'm looking for a book like the one you recommend. I just finished rereading Calcio (also great), about Italian football, and was looking for an equivalent on Spanish football. So I'll definitely pick that up.

And for the tactics-heads here, you really do need to read this.

Re the culture explains Jamaican runners thing, of course not. There's obviously lots of factors why certain countries excel in certain sports and not in others. Why is New Zealand so good at rugby, or England at cycling? They're sporting anomalies. Sometimes it is cultural (like with Argentina and polo, Mexico with boxing or, I'd argue, football with Uruguay) sometimes it isn't. But success can itself spawn a culture. Jamaica's recent success in athletics will have undoubtedly inspired youngsters in Jamaica who prior to Usain Bolt may have never considered pursing it. And I'm sure it's lead to a greater emphasis on athletics in schools that may in the past have been more focused on cricket or football.

News just in that Tevez has been sold to Juve for £8m. A ridiculously low fee, even with all the add ons. West Ham spend £15m on Andy Carroll who isn't half the player Tevez is, never mind twice as good! Looks like a panic sale by City but at that price I'm amazed more clubs didn't come in for him. Even with all the controversy surrounding him, he has to be worth at least 15m. At the very very least.

Anyway, 2 1/2 hours till Brazil-Uruguay. Excited

my guess is tevez will do better in italy than in england for cultural reasons. for one thing argentina is the little italy of latin america and he'll be surrounded by familiar and comforting things-- even the language sounds similar (if you speak spanish with an italian accent you sound argentinian basically). kinda like balotelli who was maladapted to exist in england and i think is doing well in italy now? i mean, he ordered a life-sized statue of himself, and he's only on pair with a bunch of dead emperors--nothing to see here. anyway, while i am not sure tevez will "do just fine" i suspect he'll do better in italy.

When he's on the pitch he's everything a manager could hope for: committed; the proverbial goal machine. It's behind the scenes that he (or more likely his agent/owner) draws trouble. The only club in England where he's ever really been loved is West Ham, even when he's come back to play against us. We'd obviously never get him again but it's sad he's leaving English football altogether. Although he apparently hated living here. Mind you, he only said that after leaving London to move to Manchester (so it's perfectly understandable).

I've heard 15, 10 and now 8 million for Tevez. WHO DO I BELIEVE!?! When he wanted to he could be one of the best players in the league. Shame that, like pretty much of the rest of Man City, he seemingly didn't give a shit half the time.

And yeah I'll be looking at getting 'inverting the pyramid' soon. I've got a coupla books I want/need to read first then I'll read that.

My first confederations game tonight after missing pretty much the whole thing.

Haha. Not that I can really laugh; they're still selling Paolo DiCanio merch at Upton Park.

As an aside, I'm seriously thinking about getting a season ticket for next season, but £900!!! Even Chelsea, MU and MC are charging less than that.

Anyway. Uruguay-Brazil coming up. Absolutely no doubts about who I want to win this

I've heard 7.6 but with money saved on wages and bonuses it'll be worth about twice that to MC. Still seems cheap though.

the shit cock & balls of ESPN keep showing footage of some fucking murderer cunt instead of doing a proper pregame show. fuck their dogs and their bitch mothers. crime news, eat my shit.

so, gringo friends, if any of you is trying to watch, go to UNIVISION for some pretty good tactical analysis, footage, etc. i mean even if you don't speak the language you can see the digital chalkboards. and the game starts in 5'.

they've remarked on felipao's tactic of making the forwards foul to defend, they've pointed out the deficiencies of the uruguayan defense, and shown examples. good stuff.

Ah. Starting to think Uruguay might do it but Forlan's miss and Fred's goal may have killed it. Very bitty half.

Anyway, odd question but ...

BEEF!

I was gonna start a thread about this but you might be able to help without needing to. I'm planning on my next holiday being to somewhere in sth America but can't decide where. Any advice?

Priorities would be: A decent but manageable sized city, enough to do culturally without being just a tourist centre; not having to be overly careful safety-wise (no worse than an average European/US city), good food. Buenos Aires keeps coming up but it seems a bit too 'european' for what I'm after and, for whatever reason, Rio or Sao Paolo just doesn't appeal. And Mexico City feels like it could be a bit too much of a mindfuck. Anywhere else that might fit?
