Yeh the new Lips record is amazing. It's been said, but it's a good balance of the newer electronic/orchestral elements of Yoshimi & Soft Bulletin, and the more guitar-based stuff from their earlier period...I also dig the funk element present in a few songs, not overpowering, but done with good measure. Steven Drozd has yet again outdone himself with his arrangements (seriously he doesn't get enough credit, the guy is a fucking genius.) and it's probably the first Lips album that Coyne doesn't sound like he's straining with the vocals.

And Pompeii Am Gutterdamerung is one of the most mindblowing tracks I've heard in a while. That melody is ridiculous.

I absolutely love it.

I hated Yoshimi and actually lost alot of interest when that came out. This is the PERFECT bridge from Zireeka & Soft Bulletin. Glad to see Steven back on drums(more drums please!).

I step up from Yoshimi.

I think this is the album that should've came after Soft Bulletin.

They've renewed my interest, so I got nothing but love for the lips.

Also, I find the album a bit "dark" in content at times, which is what was missing on Yoshimi.

Favorite: Hit to death in the future head(by far)

The songwriting is incredibly boring. Where in the pre-Soft Bulletin days the songs were inherently eccentric, all of a sudden their quirkyness is limited to silly sound effects and dressing as animals. Without the stellar production, recent Lips would be absolute garbage. Hell, I think At War with the Mystics is garbage anyways.

Pompeii Am Gutterdamerung is my favorite song as well. But you have to give Floyd some credit since the bass line comes from "One of These Days"

I think a lot of people get the wrong idea about the flaming lips nowadays. Originally and for a long time they were a crazy psychedelic noise pop rock band up until about Clouds Taste Metallic. Then they tried out synthesizers with Yoshimi and Soft Bulletin adn got huge exposure. I'm glad a friend turned me on to the earlier stuff.

Here's some great early songs you should hear if you dont like the stuff off their last two records:

I like the Lips a lot, but I think the new record is kind of boring. It's vaguely fun to listen to on headphones but that's about it. I'll take Hit to Death... or Clouds Taste Metallic any day over this stuff...
