Jay Z was involved in an alleged extortion plot concerning master recordings that were previously thought to be lost, TMZ reports. Producer Chauncey Mahan, who worked with Hov from 1998 to 2002, was questioned by the Los Angeles police department on Friday regarding his possession of master tapes that Jay Z's camp assumed went missing in 2002.
Mahan allegedly contacted Live Nation, the concert promotion company that is partnered with Jay Z on Roc Nation, and said he would either let the tapes go up for auction or accept $100,00 for them. After agreeing to $75,000, he went to meet Jay Z's people, who had already contacted the LAPD. Mahan was then detained for questioning by the LAPD, who took possession of the tapes while it's determined who owns them.
TMZ reports that the tapes are worth $15 to $20 million. Mahan wasn't arrested, but the Beverly Hills police department is investigating him for extortion, while Jay Z's people have filed a grand larceny complaint with the NYPD.

uh so I think the thing to really take out of this is - maybe we'll get an album of unreleased 98-02 songs???

YEAH! I'm glad somebody else gave it a shot. I can't get over how much I'm feeling that record.

I bought that and Illmatic XX on mp3, but I need to pick up both physical copies soon. Nice collectibles.

One of most underrated MCs of all time, probably should have made my B-List but I didn't have the heart

young folks do not "determine" programming. programming on radio is specifically aimed to shove acts down young people's throats. face has talked about this.

Face is just being bitter because they never invited him to that "radio/MTV rap" club even though he has rapped with all of the biggest names of the 1990s (hence why he deserved to be on my b-list top 5)!! The reality is that people just didn't care. He DID catch a little bit of radio fame, at precisely the time when he could have taken off! Yet, people just didn't bite on it. It doesn't negate his talent, but it is just a reality of the situation. Scarface wasn't entirely pushed out by the record industry, people in general were just not feeling it!

Come to think of it, I think I put Scarface in my top-5 of local rap heroes and rightfully so..

My top 5 locals only?

(1) Scarface: Yeah. This dude is BAD! But really, outside of Houston and LA never caught on. Should. THIS is still perhaps the single best rap song ever released. Cadence. Substance. Delivery. Beats. Samples. What more do we need?

(2) DJ Quik: While Quik did get some national attention, realistically he was more like a traditional B-List supporting rapper who made a career rapping on other peoples' tracks BUT in LA dude is definitely a certified veteran legend.

(3) The Grouch: This dude was the antithesis to Eminem, he was a white rapper that surprised everybody. A Yay Area staple that didn't translate well out of the underground scene. Even in LA folks be like, "Who?"

(4) Silkk the Shocker: I also really loved Silkk, but this dude really didn't get big beyond the New Orleans area, even when No Limit was at its 1999 peak. Still, a solid and very original a rapper, and whose solo releases were actually better than his guest appearances.

(5) Twista: While for a brief window it appeared that Twista might jump on Death Row bandwagon and catch fame, he came a few years too late, especially as The Chronic 2001 essentially destroyed Death Row's attempt at an early 2000s revival. Twista was big in Chi-town though, and the dude had a lot of unique skills and an original persona. I personally was digging it.

worth checking out, but sounds nothing like Liquid Swords y'know? It's very much a product of its time. "Stay Out Of Bars" was always a track I liked. There's some good songs there.

aight, i'll give it a listen soon then.

here's what GZA himself said about the album:

"I was signed to Cold Chillin' 'bout five years ago," GZA recalled in 1995. "They put out an album but didn't promote it. They tried to put it out again last year after everything happened with the Clan, put a '94 date on it, but still didn't put any money behind it, so it didn't sell twice. I'm still proud of it, though. The beats ain't all that but, lyrically, shit was bangin'. So it wasn't all peaches and cream, but I was determined to break through. 'A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits.'"

.. interesting.

by the way, i just ordered this book: The Wu-Tang Manual

i'm gonna learn so much from it, right? so excited.

I had the 95 version back in the day> I think it was re-released w/ the original art again in the early 2000's.

I read the Wu-Tang Manual. It's great.

The MD Anderson library at the University of HOuston where I work has been digitgizing their Hip Hop collections from Special Collections department. They just released the link to HAWK's archive. http://digital.lib.uh.edu/collection/hawk

There are also tons of DJ screw, Big Moe, and H-town hip hop history items.

I got to go see a lot of these photos, old records, and other artifacts in the flesh at our library last year. One of those moments that actually made me feel some school spirit.
