Sadly none of us took photos when he was out and about on his bike in London, so I don't know. It was a pretty vintage looking bike though, nothing fancy.

that's some boutique humor you got over there.

now get on with the gtr pedal info!
really liked the weird fuzz effect he used past weekend in belgium. i've been wondering what it is.

But you're not Thurston. The pedal won't make you as good as he is.

At the risk of coming across as a complete nerd… over the last couple of years he's been using the following (in order)

Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner
Dunlop/MXR Octave Fuzz JH-3S
MXR Phase 90 (Not always used)
ProCo Rat (Not always used)
EHX Metal Muff
Zoom Ultra Fuzz UF-01
Ernie Ball Volume or Mutron Wah/Vol

The only variations I've personally seen of this set-up is the inclusion/omission of the Phase 90 & Rat.

I'm surprised he pushed his green Sovtek / gray Civil War Big Muff off his board for a Metal Muff, especially after getting it modded/repaired by Analogman... though he has leaned towards "metal" tones when going for extreme distortion. I had a metal muff (w/ top boost) for a little while and it just sounded like a muddy mess and it didn't reach the volumes needed and made my amp (Fender twin Reverb) suck wind like it just ran for miles and couldn't catch breathe. I have two Tall Font Sovtek Big Muffs they rule real hard and its my most used pedal.

two vintage big-box electro-harmonics big muff's: 1x original traingle % 1x original ram's head, each used by jimi hendrix, guts ripped out and modified to attach to the crank shaft of his rusty thrift store bicycle.

Green Muffs are probably my favorite fuzz pedals out there, but I actually just got a Metal Muff the other day, coincidentally. Found one really cheap (The original model) with box for $40.

I've only played with it a little and I actually think it's pretty good, though I am pretty fond of most EHX pedals. It's really easy for it to sound messy, usually I have the distortion between 3 and 5 and the volume slightly higher to counter all the gain it can give. It sounds good, not sure how much I'll use it though to be honest.

James Sedwards pedal setup:

https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/kexp/15266897509/

He's playing the "Patti Smith gift" gold jazzmaster (to Thurston) into:

Boss TU-2 (or TU-3)
Pete Cornish G-2 Fuzz? (wow, expensive! ...think these are specialized Big Muff clones original designed for David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame)
Dunlop Hendrix Octave Fuzz
not sure of this basic grey/silver boutique/diy/clone type looking thing...
ProCo Turbo Rat
looks to be one of those Mooer micro pedals (Reverb?)
Boss Digital Delay (DD-3?, DD-5?, DD-7?)
Digitech Echo Plus PDS-8000 (awesome 8 second delay/looper used by Kevin Shields/MBV back in their heyday... I had one of these years ago until the IC delay chips inside of it went sour ...)

VooDoo Labs Pedal Power

Ampeg Amp not sure of the model...

Thurston's setup:

https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/kexp/15453310712/

Boss TU-2/TU-3 (the "buffer" in these is decent to keep the guitar signal nice and strong... though the Octave Fuzz has a buffer too but its not as good sounding)
ProCo Turbo Rat
Dunlop Hendrix Octave Fuzz
Electro Harmonix Metal Muff
Zoom Ultra Metal (I think I saw another photo somewhere where he's using the "metal" and not the "fuzz")
Ernie Ball Volume Pedal

OneSpot Power Supply

Amp: Fender Hot Rod Deville (is it the 2 x 12 or the 4 x 10? my guess is 2 x 12... as it would sound better?)

I was using a big box deluxe memory man for a long time but it has its flaws (abit too "hissy" even for tape emulation, distorted signal, and its just big) and a Line6 DL4 but I only prefer the looper mode and don't like the delay sound in that looper mode so I use another delay/echo in front of the DL4. I wish I had my digitech/dod pds 1002 2 second delay looper still (the one Lee mentions and uses) it just started to sound like the op amp chips were going bad, same with my old PDS 8000 (8 second looper version!) that was a real bummer, since they are pretty much un-repairable once the op amps go bad since they require specific chips which are long obsolete.

My favorite delay/echo right now is the Catalinbread Echorec (based on the old Binsen Echorec) its really the best new echo/delay effect I've tried in a very long time, plus its the size of a MXR pedal. The MXR Carbon Copy is okay, abit too dark and the runaway oscillation is too immediate and not pleasing enough sounding. I'm not much of a Boss fan, but I also do like the DD-3 (I have one that's modded so the delay trails decay in a more analog delay way...)

btw, I caught this funny error in that interview. "...James Damascus from Dinosaur Jr. for a certain kind of tone - a kind of knarly tone..."

hehe James Damascus?

Lee had a Ditto X2 in his rig for the Milan date of his acoustic tour. ( I wrote down his setup here => http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/sho...1&postcount=38 )
I love catalinbread's stuff, also ED makes a couple delays worth checking out imo, the Dispatch Master and the Disaster Transport JR (for more analog-esque feel).
