Sorry to bore you with this question. However, I was arguing with a friend ad he really believes that this issue is widely accepted in Europe. I can't agree with this, I could think the cities being more accepted, but not the all of the countries. Can someone tell me please?

i would think itd be more of an issue in eastern europe if anywhere in europe at all. ive been to paris, all over northern france, amsterdam, barcelona, madrird, london, and dublin and everything seemed pretty tolerant everywhere. but really, theres gonna be hateful people everywhere you go.

It depends of the places. Where I live now, in Lille (northern France), people are generally tolerant. But when I lived in Marseille (southern France), it seemed like every people there was hateful towards homosexuals, they thought it was against the nature, disgusting, etc etc etc.

Homosexuality = To an extent we have been given more rights than before. To an extent.

Inoffensive homosexual stereotypes = Yes, mostly.

Pretty much what batreleaser said. Been to many places all around Europe and in the majority of so-called 'western' Europe the environment seemed very tolerant. It might be an issue in some of the eastern european countries, but it's only due to the fact that we had less time to get used to the phenomenon of different sexual orientations - until 1989 under communist regime any sign of difference to had been strictly surpressed.
But still, there are reasonable differences among eastern European post-socialist countries in public image of this matter. The naturally more liberal countries (Czech Republic, Hungary) do not have any problem accepting homosexuality as it is (registrated partnership of homosexual couples was legally approved a couple of years ago in Czech Republic), however the ones with strong catholic tradition (Poland, Slovakia) seem to have a problem with this. I, as a citizen of Slovakia, think that it will be really tough to pass the law about legalized partnership, however I see that the public image of homosexuality has been changing a LOT for the past few years. You can see gay couples hand in hand on the streets, there are lots of gay bars in the capital city and you can see a lot of it in TV too (like, contestants of reality shows do not have a problem talking about their sexual preferences etc etc).
So, all in all, I guess we're becoming a bit more civilised, too

generally speaking its accepted (whatever that means) in europe. well most of europe. berlin is ver accepting but when i was in poland not so long ago they where very homophobic. there was a gay rights march there a while back which ended in a total bloodbath after the people marching were attacked. they abandoned all future marches.

in some smaller towns and in the north of england especially its not as widely accepted, infact in some parts its considered beyond the pale but generally thats not the rule.

Because they are really, really annoying people? I would have thought that was blindingly obvious.

i think homophobia [though I dont like the term, it dont believe people to have some uncontrolable fear of homosexuality, but for intents and purposes, it will do] is just like racism, it is the result of ignorance, isolation and lack of experience and exposure with homosexuality in general. People harbor racist stereotyps and beliefs commonly because they are rarely exposed to other "races" and so they sit in a kind of isolation where they dont have to confront any of their stereotypes with a dose of reality. This is the same with homosexuality, people are uncomfortable about it because they have not been exposed to it properly. Exposure is the key to confront and replace stereotyping.

theres still a lot of religious people out there who are taught to believe homosexuality is wrong, so therefore, things will never change. i grew up in a town on cape cod in massachusetts which was subsequently the only republican conservative town in the state, or one of the few anyways. i have a gay uncle and a lesbian aunt anhd obviously it didnt bother me at all, some of the people i went to school with would assume that if you have a gay relative theres a greater chance of you being gay, thats how fucking stupid and fucking ignorant people were in my highschool!

my uncle's partner is actually one of the two producers of long running broadway show rent, jeffrey sellers. they are obviously a couple of millionaires, and have a guest apartment in nyc where i get to stay all the time, its rad.
