NASA confirms that liquid water flows on Mars
It's the first direct evidence of a long-suspected theory
By Loren Grush

on September 28, 2015 11:01 am

@lorengrush

Liquid water exists on the surface of Mars during the planet's warmer seasons, according to new research published in Nature Geosciences.
This revelation comes from new spectral data gathered by NASA’s Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), a spacecraft that studies the planet from
orbit. The orbiter analyzed the chemistry of weird dark streaks that
have been known to appear and disappear seasonally on the Martian
surface. The analysis confirms that these streaks are formed by briny —
or salty — water flowing downhill on Mars.

NASA has advertised these findings as the solution to a major Mars
mystery: does the Red Planet truly have liquid water on its surface?
Researchers have known that water exists in ice form on Mars, but it's
never been confirmed if water can remain in a liquid state. The space
agency is claiming that we now have that answer.

Water is a chemical, and a very basic one at that and is to be found anywhere and everywhere we may choose to look in the galaxy.

The question is in what state? Liquid water may be very rare.. indeed even in this "recent" discovery the water is only very briefly liquid. Clearly not for a consistent enough and dependable to support life unless there are water tables which this could be evidence of..

Me?i think its much ado about nothing

you realize mars might have once supported life, yes?

if so, maybe we're looking at our future

which is not an insignificant thing

Once possibly.. now? Not likely. Mars could only be our future if Earth were to lose its magnetic field.

That colonization of Mars thing is very annoying to me.

If they want to colonize a super hostile environment, why not go to the moon: it has potentially (sic) the same temperature than earth.
also, there's lots of rocks and dust there. wooh!

or antarctica: super cold, but breathable, and barely claimed
plenty of ice and salty water.wooh!

anyway: Challenger 1986, Columbia 2003, who wants to be the next "hero" of space travel?

Climate change would turn Earth into Venus not Mars, indeed Venus atmosphere is described as "runaway Greenhouse effect"

it wouldn't irradiate the atmosphere away, only the ozone layer, which would let the UV rays kill us all

UV rays are good for the economy! more sunscreen for all! lololol. we're nature's cancer.

read the piece about underground bacteria though.

No, solar wind are a massive bombardment of charged particles, it would turn Earth into Mars if not the moon. It affects more than "just ozone"

Mars has only 40% of Earth's mass, so her core froze long ago as the radiant energy in the interior radiated away. Without a core of molten iron, there was no means to generate a magnetic field, and so the solar wind, most of which is ordinarily deflected away from a planet due to magnetic interactions, was free to blast most of the Martian atmosphere out into space. What's left of the Martian atmosphere is only what her gravitational field was able to nail down.

It is only pundits and talking heads that are pushing trips to Mars because of this news. NASA people are taking it much more chill, as evidence that liquid water exists somewhere else in our solar system.

I bet there are some awesome crystal formations associated with that water!
