All in all, this is probably Beck's best album. It has the most eclectic mix of genre fragments he's ever put on one record, ranging from noise rock ('Pink Noise') to full blown country ('Rowboat'), and all the other crazy shit ('Aphid Manure Heist').

With a total of 23 tracks (on Flipside pressings it's more), including live tunes, you can't really afford to miss out on this album. I got it for $5 at Wal Mart when I was on vacation and I listened to it for a solid two weeks of road-tripping.

You'll love it, I swear.

Driving Thru Rural Georgia

"Today Has Been A Fucked Up Day"
has to be one of Becks' best recordings to date. Seems like tomorrow is the same old thing, indeed.

"Satan Gave Me a Taco" very high caliber too.

I remember buying this after Gellow Mold came out and was completley blown away.

Beck, you were my 14 yr old summer.

Does anyone else get immediately put off of things when the word 'eclectic' is used to describe them? As it happens, I quite like Beck, but the e word worries me a lot...

Its all how its used. If an event is eclectic then its diverse in style. If a band or man is eclectic is might mean they have no defined style which is not neccesarily good or bad or even it might mean the one using that word is limited with their vocabulary or might not want to write about each style individually so they chalk up the word eclectic and let that explain all.
SSM is rather wild in style. Country, old time banjo, spoken word, noise freakout, ballad, story song. I dunno eclectic might fit here, fit like a glove....

"Eclectic" is a cop-out buzzword for people who can't be bothered to write or read in-depth about a release encompassing a variety of stylistic influences. It bugs me too.

It's a good album. Really crazy sometimes, I wouldn't say it beats mellow gold. ANd I haven't heard one foot in the grave which is supposed to be really really good.

ZING! It's problematic for me because you don't ever get eclectic - for me, putting together a series of influences, largely sourced in American pop and folk, isn't really that eclectic; when things are genuinely eclectic, it become incredibly boring. What is interesting to me is the successful deployment of disparate elements in one sound: NNCK, for instance, take a couple of fairly disparate elements and merge them in one sound - it's not 'eclectic', but it is 'innovative', and rarely is anything 'original'.

Ozzy......Ozzy......Ozzy......Ozzy

It's not my favorite (One Foot in the Grave is), but yes it is some of the Beck action out there. Similar to silverfreepress, this was a soundtrack to my 8th grade year. The Spirit Moves Me, Crystal Clear Beer, Puttin It Down, are all excellent! Here is a link to some guys animation he made to Satan Gave Me A Taco that I posted in the youtube thread.......

what does it mean? the fire is green. the demons just came from the window!

very hodge-podge record. a first time listener doesn't really know what to expect from track to track. someone who's a fan of "odelay" or "sea change" won't immediatley like this album. but yeah, it's really somthing.

speaking of beck, you all should watch this really cool 'mellow gold' documentary. it speaks alot about beck's early gigs and stuff. a must see for any beck fan. you can watch the video here http://www.stewoo.net/beck/media/video/

That documentary is great. It has a sample from the original 'Cut 1/2 Blues' which is awesome. "Some folks get their kicks steppin' on ants / some folks fall for love and romance / some like to roll in the mud and laugh / my baby just likes to cut people in half".

And no, I'm not retarded. 'Eclectic' is a valid word.

yeah, it's my 2nd favorite beck album. Right after One foot in the grave. Beck is like Coltrane, his early stuff is the best. Or like Tom Cruise, his best shit was before he joined Scientology.

But I have to agree, it's shows the range of beck's talent more than any other of his cds.

(I was walking by the embankment, going through rural georgia, and there was a dead wildcat, and a bottle of... beer)

The Scientology dig was so mean. I love you. OFITG is a good album, but I don't like it more than SSM. Calvin Johnson's vocals on 'Atmospheric Conditions' are the best ever. Bassplosion, baby.

hey, i have a question about one foot... is it still in production? I haven't seen a copy at my record store in like a year (except for the insaneyl expensive japanese import one). There used to be a good few there always, but not lately.
