The Texans set a team record with 14 penalties against the Ravens.

Not the cause, but a good place to start!

That is the just the law of averages again. Texans had a lot of low penalties and a lot of TDs, so averages caught up with them, they didn't score any TDs and had a few extra penalties. By the way, how did the law of averages catch with Ravens? We already gave up 7 TDs in our first game, it was only logical that we'd tighten it up. So what do I expect for the Ravens next Sunday? Naturally for the Ravens to give up a few TDs to the Bills, and possibly even lose the game to go 2-2 (which I wouldn't complain about by the way).. I also expect Patriots to lose in Atlanta because (a) its the Georgia Dome, (b) Atlanta hasn't choked on offense instead Dolphins got a lucky play and Falcons defense actually improved in the loss to Miami with 5 sacks so there is something to build on (c) the Law of Averages dictates there is just NO WAY that Patriots will rise to 4-0 (when even they admit they've been getting really really lucky) while the better Falcons fall 1-3 at home??

Averages are the name of the game, and its what makes sports so damned exciting for for a short moment, we think we glimpse a team beating the average. However, nobody beats the Law of Averages just like nobody beats Father Time, an given a large enough sample size of games played, it always evens out . Sports becomes so much more predictable than it isn't..

Yet ESPN powerrankings STILL have the Niners in the Top-10 AND above the Ravens? Even Hensely said that is bullshit, he had the Ravens as number 5 after beating the Texans and not letting a TD in two consecutive games. I swear, when will I realize that ESPN is just ONE HUGE SPORTS TROLL???!!!??!!!

Bill Simmons from Grantland proposed that the Texans offer the Steelers a first round draft pick and Matty Schaub for Rothlisberger.

I bet that would rule.

So many like to throw stones as Schaubly......here are some sad but true facts about the Texans D:

In the last twelve games played, the Texans have allowed eleven drives of 70 yards are longer. Five of these games allowed drives over 80 yards.

Dating back to Sunday vs. Jacksonville followed four days later by Thursday at Detroit (Thanksgiving Day), the Texans won each of these games in OT, but allowed Jacksonville and Detroit to each score over 30 points.

This is when the Texans as an entire team started to slide only winning FIVE of the last NINE games played.

That is the bad and here is some good:

Texans D has only allowed 3 TD's in the last nine quarters played: Ravens, Tennessee and last quarter on opening night against San Diego.

Texans D held the Ravens to only 16 points......you should be able to beat a team when the Defense holds them to 16 points.

I don't know, Rob?

Rothlisberger has looked very meager in the two primetime games I've watched this season.

There is no doubt Rothlisberger would respond better under pressure......but when was the last time Rothlisberger threw for over 4000 yards? Schaubs done so the each of the past three seasons.

In Rothlisberger's lack of mobility, I'm guessing he is still more mobile than Schaubly!

Just showing the numbers is a bit misleading. True, Peyton is playing an intense version of the lights out Joe Montana/Joe Flacco in the post-season with 12 TDs and no INT, which if he had done that in the playoffs would have beaten the record that the two Joes tied for..

Yes, this is impressive, in a Fantasy football vacuum, but fantasy football is a consolation prize for teams and players who aren't legitimately contending for the Championship, like Drew Brees or Matt Stafford last season..

ESPN actually wrote an interesting and revealing article about how the highest scoring season teams don't always translate into Superbowls or even post-season success...

Quote:
f the 16 teams that have scored at least 500 points in a season since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, only four went on to win the Super Bowl -- the 1999 Rams (526 points), the 2009 Saints (510 points), the 1994 49ers (505 points) and those ’98 Broncos (501 points). Included in those impressive, sling-it-around teams that didn’t get it done are the 16-0 Patriots of 2007 (589 points) and the 15-1 Vikings (556 points) in 1998.

But the ’99 Rams scored 32.9 points per game as the Greatest Show on Turf, and they were fifth in the league in rushing (128.7 yards per game). The ’09 Saints were sixth in the league in rushing (131.6 yards per game). The 1994 49ers were sixth in the league in rushing (118.6 yards per game). And the 1998 Broncos, with Hall of Famer John Elway at quarterback, were second in the league in rushing at 154.3 yards per game.

