nope, it's a regular plastic tank. I Don't know what former use it had.

So far we used:
a chair
a rain barrel
barrel
feather
that white plastic tank
some metal plates
inner tubes of bicycle
some wood
some metal plates
washbasin
and some other random stuff

oh and a snare drum

The iron barrel has a cool background:

Our saxophonist worked in a chemical eineering factory where he got that barrel. It was used for the bearing of a chemical substance which later was used for production of weight-reduction pills.

yeah, it looks a bit fragile, but believe me, it's very solid.

Yeah, I've always loved the idea of people creating instruments. A reason I love Harry Partch so much (amongst other things).

As drum sets are ridiculously expensive and most bands usually just use similiar setups anyway (where's the fucking cowbell?), it's nice and inspirng to see people beating on things that aren't the norm.. I mean, if you think about it, you can bang on ANYTHING and make a sound, so it's odd that this hasn't been explored much outside of noise kids. Also, I'd reccomend beating on a VCR casing.

I said this on another thread, but I'm slowly (as in, I have all the equipment but I just haven't done it yet) building an acoustic guitar with a broken neck (so no matter what you play, it sounds like it's going really out of tune if you move just a little bit), fitted with 6 banjo strings and 6 bass strings all in the same tuning peg, with a catball contact mic (yes, a contact mic inside of a catball) inside the acoustic guitar hole and guitar pickups at the top of the neck.. so the guitar will be played out of two amps at the same time for two very different sounds.

I have to heap my praise on this kind of project as well. People who 'make somethin' outta nothin'' fill me with endless joy. I've thought about making a thread about this very subject many a time.

the coolest home made instrument i saw a was a huge log with pickups inside the log and nails inside the log with a tiny guitar string wrapped in varying lengths between the nails.. i got to play with it, it was quite neat. sounded like a fucked up harp.

I loved that when you posted it on the rare records thread and I'll love it again. What's so good about homemade instruments is that a number of them end up looking unique, as well as sounding different. It's interesting when you keep on adding stuff to them and create these little creatures that make sounds.

Pretty much sums up the bizarro Junk Yard blues rock sounds of Doo Rag. A Tuscon, Arizona based band that was formed in the early 90's by Bob Log and Thermos Malling. They toured quite extensivly in the early to mid 90's and I was lucky enough to catch them play a number of times. Always mind numbing. Bob with a crazy old resonator guitar with a few old contact mics being run through some archaic PA system...then singing into a funnel connected to a tube that goes through a vintage vacuum cleaner with I'm guessing a mic inside it going

 

into the PA. Thermos playing a total junk yard drum kit made up of upside down old tin wash bins with empty film reels being smashed on top. And for his kick drum which he would just hit with one arm he always seemed to use a budwiser 24 Bottle cardboard box,,, and it always was a bud case! For added visual effect (if there wasn't enough already) there was a old Oscilliscope with those sweet old tube wave formes boucing to their wild racket.

If you dig scratchy blues coming out of a old 78 player being covered by pussy galore and then stomped on by captain beefheart I seriously recommend these guys.

And I present to you their first 3 singles which really are their best material along side a super rare tour cassette that sounds fantastic. All digitized by me at one of Buenos Aires's finest sound houses. Their 2 full lengths are not too hard to find and a nice porch listen as well.

Great stuff... I think the band Neptune make alot of their instruments and man they are LOUD, one of the msot chaotic sounding bands i've heard live.

I think one of the guys in Neptune works at a metal shop or a scrapyard or some such.
I enjoyed them when I saw them too.
