Like you know how in tv shows or movies set in the future when they dig up relics from this era or something and are puzzled by what they are: will this happen in the future? In this information age we live in, will all of what we know about history, and the history that is being made at this present moment, be saved to some kind of digital historical archive that we can use in the future for reference? If so, do you reckon this archive will last as long as the human race? Or can we not be fucked to do anything about preserving historical information, meaning that history from this era will eventually be forgotton? If you're not sure what I mean then just post a comment stating that.

If I understand you correctly, you're asking if we'll preserve our video/audio content for future use?
If so, sure. A good example of that is the dutch national archive. They have literally thousands of hours of film footage dating back to around 1905.
I heard from a friend that works there, that they're in a dilemma, when it comes to digitalizing all the celluloid that's stored in their vaults.
There's so much film, that even if they transfer what they have as quick as they possibly can, they'll still loose about a third.
It's very time consuming and the film is desintegrating right before their eyes, so to speak.
It's inevitable that a lot of important dutch history will be lost forever. Sad.

I've talked to archivists here at the U library and they're always very concerned about this very thing--about the "playback" technology outpacing the media. It's a real problem. They're doing things like trying to keep at least one piece of predominant old technology going--e.g., old reel to reels for tape, Beta machines, VHS machines, etc., so there will always be equipment for outdated formats. Of course, that gets tougher and tougher--where do you find replacment parts for those outmoded machines, for example. They also try to transfer as much as possible from old formats to new, but that's a constant struggle, too.

I study history in uni and I get the impression the internet is going to make it harder to find reliable sources for anything. People write less down in today's world and stuff gets put on websites that will eventually get lost or removed. The National Library of Wales is starting a project to archive sites it has deemed as important, but I guess you can see the problem with that straight away...#
I wouldn't think that civilisation will become that different before we are all thrown into a new dark age when oil runs out though.
