Is it possible for a band nowadays to sound good without getting criticism? Seriously The Strokes and Interpol are good bands and so what if they had some influences of bands from the years before? Is it wrong to listen to good bands (Television and Joy Division who these bands apparently rip off) and try to have a band that's influenced by them?
Some of you guys take music too seriously.

And I'm drunk.

Seriously The Strokes and Interpol are good bands No.

and so what if they had some influences of bands from the years before? Indeed.

Is it wrong to listen to good bands No.

(Television and Joy Division who these bands apparently rip off) and try to have a band that's influenced by them? That sentence makes no sense.

Some of you guys take music too seriously.Yes, and evidently so do you.

And I'm drunk. Grow up.

In this situation I would say: What is this shit? Television? Joy Division? Put on some Black Sabbath, weenie.

Every band receives criticism; no music thus far in history has been universally regarded as perfect.

Yeah, I don't believe in the criticised-less band. Every choice a band makes regarding their sound alienates some crowd. The very virtues touted by some are the vices by others. There's no litmus test for "good."

I enjoy Interpol for the way the play so rigid and calculated.. especially on songs like "C'Mere" and "Obstacle 1". I like their first album best, but I hear good things about their new record too.

I haven't heard much by The Strokes. I have their first album around here somewhere- they are very 'NYC', in both image and sound. They have great names, all of them.

Critics are bitches. Oh well.

i agree to the "we are so hip so we cant like a relativly popular band now they have become famous" thing....... i agree to the sentiment that over critisism of such a band for critisism sake is bullshit.....
interpol are great, well bright lights is great, antics is ok. the strokes are an ok band, not a huge fan myself but there you go. artic minkeys are well deserved a place in rock history and do not deserve the critisism they receive... but some bands do deserve every bit of shit thats thrown at them..........

like what you like, stand up for what you like, genre jealosy is a harbringer (is that the word) of elitist chinstroking jealousy...

erm, ok, ive lost the point of this thread.....................

i know what you mean Trasher, i think all bands have to influenced by another or more than one band, like when the interviewer askes "who are your influences?" and your band sounds similar to Interpol/Strokes/YYY or whatever your not gonna lie and say "awwwww S Club 7" i think in someway these bands dont really start out trying to sound like their influences, i think if thats the music thats inside you and thats the music that gets yr blood pumping and gets the hairs on the back of yr neck standing well i think its just a natural progression that these bands that influenced you will play a part in the sounding of any original music you write, i, for example love simple music, love writing it and listening to it, what i mean by this is basic and simple music, verse/chorus/verse/bridge /simple solo/double chorus end... its why i love Nirvana so much, like i mean - when i was a nipper i loved Guns and Roses and i wanted to play like Slash but basically i had'nt a fuckin snowflakes chance in hell of doing it.. till Nirvana came along like a very tall man and handed me the book i was trying to reach from the top shelf and said "here go do it yourself" i remember the night i learned to play "polly" i could'nt believe it - now i didnt want to be Slash anymore, i wanted to be me and from that i got such a kick outa writing simple melodic songs.
a band can sound like everything you every wanted them to sound like without criticism but there is one fact that balances this like the Ying/Yang of the whole world and thats the fact that there will always be a critic.

Interpol's first album, Turn on the Bright Lights, i remember the day and the shop i bought that CD. (they day before xmas eve/tower records dublin) its just one of those CD's that make your whold life worthwhile.

well, there's a bunch of bands out there that are really good without ripping other (already proven, succesful and original) bands off, it seems so lazy to rewrite joy division's transmissions, especially done without any ounce of emotion.

and yeah, i would rather die than live in a world where dogmatic thinking (like you saying "a band shouldn't get any criticism") is the norm.

besides, i think there's something really prefabricated about the strokes (the vocalist is a former child actor and son of model agency founder, the guitar player is son of a flop singer from the 70's...) i'm not saying they are the indie (by the way, they hardly released a note on an independent label, how does this make them in any way "indie") menudo but there's something really fishy in there.

that said, go listen to them, i don't care, i just pointed out that they were not original and not that good at that even. i have never liked them and wouldn't give a shit about what other people think about them.

that's exactly why i like the strokes. it's a bunch of good stuff melded in with pretty boys. it's a neat concept. "last nite" is everything right with their influences from the past 30-so years.
