Tucker Carlson is the worst Democrat ever. I blame him more than any individual Republican for the watered down, compromised, fuckup circle jerk version of ACA that we ended up with.

Yes, it's strange that it's not bigger news. It's tying things up quite a bit in the Midwest though. Something is fishy though. The fact that Wisconsin is underway, and Michigan is such a big concern for the Trump team makes me more suspicious than I was. I still think MI will go to Trump, but I maintain a high level suspicion of election tampering, and if that can be proven or uncovered at even the smallest level, it will be a mighty blow.

Yeah, I'm confirmation seeking.

Whether we go along and get along or fight fight fight, I, like John Oliver and all the pop-media bros who have suspiciously co-opted his "Nothing about this is normal" message on Nov. 13, feel very strongly that we need to keep this conversation going.
Those of us who are interested, concerned, terrified enough to commit time and energy and money to fighting this administration in the future will all be better off if we can spitball about logistics and keep a hawk eye on Trump and his zombie cabal of a cabinet.

The initial question "Is Donald Trump really a serious contender for the Republican nomination?" is certainly moot at this point (as Rob said, I'd say he has a pretty good shot), but at the same time, seeing that question posed that way is a constant reminder of how bizarre and alien this new American reality is. So, fuck.. change the thread, kill the thread, keep it going, who cares? But it would be counterproductive to abandon the conversation altogether.
As I've said, I have precious few people in my "real life" with whom I can talk openly about this, and this thread has been helpful to me, has helped me process and grieve and given me an outlet for the incessant bitching that is in my nature. So I think I kind of need this conversation, whatever form it takes.

the BIG problem with these articles are that they don't look at how self-serving and exculpatory the people are being. I (used to) work with just the type of folks in the article. And, since I am white and blue eyed and don't talk a bunch, they generally felt free to express themselves. And, what the majority of them wanted was to see a white, male, gun owning society. That and tax cuts. Peel back the onion (I was going to say something else ) and you'll find just that.

I hear you. I work with people like this too. What's more, I cover school districts that are filled with high school teachers who think it's OK to spout their political opinions to their students, even if the smarter ones do it with some measure of subtlety.

In all the talk about what Hillary got "wrong" and what Trunp got "right" in reaching the American people, we can't blind ourselves to the fact that many of the people are extremely limited in their thinking. In-group biases are a fact of life, and I think this article (the Newsweek one) acctually does a fairly good job of illustrating this. We hear people unabashedly claiming that they want fewer "Hispanics" in their town.

I get that Hillary didn't run an ideal campaign, and as Symbols had said (in this thread or maybe in the "funny" one) it is a mistake to simply write-off Trump and his supporters as ignorant or bad people... but it's also a mistake to pretend as though ignorant and bad people were not part of what made this happen.

but if your particular observations are universal, how come these people voted for kenyan muslim obama who was wary of "guns and religion" instead of white, pro-2nd-amendment john mccain, and white, pro-2nd-amendment mittens?

people vote their perceived self-interest. that perceived self-interest may include some measure of racialism but i'm not buying that it's the end-all-be-all of the self-interest calculus. guns may be a part of it too. but i believe economics is the biggest one.

i remember a story about a 2nd amendment (female) voter somewhere around those parts, in 2008, could have been PA or maybe OH, who was told by her sister to vote for obama because with 4 more republican years she wouldn't have any money to buy guns anyway.
