How about on Richard D. James Album by Aphex Twin? That was one of the first popular records to use software synthesisers and drum machines.

And just listen to what he did with them

It came out in 1996. I don't really hear anything too innovative on that record; drum machines played on synths (even if this was SOFTWARE and not hardware, that doesn't really make it all that innovative to listen to) and melodies combined had been around for 20 or so years. Ever heard Kraftwerk? Besides, by that point in Warp's history, they'd already released a lot of innovative stuff... I'd argue that Polygon Window's "Surfing on Sine Waves" was more innovative than the Richard D James album.

I think he has a lot of innovative work; he's a true original and a class act. I just don't see what distinguishes Richard D. James as innovative. I CARE BECAUSE YOU DO had already been released by that point as well.

I don't think "beats" represent musical innovativion, except perhaps the stuff venetian snares does. And again, I Care Because You Do already had that kinda stuff. Just wasn't as refined.