There are also two members of the 500-point club who went to a Super Bowl, but lost in the title game to a top five rushing attack. The ’83 Redskins (541 points) were third in the league in rushing and the 2001 Rams (503 points) were fifth in the league in rushing.

The ’07 Patriots were 13th in rushing; the ’98 Vikings were 11th.

What does it mean? It means the Broncos will need a little more from the three-man rotation at running back than they’re getting. Not much more -- they’re 14th in rushing at the moment -- especially when things get squeaky tight down the stretch.

So while Peyton is thriving playing with essentially four WRs, the Broncos are not running the ball enough. They are scoring plenty of TDs in the air, in fact, are on pace to set an NFL record if the Law of Averages doesn't catch up with them (which it more than likely will)...

EVEN if Broncos manage to score 600 points and set an all-time season record, STILL they aren't truly favored to win the Superbowl unless they can significantly improve their running game. At the end of the day, to win a Superbowl you have to (a) score, (b) defend at a top-10 level and (c) run the ball. Almost EVERY single Superbowl winner managed to do all three to win it all, and great, high-volume season teams like the 2011 15-1 Packers, or the 2007 16-0 Patriots, or the 2011 14-2 Falcons, just because you score like crazy, doesn't mean you're truly favored. Its the teams that are the most balanced that win it all, and simply put, Denver isn't it. They're giving away WAY too many TDs in garbage time, and not running the ball well enough to truly contend. Its a small sample size, so we can reevaluate it at the halfway point, but if Denver keeps playing at this pace, they will not be able to pull it off..

Also notice Denver right now leads the league with 8 fumbles and 5 turn overs, so if they weren't scoring at such a prolific rate, they just might be doing much worse with bad ball handling like that..

And yes, with the Ravens ranking like 25th in rushing right now, they are most definitely NOT contending unless the season picks up later

YES - running dictates all......especially in the post season!

However, there is NO NEED to kill your running back so early in the season.

The Texans learned this the hard way last year brutalizing Arian Foster for so many carries. The Texans under Kubiak have an unbelievable record when running the ball X number of times in a game......something crazy like 40-3.

Houston sports radio is screaming for the Texans to start running more. I believe Foster is a better back when having more and more carries, but no need to start this in September. The Texans next Division Game isn't until November. Between November 3rd and December 15th, the Texans play FOUR Division Games. I'm guessing this part of the season is when the Texans and Broncos start running the ball more.

Yes and no. Look at how many injuries keep popping up because of poor conditioning from all the practice limits imposed in the new rule books. Look at how so many teams in the past 3 seasons since the rule changes were implemented that have improved steadily across the season as their conditioning improved. So you have to keep at it, not to the extreme, but you can't play soft either, or your players will get injured in the post-season..

I love Bill Simmons, I love Grantland, I read him every week for years now, and I have even taken to sending him snarky emails boasting about his shit picks in Ravens games (I started this after the beat down of his Patriots last January, I know he reads or has an intern read most of emails, so I like to send them hoping the friendly trash talk kicks him in the balls a bit..)

Here is his recent comments about that:

Quote:
Has anyone made the "it's like Crystal Palace and Norwich City playing a Premier League game in New York City" joke yet? If so, I'll take it. Anyway, in Monday's podcast with Cousin Sal, I suggested that the Steelers should blow it up and trade Ben Roethlisberger to Houston for Matt Schaub and a first-round pick. That was immediately followed by dozens of Steelers fans e-mailing me various ways to have sex with myself. Kudos to Pete in Wexford, Pennsylvania, for suggesting that I buy a Tom Brady bobblehead on eBay and see how far I can cram it up my ass while "filming it for your piece of shit YouTube Channel." We might have to try that! From the producers of House Eats 3, it's Tom Brady Bobblehead Ass Cram! Well, what if Houston offered Schaub and TWO first-round picks? Would you consider it then? Would the Texans do it? (Cut to Houston fans nodding "yes" vigorously with tears in their eyes.) Where are you headed with a 32-year-old QB who has already taken a ton of hits and now finds himself stuck on a crummy team with a Swiss cheese offensive line? It's worth a conversation, at least. I wouldn't deal Big Ben — instead, I'd come up with a fake injury for him around Week 8 (to guarantee a top-five pick), then shelve him until 2014 so he didn't keep getting shellacked. But this Sunday in London? I think he drives his trade value up against Minnesota's violently awful pass defense.

