Yeah, ok. I guess it's a difference between electronic artists performing shows and electronic artists playing DJ sets. I've seen Autechre and they crushed it. I've seen Fennesz and it was pretty goddamn transcendent.

Still, those are pretty exceptional artists. I think a lot of artists in the greater genre fail to deliver a good show, and instead just spin records, not really performing anything live.

Holy crap, for the first time *ever* an Arcade Fire album has been roasted by Pitchfork. Wow. Just... wow. Frankly I don't want to hear the thing now. I know that's lame, but AF and pitchfork have had a symbiotic relationship of making each other more famous and successful over the years, so for this site to go this ball-out on one of their albums... it kinda has to be a mother loving piece of shit, wouldn't you think?

I'm surprised Pfork gave it a bad review, but I'm not surprised it got bad reviews. I was keeping up with the singles released prior to the album and I hated them all.

It basically just sounds like Arcade Fire to me. Not very motivated Arcade Fire, but Arcade Fire nonetheless. I haven't listened to the whole thing, but it does seem like they're stuck in a funk. "Arcade Fire does ABBA" the headlines say, as though Arcade Fire hasn't been "doing ABBA" since "Mountains Beyond Mountains." Or perhaps, even since Funeral ("Haiti").

And then Relfektor, which was a good (great?) album, took the "dance" vibe to the next logical step, and pretty perfectly melded AF's arena-rock with disco and reggae. But this one (Everything Now) feels a bit like a tired re-tread of the ideas on Reflektor, without that album's rejuvenated, energetic feel. I was listening to tracks from Reflektor yesterday, and "Here Comes the Nigh Time" and "Porno" and "Supersymmetry" are some great freakin' songs, even if there are patchy parts here and there.

I just honestly think it's like this: AF has made a career out of intense anthems, and it's frankly a bit appalling to me that they kept doing more intense, bigger anthems album after album without losing all of their fan base in the process. So, now maybe they have an album that has all the grandstanding conceptual mumbo-jumbo of previous records, but goes a little easier on the hollering, triumphant and/or apocalyptic anthems and goes for a more subdued vibe without mixing it up musically enough to make up for the lack of pathos. I think it's a shock to the system to hear AF *not* belting songs to the back row, and trying to embrace ironic vocals and groove-laden tracks a bit more.
I don't think the album deserved the brutal beat down it received from Pitchfork (though again, I haven't listened to the whole thing), but I do think that the band has been coming increasingly close to plateauing in recent years, and they've overcome it with good songwriting and commercial success (The Suburbs) and a great artist-producer combination on Reflektor. But now, they've been doing the same basic thing for so goddamn long that they were bound to have a flop at some point.

That Win Butler is pretty full of his arse too.

I just learned myself! I barely remember their last album, so hopefully they've gained some inspiration from the apocalyptic political surroundings, as they did during the early Bush years.

yippie! new gy!be album! There's some more details on the label's site:
http://cstrecords.com/new-release-go...rian-towers-2/
including a preview video.

so some of these new songs will probably be known already if you've heard or seen any of the recent live shows, probably Buildings and that other new one will be on it. But also music that's inspired from that ballet they did, so I'm wondering how that will sound like. Because I was one of the lucky ones that saw it twice :-)

Someone on here was debating whether or not to go. I said "FUCKING GO!" because it seemed like the kind of thing they might mine from for an album.

Here's hoping they've still got it.

Jim o'rourke has been quietly killing it this year. There is of course the Kassel jaeger collab, but there have been a few Bitchin' steamrooms as well. Faves are 31, 32, and 35

Ok, I think I am officially looking forward to the new LCD Soundsystem album. I know most people are "over it," and too cool for it at this point, but those singles made me tingle a bit and I think the album might be a dark horse winner for the year.

ETA: "Over it" and "too cool" were stupid things to say. I feel like I de-aged myself 10 years by putting it that way, but I'm not going to edit it out because I need the shame to act as a reminder

did anyone mention yet on this thread that Lee will have a new album out soon? Never anticipated any album more than this one, for reasons you will find out when it's out there. Slightly overestimated, but yeah, very much looking forward to it

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Electric Trim has been mentioned here.

I think most people on this forum never cared for them, it's not a case that we are 'over it'. The 'I am too cool for this band' argument is not a valid one either. Remember we often used to have threads about Paris Hilton and Avril Lavigne on this board. Conversations/arguments would easily switch from them to Charlemagne Palestine with nonchalance.

Yeah, I guess you're right. I think perhaps it's more that I'm hoping for an overtly political album with dance beats and apocalyptic synths. I did get into them for a bit, later in their initial run, because I felt that some of their songs had a Suicide-esque (a gelded Suicide, sure, but still...) kind of NYC post-punk thing blown up to arena proportions going on. There was a nice arrogant "fuck you" vibe to songs like "Dance yrself Clean." But that period was pretty brief. Not too interested at this point, but I still have a suspicion that I will like the new album..

"Too cool" was a stupid thing to say. So was "over it" for that matter.
