scissorshock is definitely not grindcore IMO.

The noise, simplicity, power, speed, even experimentation, etc. of grindcore is probably what initially attracts people to it. I, myself, as a youngster, usually cared about two things: speed and complexity. So, yeah.. grindcore!

But.. I do have trouble with your statement "as fans of Sonic Youth". I think Sonic Youth fans probably -- and it's the reason I still frequent this board, despite the frustrations -- have the most open taste in music of any other band, simply because they have tons of fans and all are into Sonic Youth for different reasons and come from different backgrounds and like different things. Personally, my favorite genres are surf, glitch, death metal, whatever weird stuff Polvo is, and jazz -- I'm sure someone else is into country, folk, grindcore, polka, r&b more. So, yeah, I think "being into Sonic Youth" doesn't necassarily mean you only like alternative rock and/or noise. I know that wasn't the point of your post, I'm just saying.

I think it's hard to be in a grindcore band for a long time, because your tastes, erm.. maybe not "mature" but.. it's hard to play that type of music for years without doing something different. But I think many people making music are attracted to the rage and simplicity of it, and in a lot of ways that actually parallels what a lot of people like about Sonic Youth: the noise offers release. Maybe Sonic Youth isn't the fastest band around, but they do stir up a .. youthful .. ruckus and I think I can find tons of similarities in thinking and so-called revolution between SY and grindcore. So, yeah, it definitely seems likely to me.

Anthrax is good for one reason: "BLACK LODGE", their Twin Peaks tribute song. Anyway.. you know.. grindcore is cool, but it's all about power violence. I want to make an art rock power violence band.

Yeah, Spectral, but we have been lumped there before. I think because of the um... drums or something.. though I did used to scream a bit.

Haha feedback skronk up in this hizzyyyyyyy!

And I've said it before, I'll say it again, and I don't care if people disrespect me after this: I like almost everything Metallica has done. The first few albums are amazing, their cover songs are great, the Black album/Load/Reload are.. hmm.. they're okay, I guess, but I really dig St. Anger. There's just something about that album. I really want to hate it and I have made fun of it, but the fact is, it's just a truely bizarre record that is good in spite of itself. The production is really cool (minus the sewage pipe drums) and the guitar tones are amazing and.. weird. One of the songs has 17 riffs! I don't really enjoy Metallica as people or even as a concept, but their music appeals to me for some odd reason. Though nothing will ever beat fucking Master of Puppets.

yeah, spazz are awesome, but i did a list earlier where i mentioned like the most essential bands in grind, so if i had to pick the most essential power violence band, it would be charles bronson.

Master of Puppets is a classic, not just for the band, but also metal, and 20th century music as a whole...it's probably the only Metallica album I still listen to. I think the problem with St. Anger (despite what metalhead wanky guitar solo lovers would tell you) wasn't its lack of lead playing but more the fact that the songs were just too long for their simplicity- riffs and yelling are not the way to make epic songs...as for the production, I actually kind of liked the "sewage pipe" drum sound, but sometimes the guitars sounded out of tune or intonation or something.

Back to grindcore...it's not really something that interests me. Probably the closer thing to grindcore I've been able to really appreciate (sp?) is Meshuggah, and even then, I'm not sure I'd describe them as grindcore.

ng to me.. instead of going down some route wherein Metallica would utilize keyboards, acoustic guitars, effects pedals, etc. Metallica decided to "experiment" with structures and production.. however, at the same time, the whole thing sounds really -- like you sound -- out of tune. Very bizarre. Interesting record, dunno if I think it's "good", but I enjoy it for its odd tones. And what the fuck's with the last 8 seconds in Some Kind of Monster? Weirdest thing in Metallica's catalogue? It's like a no wave circus riff!

Another thing about St. Anger is that the whole album.. well, most of the album.. was just a PRODUCTION! It wasn't... they came up with some riffs and some parts or whatever and Bob cut it up and pieced it together. That's probably the real reason there are no solos: there's no real theme or unity to any of the pieces. No real progressions; the parts are pretty interchangable. Because it's purely a producer's record! Also, oddly, Lars seems to randomly speed up and slow down for no apparent reason all throughout the album.

Very odd, hard to listen to from beginning to end, though strangely... interesting. "Invisible Kid" is really cool.