Found the exact numbers: Texans are 43-5 when they run the ball at least 30 times per game.

The Seahawks are ranked first in defense and the Texans are ranked second. The biggest difference......Seattle has forced TEN turnovers to Houston's ONE.

Seatle / Texans First Half Stats:

Texans have 324 yards to Seattle's 88.

Texans had 19 first downs.

Texans scored on final four possessions of the half: 90, 80, 15 and 67 yards.

Schaubs 226 passing yards, most thru halftime among 16 QB's playing early games.

Schaubs EIGHT TD's thru 14 quarters of play this season......only Peyton Manning has thrown more this season!

By far the best half of football I remember since the Texans were 11-1 last season.

BULLS ON PARADE!

OH - BEST halftime news: Baltimore trails 20-7 at Buffalo!

Hate to burst your bubble there Bytor, but the second half saw Seattle come back at match it 20-20, and the Ravens are at least in a position to win the game at 17-23 with 6:31 left... Doesn't mean they will, but at least they made it a fair game. I think the better part of today is that the Steelers are 0-4 for the first time in 35 years, and I just now watched the Vikings pull off an impossible goal line stand in the final minute to win the game. So even if the Ravens lose, 2-2 isn't the end of the world (especially since the Bengals also lost today), but 0-4 essentially is, which is also bad news for the Giants

Damn. Flacco last pass on a potential game winning drive in the final minute gets tipped and INT. His 5 INT is misleading, three of them were entirely on the receivers, they were good passes. Still, there are no excuses. 2-2 isn't bad, but now Cleveland is in a three-way tie for AFC North. At least the Steelers are 0-4

My real hope is in the Falcons tonight. The Ravens loss isn't too terrible, we had as fair a chance as any to come back and win it after 4 INT, so there is potential. I don't mind losing, so long as you beat yourself on mistakes rather than just get your ass whooped. Baltimore made mistakes, and still could have won. Steelers had the same situation for themselves today. That is what happened to Atlanta last week. Now, its literally do-or-die for the Falcons. They HAVE to beat Patriots, 1-3 with a 4-0 division leaders is the statistical end of your season...

Seattel / Texans Second Half:

Texans led 20-3 with 5:02 remaining in the third quarter:

The last time the Houston Texans scored in the 2nd Half of a game: DeAndre Hopkins game winning TD catch in OT TWO weeks ago.

Third straight game Matt Schaub has thrown a pick six (Kubiak alrady taking blame saying he put #8 in a bad situation = CRAP!) Maybe Kubicak should have called a run play, but Schaub didn't have to throw in that busted play.

It is now time to question if Schaub is a leader.

ONLY Eli Manning has more INT's this season than Schaub's six picks.
ONLY Peyton Manning has more TD's than Schaub's eight.

This was the 4th OT game out of the last eleven played, Texans won first three.

Texans had 3 penalties for 51 yards thru the first three quarters. The 2 penalties for 35 yards in 4Q & OT.

I know what you mean, Tom Brady practically handed the Falcons the game with that fumble, and then Matt Ryan choked on 4 consecutive plays at the goal line? Fuck it, is what it is, but Falcons just choked away their play-off contention. Interestingly, they are still one of the best rosters in the NFC, so this humbling 3 losses in a row after a terrible 0-4 in the preseason might motivate guys to finally step up, and 2014/15 season might really be Falcons year..

This year is increasingly looking like a boringly predictable Peyton Manning-Tom Brady battle in the AFC Conference and possibly Saints-Seahawks for the NFC?

Saints-Broncos Superbowl?
