Right now I'm listening to Black Sabbath, and while none of us really think this music is so heavy today, you must admit for 1970 this must have been pretty crushing stuff. Was there more lesser known music before this that was heavier? Maybe something like Blue Cheer? Is there anything else?

I'm guessing whenever distortion started to get used.

The Stooges S/T in 1969, I heard that album and was blown away by how heavy it was for its time.

My dad always says it was the song "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf in 1968.

"Revolution" by the Beatles was released in 1968 as well.

^Yeah, right.

That song is fucking weak compared to Sabbath.

Music got heavier once boogie-woogie was invented. Which makes Jools Holland the heaviest musician alive.

This is an absolutely preposterous recording. There is almost no volume to listen to it at - listen to it too quietly and you'll miss large bits of it; listen to it too loud and you'll probably die. A good study in how to be heavy.
