I remember when I wanted to buy an Einstuerzende Neubauten album, and the only ones available were Halber Mensch and Haus der Luege. I went with Halber Mensch, because I didn't get or appreciate Haus der Luege's cover art.

Haus der Luge's cover art makes me feel muy uncomfortable.

Poor horsey. :7(

I can be annoyed by a really crappy cover, but if it's a band I know and love, it won't stop me from checking it out.

An unknown band, I suppose it's come up a couple of times in the past. I generally try not to focus on things like covers though, unless it's something particularly extraordinary.

Nefeli makes a good point about multi-album artists. You could even see that related to SY. For instance I love the cover of Murray Street. Interesting picture, good font, overall unassuming yet effective aesthetics. Based on my taste for cover art and inability to posses lots of money, I would probably pick that record over say BMR, if I didn't know anything about this band. Not that I dislike the BMR cover, but I never really liked the font chosen for the lettering, I dunno, doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the photo. Musically however, BMR surpasses Murray Street, no question.

It's not so strange. I've listened to my first Can and Neu! lp's when I was about 10. They weren't mine, but if I had the dough I'd have probably bought them.

Did anyone used to shop at record places like Coconuts or Strawberries like that when they were younger? There was a Coconuts next to the Stop n Shop when I lived in a town in Mass called Franklin, and once a week when my mom would go shopping she'd take me to Coconuts and buy me one casette, and later, one cd. Man, I got all sorts of shit from that lame ass store; "Ride the Lighning", "Master of Puppets", "Paranoid", "Nevermind", "Appetite for Destruction", The Kinks Greatest Hits, etc.. Wierd to think about now but that terrible commerical shop was super influential in my development as a lover of music.

Welp, that's way cooler than what I could even imagine listening at age 10, not that Slayer and Metallica aren't cool, yknow what I mean. I didn't really hear any Krautrock till I was like, 16, I think. The first Krautrock LP I heard was Can's "Future Days", decent album but bad intro to the genre.

Much as I love the man, I'm not sure I could ever offend my record collection with this cover:

For great sounds/"arrgh!" artwork, the first album by The Feelies takes some beating.

You can usually tell the greatness/crapness of most Krautrock by the relative goodness/shittiness of the cover (I speak as somoeone who was suckered into buying the Grobschnitt LP...)
